Mine is getting worse as the weather warms up. I took a video and will have it handy when I go back to the dealer for cracked window surround and squealing brakes. We are gluttons for punishment buying these first model year trucks.

Hello Whiskey_tango,

Keep us updated on your dealer visit. If you'd like to get a case started before your appointment, don't hesitate to send us a direct message.

Interesting. My truck did this last week coming home from Home Depot. I was in a slight left turn at 50 MPH and the wheel felt like it was stuck there. It took a little force to get it back and I was able to duplicate it. It almost feels like a flat tire on the front end; but it wasn't. I have 8,000 miles on the truck now. This is pretty concerning to me even though it has only occurred one time. With my luck; it won't happen again until after 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Recommend you bring it in to service, report the sticking steering, and mention the TSB referenced previously on this forum. If they don’t move forward with the repair elevate the problem through a @RamCares case. This method worked for me, new steering column under warranty and no repeats of the behavior. Good luck, be careful.

The date ranges are wrong. The issue is real. My 7-26-18 build date is outside the range in the current FCA document, but this issue is happening to my truck 100%. If FCA changes the dates in the document, I will bring the truck in to have the steering replaced, but I don’t have time for multiple dealer visits to document the issue for FCA.

While not a big deal on a day to day basis, this issue sent me into a skid through a left curve in a surprise hailstorm on CA 58 outside of California city on 2/21/19. I slid from the left lane into the right lane and managed to slot right between two semi’s as the wheels hooked back up. Scary as hell.

You should bring it in even if outside the range. This is a safety issue.

Hi blownout1500,
We're truly sorry to hear about the experience you had. We understand how concerning this may be and we will notify the appropriate party but we highly recommend notifying your dealer of this in order to have this properly documented and inspected by your dealer. If you do decide to go this route, please send us a private message as well and we'll assist with that process.

Yes, you have to push, finally got FCA to replace the front rack under warranty.

Happened to me too. It was driving me nuts. It seemed like an intermittent alignment problem and that doesn’t exist. After the second trip to the dealer I found this thread and that explained it. Filed a case with Ramcares before the third visit. Service tech couldn’t duplicate but I showed them this thread. They kept it a day, confirmed the problem, and ordered a new rack. I Never mentioned the Ramcares case but maybe they were involved. I hope to have it back in a day or two. I don’t know if Ram is realizing there is a larger problem, my dealership is just good, Ramcares, or all the above. Whatever I am very relieved at this point. I guess I have to take my name of the trouble free trucks thread but I still feel that for a brand new design truck, my problems have been much less than expected.

I will say that temperature, speed, angle of turn, and the alignment of the planets seem to affect if it happens. But there were certain points on my commute where it happens all the time. Like any steering problem the faster you are going the more obvious it is. I have a 70mph curvy road on my commute. The scary part is that it would go out so bad that lane correction could not correct it. It would just drift into the left lane. So I had to turn that off because it became unreliable. On my first visit they fixed the alignment so that had made things worse. Just be polite and keep at it.

After second visit, dealer still can't replicate. Just reached out to Ram Cares. Should I also contact NTSB?

I had this happen once and it felt like the Electric motor for the steering forgot where the center straight ahead direction is. It only did it on one trip for about 100 miles and then it went away and hasn't come back since.

I’ve had this issue occurring with my new ram since I bought it. It now has 8k miles on it and has been to the dealership twice, and both times with no explanations for the cause behind it. I was given the whole speech about it being a ground issue, so they replaced the main chassis ground and said it was fixed. I travel and awful lot and I can say that nothing was alleviated by their “fix”. So I opened up a case with Ram Care. My truck will be going to an entirely different dealership this coming Tuesday to get the adjustable pedal recall done, and hopefully the steering issue figured out. I made them aware as I was scheduling the appointment that Ram Care was already notified and will be taking part in the repair to make sure it’s addressed correctly.

I’ll keep everyone updated as to what happens after the visit. I wouldn’t doubt that they’ll blame my wheel width for the issue at this point, even though it’s happened since day one.

I don’t know if this will help anyone but it turned out that my issue was a bad gear in the rack not a bad seal as some others have explained. Same basic symptom with the never ending left turn. I still have to go back for the fourth time cause my dealership couldnt do a proper alignment after replacing the rack. But an alignment should be easy. I am hoping that is all it is. But now all the problems are right not left and they happen all the time. Seems like alignment. That’s what I am going to keep telling myself and stay positive.

My 2019 Ram 1500 4x4 crew cab bighorn, built 07/18 had the same problem of the steering sticking on shallow left turns.
It took 2 visits to the dealer to get the problem fixed which was a new steering rack.
I took 3 videos of the problem which helped me with the dealer and I showed the service guy a couple post from this forum.
Thank you all for your post and information.
I tried to upload the videos but I get a message the uploaded file does not have an allowed extension

Hi Beastram,
We certainly understand why this may be concerning. We recommend having your dealer look into this. Also, you're welcome to Canadian Customer Care to have this documented. You may find their contact information by clicking on the following link and scrolling down to the "Canada" tab: https://www.fcagroup.com/en-US/footer/Pages/contacts.aspx.

I had same problem with my steering while turning left it would stick and to bring it back to the right the only way to explain the feeling is like breaking a bolt free from being stuck. I could let go of steering wheel and it would stay going left and it was something in the steering rack they replaced the steering rack and is fine now. Had to call ram to speed up process though.
Email ram cares and they will open a ticket. I’m in the process right now. It has been escalated and they are now contacting the dealer to instruct them on what to do. The more people who document with ram cares the easier it will be for others in the future. Ram may even do a recall if it’s bad enough.

What’s is the ram cares email you used? Thanks

You have to get a case number and document what’s going on. I submitted a video of the steering issue while driving that was undeniable. It will take exhausting all options first but it will get done. Work with FCA and keep on them. This is a real serious problem with these trucks so I wasn’t giving up for anything!

You don’t email them per se. you send them a private message from this forum. Type The @ symbol followed by RamCares as the user you are sending the PM to. They will respond with an information request and you are off and running. That’s what I did and they got involved in my case.
