Power Steering Failure! Super Dangerous

Hello alacombe,
Please check your PM

Hello 202snowman & RT70808

Please send us a PM with you Vin, contact information best time to reach you. Also please please the question below:

1) How severe of a turn (provide speed during the occurrence) (is the steering wheel going to 9 or 3 like a clock face or 10 or 2 like a clock face)

2) Is there any form of braking involved? (tapping, riding etc while going into or coming out of the turn)

3) What size wheels ?

4) Type of Suspension: air or steel?

a. If air suspension what ride height are they at when this issue is prominent?

5) What size engine ?

@RamCares I responded to all these questions for you already. Please check your messages.

Scary stuff man. This feels like an eventual recall issue if they can pinpoint what is going on. Can't chance the serious ramifications that could occur. This is the first issue someone has had that legitimately makes me very nervous.

Very scary, steering fails out of no where and you have no idea when it will occur.

Dealership called and left a voicemail stating that they ordered a part for my truck which is on back order currently and my truck is labeled "Not Drive-able" which according to them expedites this part. They are giving me a loaner car and now my truck sits for who knows how long.....

Dealership ordered which is on backorder a new "EPSM." Can anyone tell me what this is and what this does? My truck also has stored "DTC's C2129-17" in EPSM. Any insight on any of this would be great.

This is for an older model and different computer circuit, but a code is a code so that's what it should mean. RBRK is right it's an electronic power steering module, so it's the go between for everything in that circuit. So according to code definition there's a voltage spike in the system, first culprit would be module since it is sending and recieving all the inputs and outputs for the system. Glad all is well, hope it's fixed, I will be watching this one closely

@DSOOBY did they replace your EPSM?
Yes they did, it that was done at the same time as the rack and pinion/steering gear.

As an update to others as well, they are now replacing my PCM and the tech is going to drive the truck for awhile to make sure the fix takes.

Hard to believe its an issue with EPSM, while the fault probably occurs in it due to too much voltage, that voltage is coming from elsewhere... Sounds most like a PCM issue to be honest.
I agree 100% but I guess we will see what happens. Im sure it will fail again just like @DSOOBY 's did. Who knows when I will even get the truck back due to the EPSM on back order.

Sorry its not straight but here is my document from the dealer.

Wow, this is not a good omen for the 2019 Ram 1500. I have gone from super excited when I first saw the new Ram, to cautious and concerned after reading the multitudes of problems, and now this thread. Too many problems and now a major safety item. I have resolved to get a gen 4 HD as my next truck.

Good luck all. I'm done with the Gen 5 fantasy.

Do I read that right almost 113 hours of labour
Lol that what is appears to me. I am prolly selling this truck. After this issue, my radio issue, and my LED compartment light issue all less then 3,000 miles is enough for me. Just came from my 2017 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel (Lemon Law Truck) to this. Screw it I had enough with Ram. Other people have some "clunk," wet floor boards, garbage AC performance this is just ridiculous. I feel bad for all these people on here just now buying the 2019 all super excited as I was. I am not the only one with this power steering issue there is like 3 on this forum and about 5 on another forum and it all appears to be happening between 2-9k miles.

Prolly a good idea

Wondering why they are failing, would have thought they were the same as previous generation and I have never heard of them failing. I have never had a problem with my 2014.

I guess I'm confused about electronic power steering (EPS).

I do have some experience with driving a vehicle with EPS as our 2017 Tahoe has it. Isn't it "assisted" just like on older power steering systems only using an electric motor vs a hydraulic pump?

I guess I'm asking what the difference is between an electronic system that looses the assist controls and a hydraulic system that looses a pump belt. Can you still steer the vehicle, or do you lose all steering control?

I was just thinking the same thing. I've driven plenty of non-powered steering vehicles with relative ease. Does the electronic steering on this cause total lock-up upon failure?
