Front end clunk while turning - FIXED - TSB # 23-047-18

@19RamLimited so you can see how close the end of the bolt is to the floor. But they changed out 2x screw- hex flange head lock, 2x isolator- body hold down and 2x absorbers. That’s the verbiage right off the service ticket.

Open a STAR case! I am telling you bro this will get engineers involved and speed up the resolution if there is even one and if not they have to document that. You do Not need to leave your car with them while the STAR case is getting investigated.

Techs are reluctant to open a STAR case because of the time they get tied up with engineering and they generally aren't paid for.

You are correct that the vehicle doesn't need to there, but in the STAR case screen it asks if the vehicle is present.

Don't want to start any witch hunts as what I'm about to say is hearsay at this point. Take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, but:

We have received some intel that FCA is aware of this and is currently working on a fix. They are freezing all cases opened with those having the clunking. From what I understand, they are investigating a potential issue with the lower ball joints. I'm told they were a new design and it's possible that they need to be reengineered, or a bad batch of them made their way to the assembly line. I'm hopeful that if they can confirm this is the problem, a TSB will soon follow. You guys will know as soon as I know anything further.

FWIW, I had an '03 Dakota that had the exact same symptoms you folks are experiencing and it turned out to be a bad lower ball joint.

Best regards,
Dusty

I have the same issue... brand new truck..literally ordered it and it just came in.. clunk at low speed.. heard it pulling out of my driveway to many times for a week old...

Same here.. day I brought it home. Pathetic for a new vehicle... should be a recall... these are NOT 25k piles of sh*t.. Although I'm starting to wonder.. no issues with my 2011,12,13,14,15,or 17 1500s... this one cost more and has issues right out of the gate.. this is how you Lose Customers....that dont come back

I haven't heard my clunk in over 3 weeks now. No repair or anything done. Just stopped. Should I be worried?

Glad to hear I’m not thinking or feeing things. Have about 700 miles and have had a club I when turning

I have an August build and noticed a small tap/pop noise once in a while under my left foot. I'm guessing this is "the clunk". Frankly, i don't think I would have noticed it if I hadn't read so much about it on this thread before purchasing.

I agree it's something that needs to be fixed, but it's a far cry from a 'recall' issue, or referring to the truck as a pile of sh*t. I figure I'll mention it when I'm in for my first service appointment. By then something will likely be out for it that is 'official'. If not, I'll wait until the next service appointment. This just isn't that big a deal......

Seems like we are not all having the same clunk so what might work for one truck may not work for another.

I honestly believe they are all the same. thats why I am trying to figure the common denominator

Wonder if you get the noise without turning? Because I do
I have only heard the clunk when turning right over a small to medium sized valley st an intersection, but I think it depends on the severity of your problem. Many have reported hearing it while turning either direction. My issue has doesn’t occur that frequently.

It's a brand new truck. It should have zero issues- it's that simple. No one spending $$ should have issues from the onset. Not to mention until someone nails the problem- we have no idea what kind of damage is being done under the trunk.... My truck was built Sept. So apparently what RAM knows is an issue is still not being addressed at production. Truck market is super competitive as we all know. It's in FCAs best interest to find the clunk and make it right-pronto...

I think you'll also note in my comment in all caps... these are NOT a pile of ****. Funny how instead of realizing theres an issue some find it more important to defend what's clearly an issue for MANY....Not to mention, it appears as though the clunk varies in severity, therefore what's tolerable to some, may not be to others

Very easy to say not having your brand new truck doing it. We will see your thoughts after your new expensive truck arrives making the noise.. mine was no small unnoticeable tap. I always have music on loud and I heard over that and felt it.

You can say what you want when not in someone’s shoes

I’m driving it now. I hear a small pop once in a while. I’ll get it fixed once a fix is in place.

Can you post or PM me the part numbers? Thanks for the pictures

@19RamLimited Did you reapply red lock tite upon reinstall of bolts?

My 19 limited has been doing it since 200 miles, now 1100. It seems to be more pronounced in the rain.

Some of you guys need to chill. I know it is very frustrating to spend a lot of money on a new vehicle and have a minor defect/issue with it. I have bought so many new cars in the past decade that I would say 80% of them had issues from the start which were much worse than this. My 2017 Volvo XC90 had all four air suspension replaced after 200 miles, my 2015 VW GTI had its transmission replaced after 500 miles, my 2014 Ram 1500 had a transmission jerk that lasted till I sold 3 years down the road, this is just to name a few of my issue with new vehicles from all brands.

I have been suffering with the knock since I bought it and its been 2k miles now. My recent backyard fix has worked and I am clunk free but even when I had it I wasn't worried more annoyed when I heard it.

This thread went from helpful to users straight complaining and pumping up their internet muscles. Let's continue to help the 5th gen community in finding fixes that will help all those still currently with the clunking noise.
