ROUGH starts on cold starts?

Been near and below freezing all week and haven't had any problems with rough starts. Guess the ECM update and some 89 octane did the trick.

Hello All,

Sorry for not updating this sooner but better late than never.
They replaced my oil filter, then the air intake sensor, then finally two injectors which finally remedied the issue on my truck.
No issues since then.

FYI: Mine did not have the issue in cold temps as I believe the cold temps trigger the computer idle the engine at a higher rate negating the chance for the truck to idle rough. In mild temps was when I was experiencing the issue.

Hello,

Just read through this thread and I am having very similar issues.

To start, I live in Northwest IN. Bought the truck 3/2/19. First oil change at 3500mi with 5W-20 PUP and a WIX synthetic oil filter (PITA by the way). Truck has just under 5000mi on it now. Never had the cold start issue before the oil change. Yes, I have checked oil level multiple times. Always run either 89 or 93 octane from the same gas station, so bad gas is not a worry.

The starting issue has happened to me on 3 occasions to date. The truck is parked on a decline, with the nose raked down. No crazy incline, just slightly. There is no obvious correlation to the weather as it has happened at 25*F, 52*F, and 61*F at the time of start.

I will hop in, hit the start button (no ignition cycling as I continue to forget to try), and the truck will attempt to start. Very slow idle, almost sounds like an old carbureted V8, for about 5 seconds until it gives up and dies. I immediately restart the engine and it fires and runs with no problem. I have not experienced any of the odd noises or tach bouncing around (knock on wood).

I do not trust dealerships around me, so I am trying to put together a pattern on my own. After reading through the posts, I happen to think my issue may be related to the oil filter, maybe ill go with a Mobil1 on the next change. Another thought, I have added an electronic exhaust dump to the truck in the last couple of months. Ill ride around with it open, but close it off when the truck is parked (as it sounds wayyy too loud and awesome to start up at 5AM). Could the computer be adjusting for the loss of back pressure and not have time to readjust to the "closed" setting before shutting off?

Too many variables on these new engines to nail down.

There is a TSB that takes care of the rough cold start issue.

Hello everyone. New to the forum and I’m having the same issue with cold starts a lot of your are taking about. 2019 5.7 Bighorn. Pretty much exact symptoms. Anyone have any updates on how you resolved it or maybe have the link to the TSB that address this specific problem?
Thank you.

I'm not having the issue of a hard start in what folks are talking about here. However, in the cold starts, I hit the start button and you hear and feel a jolt and then it starts. The sound is a very loud clunk but it's fine thereafter. Anyone have the same?

Mine required the replacement of 2 injectors to remedy the rough start issue

Yes I've had the clank or clunk sound intermittently on startups since new. Dealer couldn't replicate (surprise) but I think it might be a starter issue? Maybe @RamCacould look into this issue as well.

actually, the ticking sounds, like a lifter, was a warped exhaust manifold, and broken exhaust bolt... had it fixed for free when when cold, it let the pressure out, sounded just like a lifter... when warm, it went away... (was done on my 2012)

Since replacing the injectors the problem has been fixed? No issues since?
I still have the clunk like everyone else but the rough/dying when trying to start is gone.

the throttle bodies shudder to de-ice on startup...
My pickup didn't experience the rough starts in the cold, quite the opposite. It would idle roughly and nearly die repeatedly on warm weather starts and start and idle at a higher RPM and be fine in cold weather.

Hi people. I'm new to the forum, not new to rams. I've read through this thread and can't find my issue. I also fear the dealer will have trouble duplicating as weather is getting warmer.

I just bought a 2019 3.6l v-6 , Ram 1500, North Edition on May 8th(3 weeks ago). My first V-6 Ram, my other three were 5.7's. I miss the sound.

About every third day that I leave for work at 6:30am, as I accelerate from my driveway down the main road (50mph) I live on, somewhere around third gear the truck shutters quite violently. Reminds me of jerk from when old cars clunk to a stall or to stay running. It only shutters 2-4 times in a row and is good the rest of the drive. It has never done it when I'm leaving work after sitting all day. That leads me to think it has to do with temperature. The clunking/ shuttering could be engine or trans, it is hard for me to tell which.

I have an appointment with the dealership on Monday at 10 a.m.

Any advise you have that I can give them would be helpful. As I stated, it's getting warmer here and I fear they may have trouble replicating.
