I run a similar setup. I wanted to be able to keep groceries in the bed without them sliding around on the trip home. I put some camping gear in the bins a few weekends ago, but without the bed cover or bar because I was also hauling my dirtbike. Also a great place to hide Christmas gifts!
What's the drain interval? How many miles did you have?
I did it once on my Dodge Dakota, but the fill port was very difficult to access and pour into. So I never did it again. But...I had the have that differential rebuilt 6 times, so it got fresh fluid often enough.
Why on earth would you be beholden to honor your uncle's offer? Why not a simple, no fella that's not the deal sorry he misunderstood? Do you do everything your uncle says you will? It's a little weird, honestly.

We are driving some of the least fuel efficient vehicles available to citizens (non-commercial), eco-diesels excluded.
So, the way we feel about our trucks is...
Very good point! So...the comparative payback is quicker.
As far as whether or not 15 mpg is a good estimate for the 5.7L... it's about what I'm getting. And DON'T rely on the value in the instrument panel. That number is VERY optimistic. You have to calculate gallons pumped in and miles...
Did a quick calculation.
12,000 miles per year
15mpg in a 5.7L vs 30mpg in the ecoDiesel
$4.25 for gas, $4.75 for diesel
Diesel would save you $1,500 a year, if prices held steady.
The engine's MSRP is $4,995.
3.3 years to recover the additional cost.
Of course if you already had the diesel...
