Engine stalled / shut off

This happened to me 4 times in the last month. Turning at intersections, merging, entering highways. It's finally in for service. And my dealer tells me, "they have some literature for me" and the system is supposed to do that and it's operating as it should." It may shut down the motor before coming to a stop." The issue is, it shuts down the motor and doesn't turn it back on. Check engine light, service auto start stop appear until I cycle the truck.
Found a low emotor battery, and a "loose starter bolt"
When I complained that leaving me to be tboned in an intersection because my truck turned itself off and won't go move unless I turn it off and back on, seems like a extreme liability. They had no answer. @RamCares something has to be done, 2 intersections, 1 turning lane and 1 pulling into a highway.

Update: apparently this wasn't covered under powertrain warranty. What bs

Im having this issue as well. Long story short, but I bought a 2022 Ram Rebel with e torque in November 2021. I was having the stalling out issue and almost went through the full lemon law process before the dealership just swapped me vehicles.

From that point forward I have had minimal issues with the current 2022 ram rebel with etorque.

Until a week ago, I have had this occur 4-5 times. I searched recalls and found this..

Has anybody done this recall?

I have 19k miles and mine (V6) just stalled today, while feathering the gas pedal to slowly go straight up a driveway with little room. After it stalled it put itself in park and automatically applied the parking brake. I immediately re-started it without issue.

During today's commute while driving it seemed to have some minor lurching... like perhaps a fuel problem is starting. Gas mileage seems a bit down so maybe it's the e-torque. However the start-stop function was turned off.

I'll have to take it on some back roads and see if it's still doing that or if I can make it stall. It has an open recall for the tailgate that I keep putting off so maybe it's time to finally take it in.

Update. Happened again tonight. Remote started the truck. Got in 3 minutes later, drove about 500 yards, died in the middle of the intersection.
Truck turned back on after 30 seconds and the battery light came on. As I was driving, battery gauge was reading 11.6v, made it home after a 10 minute drive. Get home, turn the truck off and back on. Battery light it off, gauge is back to normal.

I'm certain this all comes down to a faulty etorque battery. My truck kicks off while still in motion when slowing down to a stop,. Which the dealer said was "normal".
Last time they said my battery was low and they charged it.
I'm getting pretty tired of a 80k truck dying in the middle of the road.

I looked up my vin, there's no outstanding recall for it.
The factory advances the VIN’s as customers come in and complain, loudly, often, and through Ramcares, and regional manager, and national manager of customer service.

I have posted on this thread many times.

This "shut-down" problem came ups back in January 2023. It resurfaced this week.

I have read many opinions on the root cause. In my case, I think it was caused by water intrusion in the connections for the RF Module behind the rear seat.

The problem resurfaced about 1 month ago.

I know if I bring to the dealership for a diagnosis, they will not find any error codes, as many of you have experienced.

I want to change the RF module as a precaution, but the total price at the dealership is close to $1500.

I am opening another case with RAM and sending the following note to RamCares.

Message to RamCares through the forum:

Hello RamCares,

I am reaching out about an issue with my 2020 1500 Limited.

This problem started in January. The engine would shut off and the truck would go into park.

I brought the truck in a dealership in Santa Cruz, California.

They could not find any error codes, but noticed the rear window leak that many of these truck have.

They summarized that the initial problem of the "shut-down" was caused by water intrusion on the RF module connectors.

I requested that the RF Module be replaced, but it was on back order.

The dealership replaced the rear window and kept the truck for 30 days to see if they could replicate the problem.

They were unable to replicate it. It took the vehicle back and I have been diligently tracking the issue on this forum and others to see if a root cause has been found. Nothing has come up so far.

The problem resurfaced about 1 month ago. I would like to change the RF Module. The dealership is quoting $290 for the part and $1127 for the labor to replace it.

I opened another case with Ram.

Case #: 883 744 29

Ram is saying that I need to bring it back to the dealership for a diagnosis. I am certain based on all the posts about this issue and my own prior experience, that the dealership will not find anything. Then I will be stuck with the cost of the diagnosis and still need to change the part.

It is shocking that no root cause has been found for this issue. This is a MAJOR safety issue and I am requesting some assistance with the cost of this repair.

Please let me know the best way to proceed.

Just thinking out loud, but would you try dielectric or light bulb grease on the connectors first? Silicone spray, rtv ?

It stalled again yesterday as I was pulling up the driveway at a very low speed. It's about 60' long with a slight incline. I gave it a very small amount of gas to crawl up but it sputtered at about 300 RPM for a half-second before falling on its face. Then it quickly auto-applied the e-brake and shifted itself into park. Still no CEL.

I was moving straight ahead both times it happened (not turning). Start-stop was turned off. Battery gauge was reading about 13.9V. Highly doubt there is any water leak. Both times I had been running errands for awhile- the engine was hot both times it stalled. Feels like it's getting fuel starved at a very low speed.

Taking it to the nearest dealer right after Christmas. Going to try to replicate it again so maybe they can get it to stall in their parking lot. This seems like a repeatable problem now.

Happened to me for the second time today. First time was about 3 months ago. Today, same location - stopped at a stop sign about to pull onto a busy road. As I pulled forward the truck
stopped abruptly, emergency brake was engaged. Dash displayed message to press brake to restart, and I think there was a message regarding Stop Assist?, but there were vehicles behind me and I was scrambling to get the truck started again. Engine very briefly ran rough as I pulled onto the road with Check Engine and Battery lights illuminated. Thought it might be a computer glitch, so I pulled over at the first available spot and restarted the engine. Battery Indicator light did not come back on, but Check Engine light is still on, so will pull a code on Tuesday (and why the heck doesn't a truck with this much computer implementation have an on-board code display?). Battery currently showing 14V. 2022 1500 LIMITED CREW CAB 4X4, 5.7L V8 HEMI MDS VVT eTorque Engine. 10,200 miles. Will report on progress.

