Loud Rumbling/Revving Noise

Curious if the problem is with both the. Alpine and HK radios

I’ve got the basic 6 speaker system and it happened to me this morning for the first time. 4500 miles. Loud vibrating drone on first start of the day.... louder with throttle and feel like coming through speakers. Turned engine off and sat for 10 seconds. Was gone on restart. Hopefully a one off but I’m pretty confident it’s the ANC.

You can depin the ANC at the harness on the amp. I have a write up on it over at ramforums. It corrected the problem and all systems still work. I can make a thread on it here if others are interested.
Can you post or send the wiring diagram.

Hi,

New to the forum, I have a 2019 Ram that's a week old with 100 miles. Last night I turned the car on and as I put it into drive, there was a terrible loud, low pitched rumbling noise in the truck. I'm talking ear-piercingly loud. At first I thought it was engine related but as I tried to diagnose it sounded like it was coming from the car speakers. Is this an active noise cancellation malfunction? It was almost like it was taking engine noise and amplifying it throughout the entire truck. Turned it on this morning and had no issues. I called the dealer and they suggested I record or call them the next time I hear it.

Anyone heard of this before? It was so loud I literally had ringing in my ears last night and this morning.

Hi, new to the forum myself. I am dealing with the same issues right now. My truck is a 2019 Big Horne, with just 1800 miles on it.

Initially, I had an issue with the backup camera going “dark” on me when I hit 480 miles. Ignored it simply because, it came back after about 5 restarts. (There’s a TSB on it already)

Now, I am dealing with this “booming noise” when I start the car. Sounds like a bad alternator or, water pump bearing going out. Happens between 1200-2500 rpm, gets louder as the RPM drops.

Can be reproduced while in Neurtal, revving the engine. However, it will not make any noise when the Hood is open. Or, when you crack the window open. Almost sounds like some harmonic vibrations going on. (?) Could it be the active noise cancelling system going out? Gonna take it in to the dealer and have them take a look at both issues. (BU camera and the ANC)
Definitely NOT, what I was expecting to deal with just 5 weeks into owning this truck.

I have been having a similar problem since new. A Low drone noise. Lower RPM 1500-1800. The noise is very similar to driving a standard car and being in the wrong gear and the motor working too hard at a low rpm. Being patient hoping it would go away. Noise does not change with open or closing the windows. Does not change with different radio settings. Very annoying as it is mostly in town lower speeds.

This is similar to what I've had since new (now 700 miles). When I first heard it I thought it was a low flying airplane or something near me. I didn't think much of it until the next time when I had people in the backseat and it became unbearable for them. Since then it's been the intermittent low drone noise but I again had someone in the backseat last night and it got significantly worse. I think it all has to be related to the ANR stuff. Given that it doesn't appear that Chrysler has a fix yet besides cutting the mic wires, I'm ready to do the unhook procedure described by KRField above. How many have tried this and does it indeed take care of all the weirdness? If the trade-offs are some engine/tire noise that I'm used to hearing in every other vehicle that's fine with me.

I have heard this sound in my truck also.
It happen about four times when I first got the truck. I have not heard it come back in the last month, it seems to have corrected it’s self. I’m at 3800miles in my truck.

Purchased 2019 RAM 1500 on Sept 16, 2018. Noticed loud humming noise within 1st week. Took truck back to dealer Oct 1, 1018. They could not replicate noise. Found out later it was only making noise when 2 or more people in back seat. Took back to dealer on Oct 6, 2018 and they heard noise when people in back seat. No clue as to what was causing it. Star case was opened with FCA and advised to put in "New" noise cancelling module (amplifier) which was done, but did not correct problem. Was told FCA would have a software update to amplifier. But no idea as to when. Short term fix was to crack window 1" which disables noise cancellation module until window is closed . Was told if the module was totally disconnected, radio would not work. Hope this helps.

Same issue in my truck also. Have around 10k miles on it and only hear the noise when I have people in the backseat or cargo in the bed. Hoping FCA can find a fix to this ASAP.

I have a 2019 Bighorn hemi w/o etorque and have had a similar issue for the last few thousand miles. I now have 5800 miles on the truck and it has been to the dealer twice for a week at a time. They have been unable to duplicate the issue because it is intermittent. It sounds like a loud exhaust drone between 1500 and 1800rpms, but it goes away after i get above 2000 rpms. I tried to record the noise but I was too high of a pitch to capture on my phone. I am not sure what’s causing it or what to do about it. Sometimes the truck drives perfect and others it makes the noise. Let me know if your dealer is able to correct the issue.
my does the exact same thing and this is only when the eco light is on! have been able to fix that??

thanks in advance

Okay, this is different and yes, I too am experiencing THIS issue as well.

