Power Steering Failure! Super Dangerous

New Owner here ‍♂️
2019 1500 Sport
Girlfriend and I were driving to a city nearby our town. On slight left turn over speeds of 50 mph, the power steering locks the wheel at 15-30 degree angle. At this time you can let go of the wheel and the truck will retain steering position. It does not require a lot of force to get it out of the “lock” position and the EPS goes right back to normal after. It was so seamless we initially thought it was some sort of lane assistance. Truck is at the dealer right now but they cannot replicate the situation

From what I have gathered talking to my service advisor, if the steering is locking up like you have explained, the fix is generally to just replace the rack and EPSM, for the full steering failure like @alacombe and I experienced, it was really an issue with the PCM. Good luck getting your truck fixed and keep us posted.

I have 200 miles on my new sport and had the same issues with the wheel sticking while turning to the left. Very concerning.

2019 Ram Laramie Sport with 800 miles. Steering stuck twice so far. Both on curves . 1st on left hand curve and 2nd time on right hand curve. I too thought it was some type of lane assistance. Just found this thread and not impressed. Looks like it has been a known problem for some time.

2019 1500 longhorn. Lease with 800 mi. Wife and I were going 70 down highway when it went out and got the message. She took a pic of the screen. Worried about it happening to her in the truck alone. When it came back on we diverted straight to the dealership however the service center was closed on Sunday. Looking to get in ASAP as it is the holidays.

Make sure to have them swap your PCM, there have been several cases where this was the fix, so it should be reasonably well documented with FCA engineersgo in with the aforementioned star case numbers to help plead your case. A new rack and power steering module did NOT fix mine or alacombes.

I have 2019 Laramie also, I’m having the same problem with the power steering not working, it stays off from anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. The dealer changed the pcm and I still have the same problem, does anybody have any suggestions?

Are you getting a message in the dash. Is the dealer getting fault codes related to the rack and pinion. Is your steering only locking when turning steering wheel about 90 degrees or so? If they are getting fault codes could you post them here.

I am getting a message in the dash that says power steering unavailable Service Required, the codes are for high voltage

Unfortunately that is not enough info. Could be wiring, could be rack itself, pcm, bcm. tech needs to pull event data. Should able to track down.

It has been checked for wiring and the pcm was changed also. They just recently changed the battery sensor and told me it was fixed. Unfortunately I never got out of the parking lot before the alarm went off 4 more times, it’s still at the dealer, they have had it for 2 weeks, I don’t know what else is next

Assuming they checked the wiring correctly, it probably needs a rack. But that is a huge assumption. If I knew the exact fault codes, I could be more help. Were there any can bus fault codes?

C2129-17 was the fault code , the dealer said it was a high voltage issue

The chances are it is a bad rack. The rack thinks the voltage is too high coming into the module for the rack. What needs to be eliminated is the ground at the frame rail and elsewhere. If the ground is loose or corroded you can generate a high voltage code due to high resistance. These guys should know this. The event data should show high voltage only seen by the rack. Assuming there are no other high voltage codes anywhere, it is isolated to the rack. So it is either a crappy ground or the rack itself. If you had high voltage hitting other modules, then you need to see why there is a voltage spike in the whole vehicle.
Is this an etorque or regular 5.7

Good. That takes the etorque system possibility out of the equation. This should not be that hard. Unless they already know it is the rack. Possibly back order? have they given you any updates?

Only 430 miles on my Laramie. Today while driving went to turn at an intersection and panicked when i started to turn the steering wheel left but kept going straight for about 1-2 seconds then the wheels started turning but felt no power steering as i continued the turn. Pulled over after the turn was completed and shut down the truck. Thankfully i was stopped at a light in the left turn lane before this. After I calmed down, restarted the truck and felt the power steering back but drove home and parked it. Did not happen again but after researching this i see I may have an issue. Tomorrow I am calling the dealer as I am not comfortable driving and i have a 850 mile trip coming up in 2 days. Guess I am driving my tried and true 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis up to Philadelphia for the New Years Parade.
