Steering no return to center (left turns)

This has been happening to me off and on for several months. It especially happens in shallow turns and is more noticeable at highway speeds. It is alarming to have to pull the steering wheel back to center. I took my 2019 Laramie to my dealer and was told they couldn't replicate the problem and there was nothing they could do. I had it happen again today going up a winding road and it appears to be getting worse. It seems to me that this is a safety issue. I'm getting an exhaust installed next week at my dealer and I will try again to get them to address this problem. I'm a new member to this Forum and I am glad that I found this thread. Hopefully, with so many others experiencing this same issue my dealer will act.

As others have said, involve ramcares. My dealer could not duplicate the issue either until they got involved. Perhaps coincidence perhaps not.

One more part of my experience. After they finally replaced the rack they couldn’t get the steering wheel straight. Apparently there is some computer reset thing they need to do and then it takes several days to straighten. Even with the lane correction turned off. I can’t imagine what is going on that it takes time for a steering wheel to straighten but it eventually did get fixed and straight. Four dealer trips and many hours later but it is fixed. Perseverance is the word of the day with this problem.

Lydia,
My truck is doing the same thing since the day I took delivery. I have it serviced yesterday for the 3 recalls including steering and it may no difference as on my way home from work the steering was stuck taking a sweeping left and I had to break it free to correct it. It can be quite scary and catch you off guard. I would let my sons or father borrow the truck because of it.
My servicing dealer is Elmwood Dodge in East Providence, Rhode Island

for a reminder, if you have a 8/18 build date this tsb below should be able to get everything resolved. once i gave it to my service advisor they ordered the new steering rack that day.

My build date is 4/18 and I'm not really sure what significance that will be. I will be going to the dealer next week to have an exhaust installed and have them check the steering again. RamCares responded to my PM and included some case numbers but I'm not really sure if I'm supposed to mention those to my dealer? RamCares did state that in order to get it fixed the dealer will have to replicate the problem. I did ask RamCares what other steps to take but I haven't heard back from them yet.

I was able to respond to your PM a few minutes ago, Gallatin. You are more than welcome to present those STAR cases to your dealer as well as TSB 19-002-18. This will help your dealer determine the best repair procedure for your truck.

I'm having the same issue with mine. I am waiting on the dealership to get a loaner for me so they will check it out. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get them to fix it with out all the Hassel of bringing it back multiple times.

I took mine in to another dealership. This time with video in hand. I'm going to post the exact writeup I received back, but the gist of it is:

Yes, we repro'd the issue.
We also took out a similar stock truck from our lot, and verified the issue on THAT truck as well.
Based on that finding, we've determined that this is expected behavior.
Your truck has aftermarket wheels and tires, which exacerbates the issue --> (not sure how they made that logical leap, but there it is)
Have a nice day.

Unfortunately no luck at the dealer yesterday! They say until they can duplicate the problem there is nothing they can do. They took my truck for about a 20 minute drive around the area and the Tech could not detect any problems. I pressed them a little on this and they said that they believe that I 'm have a problem but still need to duplicate it. I suggested that they have a Tech ride with me so that I can show them specifically what is happening and they agreed. So next week I will be going to the dealership and having someone ride along. Moral of the story: unless you are lucky it's going to take multiple visits to the dealer and it is probably going to be hit or miss whether its gets fixed. I will keep trying but until this becomes a recall or a tech alert of some sort resolution of the problem will be mixed.

Hi all,

Been following along with all this, as my truck has this exact issue in a big way. I DM’d ramcares on this forum and was assigned a case manager. I sent my explanation of the issue, the TSB #, as well as a crystal clear video of the wheel sticking in place through a left curve (hands off wheel, still locked in place).

My case manager just emailed with the following:

Hello,
We found two engineering cases that refer to your issue . I have called the dealer and left a message to return my call . Here are the reference #

S1823000030
S1808000162

Does anyone know what these engineering cases are?

Thanks!

I have this same problem. Bought the truck June 3. Ram1500 5.7 4x4. Build date 7/18. Has 2000 miles on it.. started noticing on the highway at speeds over 40 mph at around 1800 miles. Steering slight left does not return to center. Scary as hell. Going to call the dealer tomorrow.

Thx Lydia! My dealer had one of the service techs drive my truck home last night and back to the dealer this AM. This was a long enough route for the issue to become evident, so new replacement steering rack is being ordered. Thanks for your help - the process is working so far (y)

My steering rack was finally replaced with Ram Cares’ assistance. I’ve driven it everywhere locally that the steering would lock in place and no issues. The rack seems to have fixed it. Thanks Lydia!!

Now if they could just fix the 12” Uconnect software...

1,000 miles in on my new rack and I can say it’s officially fixed. I still catch myself bracing to wrestle the wheel heading into a left curve, but now it’s a nice surprise to not feel it stick anymore LOL.

Nobody makes up **** like this. There’s no big payoff for customers in getting their steering rack replaced, and It’s a major pain in the *** to document and make the trips to the dealer to get it to happen. I’m lucky enough to have a super helpful, diligent service department at my local dealer. It kills me that there’s folks out there who can’t get it fixed or just don’t have the time to fight an unhelpful service department.

FCA needs to start expanding the date range to include build dates for trucks that have clearly exhibited the faulty rack and had the issue solved by replacing it.