Just a quick update: I took my truck back to the dealer and, they upgraded the firmware of the infotainment system. The dealer was aware of the “booming sound” caused by the noise cancelling system so, this issue is or, should be fixed now.

Here is my “booming sound version 2.0” I just identified. This, I am almost able to reproduce on demand, and make it go away on demand as well.

Here’s how it happens:

- gotta be in higher gear, 5th-6th -7th
- gotta be coasting meaning: off throttle
- RPM between 1250 to 1500
This can be repro’d best on long downhills where, you are OFF throttle. Can’t touch the brake pedal b/c that will cause the tranny to downshift, raising the RPM above 1500

The sound comes from the back of the truck. It sounds like Robert Trujillo on the Bass, in overdrive lol! It causes this vibration in the cab, you can feel it through the door panels, the floor and, even the steering wheel.

Once you are able to produce this, you can make it go away by getting the RPM to go over 1500 (or, drop below 1250)
If you press “Tow Mode”, this will disable Cylinder Deactivation, will make the sound go away. If you shift into N while rolling, will also make the sound go away.
In my opinion, this has to do with Cylinder deactivation kicking into 4cyl mode on coast, causing some funky frequencies that will vibrate the exhaust system just right, making this booming sound.

Currently, perfecting the repro, so that I can demo it to the technicians and see if, they are able to do something about it.

Wow l! this is a perfect discription of what’s going on with my truck as well.. you know what I think I believe it is the cheap speakers trying to compensate the cilinder deactivation and the frequency makes the speakers react I bet you, you have the 6 speaker set up.

Do me a favor watch this video through Bluetooth in your truck then raise up the volume and it will be the same sound.

Please let me know as soon as you find out.

I think it is kinda uncool for us to figure it out first than @RamCares :/

Wow! spot on, man! Just played it through CarPlay and it sounds exactly what I am hearing. So the question is, does the get generated “artificially” through the speakers or, more like a frequency of the exhaust/Cylinder deactivation (4cyl mode)?

Yup! Exactly the same noise! I think it comes from the speakers artificially. Now with that said, I don’t know how to find a solution for that :/

Hi, this may sound crazy, but one of you said that it doesn't make the noise if the hood is up. A while back FCA had a problem with the hood in which their fix was to glue the hood to the support struts. See TSB- 23-029-18. They apparently fixed future hoods after a certain date, but maybe they didn't. A shot in the dark, but you may want to have it checked out, if you run out of other leads.

Hi eduardolalo11 and Rambruiser,

I understand your frustrations with this - as we do not have access to a vehicle to look into these symptoms personally, we rely on our dealers for in-person diagnosis, and we can also check any documented service actions (such as TSBs and STAR cases) for related symptoms. If you haven'd had the following TSB applied regarding the amplifier, I would recommend having your dealer look into it as the symptoms seem similar to what you're describing:

NUMBER: 08-088-18
GROUP: 08 Electrical

SUBJECT: Drone or Booming Noise from Audio System

OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves inspecting and replacing the amplifier if needed.

MODELS: 2019 (DT) RAM 1500 Pickup
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries: NAFTA, EMEA and LATAM.
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or after April 16, 2018 (MDH 0416XX) on or before April 27, 2018 (MDH 0427XX) equipped with Active Noise Control System (Sales Code JLW) and 6 Speakers (Sales Code RCG).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION: The customer may describe hearing a drone or booming noise coming from the audio system.
NOTE: If the windows are rolled down, the Active Noise Control (ANC) system is turned off.
This noise can be heard if the engine RPM is between 1200 and 2100. The ANC module is in the Amplifier.

If you have further questions, please PM us any time.

Thanks for your response, Jennifer!

I took my vehicle back to the shop and, they applied the following TSB:

“Reprogrammed ANC from 68312240AE to 68312240AG per TSB 08-140-18”

This, didn’t help with the booming sound however, made it much more easy to reproduce consistently.
In addition, I have also noticed that, when I play music through CarPlay, the volume will fluctuate as I drive. For example, the volume will drop and I come to under 5mph and, will go back up as I accelerate above 7-8mph.
I wonder if, this also has to do with the Amp.

I am waiting for a new rear camera install by the shop (it’s on order) Will ask the shop manager about the TSB you listed earlier (TSB 08-088-18)
Ultimately, it sounds like the amp will have to be replaced...(?)
Thanks again for being active and helpful on this discussion forum! - Joe

I have this same issue . My build date dec 2018. Took it to the dealer and they said they found a star case to replace the ANC and avc. I'm now sure what 'avc' is.

Very curious to know if that fixed it and if so do you happen to know what bulletin they were went by? My build date is Nov 2018 and everything I've seen thus far has applied to trucks built before that date.

I'm waiting for the dealer to determine when I can come in. They have to order parts. The tech just mention there is a star case about ANC and avc
