Rear window surround crack.

Does anyone know if FCA changed the rear window part in the 2021 or will this be a continuing problem? Also I thought FCA changed the gasket for the third light, is that correct?
No and no. Same window and same garbage brake light seal.

My 2019 now has the frame crack on the drivers side of the sliding window. Leaking also.

I remove the third brake light and looked down at the window frame from the top as you said. Not only was it cracked on the drivers side but a crack was forming on the passenger side as well. The passenger side crack has not spread to the inside of the truck yet.

I had a tube of black Dicor self leveling lap sealant used to seal RV roofs. Really good stuff, it flows and remains flexible. I cut the tip so that I got the smallest bead possible. Filled the area between the window glass and the truck body, the full length of the area below the 3rd brake light. The self leveling sealant flowed perfectly into the gap. No mess or cleanup and you’d never know it’s there.

Replaced the 3rd brake light gasket while I was at it. Problem solved!
Glad it worked. Much better than risking damage during a window replacement and replacing the window with another fail prone unit. At least now it won’t leak and the crack will be solely cosmetic.

My question to to the people who had the the leaks !
Would you still buy a Ram 1500 if you would have known the frequent issues with the leaking window ?
I do understand that on this forums and others including other manufacturers people are going to posting issues with there vehicles!
And there is no guarantee with any vehicle that you are not going to have some issues!
But every time I look someone is complaining out this this same issue !
But it just seems like FCA has not come with a fix !
I really want a Ram 1500 as my next truck but this is scaring me off !!!

Just a note, and I mean this as a GM owner as well, be wary of the current Silverado / Sierras, their rear window water leaking issues actually appear to be even bigger.

Both RAM & GM are using the same rear window vendors, apparently some batches of windows are having issues with water leaks by either cracks in the frame, or not enough sealant applied. Then you have the other issue of 3rd brake light seals.

We don't know the true extent of how many are leaking out of the population, if it's a question of when instead of if. We also don't know if they actually have updated parts to prevent this after a repair.

The GM trucks I casually looked at and never really seriously consider them !
My first choice is still the Ram otherwise I would just get another F-150 !

The Silverado is the wifes :)

I actually came from a 2015 F150 which I loved, I avoided answering your question since I haven't had any issues with my truck (knocking on the whole tree).

But I will say I LOVE my Rebel, even more than my F150, which I also adored. I get bored every few years and want something different.

I will say, I would wait to see what the 2021 all-new F150 has against the face-lifted RAM possible next year. That's assuming FCA will face lift the RAM for the 2022 year, which is expected. Also, by then the current GM trucks will have heavily revised interiors, if that's the main reason you didn't consider them.

Had the cracked window frame, not too trilled about it but yes, would buy it again, the ride quality is out of this world.

How did you get the gasket off of the 3rd brake light? Seems like you would have to cut/scrape it off.

Patience and my fingers. Cut most of it off with a razor then just used my fingers to rub the rest off. Applied new gasket and reinstalled.

Welp only 9700 miles on my loaded sport laramie and just checked but looks like I am victim of cracked rear window framing... @RamCares whats the steps??

Well, it's raining today. I decided to go out and check my back window for leaks after discovering the dreaded crack the other day and sure enough, my window is leaking around the frame. I don't feel any wetness on the headliner so I think my third brake light is leaking. My build date is October 2019. When the hell are they going to fix this??? Why has there been no class action suit here. WTF FCA? FIX your $#!^. I had the back window in my 2016 replaced two times, now I have the SAME ISSUE WITH A 2020 RAM. This is wrong on so many levels. NOT HAPPY AT ALL ABOUT THIS!!! I LOVE my Ram but seriously, this needs to be resolved. Maybe try a different rear window manufacturer??

Ordered a Rebel a few weeks ago. First thing I am doing when I get it home will be removing 3rd brake light and sealing rear window and resealing the light. Currently driving a 2019 Silverado with the same issues. I just cant believe GM and FCA refuse to make changes to fix these things. Why not just do away with the sliding rear window and install a better gasket for brake light.

If its a 2021, it should have the revised LED brake light, interesting to see how that is setup with the seal. Both GM and RAM are using the same two vendors for the rear window frames, hopefully they come up with a fix. I've had my truck for 15 months, no crack yet, but it only has a little over 6,000 miles so still knocking on wood. Our Silverado hasn't had the leak yet, again still too low miles to know if it's a question of if vs. when.

Thanks Mark. I actually just got back from the dealership and they are usually pretty good so I'll reach out only if I see things aren't progressing. They took the pictures to send to FCA for the warranty approval. My service rep did let me know that there will most likely be a longer than normal wait time on parts due to the high demand. She also let me know that this is also affecting the Jeep Gladiator. Between the Ram and the Gladiator, my dealership alone has seen 5-6 replacements this month. I think the big issue here is with FCA. This has been ongoing since at least Gen4 that I know of (I had 2 replacements in my 2016 Rebel - and 1 third brake light to boot) and still, nothing has been done to correct the problem. In the Information Technology field, we call this root cause analysis (RCA) to determine what is causing a problem and take steps to properly resolve. A replacement rear window without root cause and resolution is nothing more than a bandaid. The problem WILL come back eventually, and I believe what FCA is hoping is that when the warranty is up so they can wash their hands. Really SAD.. :(

I had the rear window crack and had it replaced with the newer window model, so far so good. I then had the third brake light leak, which I fixed using the recommendations from this forum (auto and marine rubber weatherseal). 0 regrets, still love the truck and I'd get another one in a heartbeat. If you end up getting one, replace the third brake light seal right away, the stock seal soaks right through and will eventually leak regardless IMO.

Also, Ford and GM seem to have their own issues, some of which are transmission related.. give me an easy $5 seal fix and a window replacement any day by comparison.

Thanks for responding.. My dealer has me coming by tomorrow to take their own pictures and go from there. I will follow up once I meet with them. Appreciate the ram care!

I'll be getting this window replaced as well, dealer got the evidence, FCA approved and a matter of time to schedule the dreaded deal. Will be taking pics of everything beforehand to avoid any he said she said issues with scratches etc. The replacement is very invasive per prior posts, but just another job to the techs and window guy. Hope it goes well

As usual Merrick dodge took me in right away to see whats up.. Service manager said they only have had 1 other vehicle with this issue. Ordering parts and having a glass specialist handle everything outside of dropping interior and RAM specific parts. ALL will be covered. Unclear how long truck will be in shop for I will know when parts arrive and make appt to get it corrected/repaired.
Will follow up here again.. aside from this not happening you cant complain with the solution and attn to the issue.