And, as I was just looking through the Ram Connect app, I saw the Z49 Hybrid Control Processor Update Recall. Hopefully that will be the fix.

Just throwing my experience out there as well. I have a 23 1500 Lonestar V8 E-Torgue 4x4 20k. Have had 0 issues and this truck is my pride and joy. I took it in to the local dealership Dec 14th for oil change and for the recalls 08A and 97A. I picked it up later that day and noticed burning oil smell and figured they spilled oil on the engine and didn't clean it off. It is what it is I thought and figured I'd clean it off myself later that evening. Started worrying though about them not tightening the oil filter or drain bolt since they couldn't keep from spilling the oil, so I started watching my gauges. In the process I noticed the battery voltage seemed low ( 13.1 - 13.5 ). Didn't think too much about it at first. Then last Friday was pulling out of my sub-division, going slow and starting to get on the gas, then it shut down. Same story as others, pulled over, it shifted in to park... It crunk back up fine. But I've never had this happen before and all of sudden a week after the recall updates this happens. Same day I stopped to get gas. After filling up, I pressed the start button, as the gauges were doing there test, it all of a sudden shut off again. It never made it to cranking the engine before it turned off. Then Saturday went to crank it and it was completely dead. Metered the battery and it was showing 3.5 volts. I charged it and its been holding fine thus far. Took it to the same dealership yesterday, told them everything, they hooked it up, showed no codes and said everything seemed to be working fine and if I any more issues to bring it back to them. This is very frustrating!

Mind if I ask which dealer?

John Hiester in Sanford, NC
It's not the same dealer that I dealt with back in 2021, but it's got a 2 star rating on Yelp which is not good. I've changed the oil on my 21 Rebel four times now and although I've spilled a lot taking off the oil filter I've never gotten oil anywhere near any exhaust components. If they spilled oil putting it in the fill tube it would be possible to get some on the headers and exhaust where it would burn. It would also then be possible to get some oil on electrical connections. 13.1 - 13.5 is normal voltage. But the dead battery sounds like an electrical problem of some sort. It could easily be a coincidence, but maybe not. I would seek out another dealer or mechanic. Good luck.

Thanks! I'm hoping it all was just an odd coincidence of timing.

I had this problem on 04/2023 and it almost caused a major accident as well.

April 2022 my 2022 1500 Limited battery light came on, check engine light on and voltage was jumping from 10-11v. Took it to dealership and they said they reset the system and found no errors and it should be fine. April 2023, last Friday, same issues started happening, message popped up saying the truck was shutting down all non-critical systems, radio died, turn signals stopped working etc etc. I barely made it to the dealer when the truck decided to throw itself in park as I was turning into the lot. Service had to put a jump pack on it and ended up applying to TSBs. They claim a TSB for the auto stop start was draining the battery and that they applied the TSB, charged the battery, drove 20 miles and said it's fixed

Stetler Ram York, PA applied Z49. (DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE) had to argue to get them to give me a loaner.

Between 4/23 and now I've had the check engine light come on and go off as well as the battery light and low voltage. Called Stetler a few times and they claim there was no issue and it should go away after turning the truck on/off Really?!?!? My issue wasn't a stall situation like is being mentioned most places. The whole truck dies and fails to start with a dead battery.

12/27 I was on my way back from an urgent care visit with my 10yr old daughter in the pouring down rain and the truck decided to do the following
  • Display went red and stated "shutting down non-critical systems"
  • Lost power steering going around a sharp turn and almost hit a parked car
  • All kinds of lights on the dashboard lit up, no backup camera, no high beams etc etc
  • Then bam it locked up the emergency brake and through itself in park with cars sliding out of the way behind me to avoid hitting me
  • Called
Stetler Chrysler Dealer — Stetler Chrysler Dealership and they basically told me not under warrant even though same issue 8 months ago, I needed to call ram support and get a case # and even if I did that they wouldn't look at it for 1.5 weeks as they are backed up and understaffed
  • Roadside assistance was going to take 2hrs to get to me so I had my wife by a new battery ($300) and deliver with my tools. I installed it and was able to get home but the check engine light and batter light stayed lit. Batter voltage read 11.9-12.2 bouncing around
  • I put the new batter on charge all night, drove a few miles to grab breakfast and the voltage dropped from 12.2 to 11.9
  • Ram support case #88414885 was created and they wouldn't authorize a rental car for me stating recalls don't qualify for rental cars. I asked for a manager and was told they are all in meetings. I called back asked for a manager and was told they are all on calls.
  • Called roadside assistance again and had it delivered to Keene Dodge in Jarrettsville MD.
  • Had to install my new batter to get the truck started and on the roll back as the manual neutral override cable stopped working and would not allow the truck to move.
  • have pictures and video and plan on creating a website regarding this issue, going to social media etc. Had a major issue with a Ford Explorer once where the dealer/Ford kept jerking me around and a simple website and social media seems to cost that dealership enough money that they brought me in to discuss options to have it taken down.

Wonder if 3 times means lemon law???

@RamCares What's it going to take to get this resolved and get us proper assistance? Someone need to get killed while driving their $80k truck that decides to just stop in the middle of the road with no notice? We can't deal with only having 1 vehicle with work, kids, sports etc? The fact that this is a recall (RAMS FAULT) should automatically supply a loaner vehicle.

My old post was here
