I have the same question. Just bought a 12 inch off eBay and trying to install. Looks like the harnesses are different. I'll keep you posted.I would like to switch from the 8.4 to the 12.1 what do I need to do to make it work.
Nice RE: I have the 8.4 with Nav and I bought a 12.1 off craigslist for $400. I couldn't get the screen to come on. The AC/Heat worked. The sensors worked. The screen didnt. There was one too many harness wires on the 8.4. I called the service department and the guy said it's doable. But they are instructed to say they can't do it in the dealership. Help!!! Or I'm out of $400.Ok.. let me try to clear up what I said.
The main plug is the same.
What is different - the 8.4 Non Nav is a self contained unit.
the 12.1 and 8.4 nav have a brain mounted remotely and the screen is fed through a combination of a standard plug and an LVDS cable. The plug has power and can bus so that will not be present in the truck with 8.4 Non Nav( I do not think) and would have to be wired in.
Since you have the 8.4 Non Nav you would need the 12.1 brain the LVDS cable the main plug is the same although not certain that it will reach where the remote brain is mounted in the other since the plug goes to the center stack on that one and where the brain is on the others
The other thing to take into account is the HVAC. The 12.1 I am fairly certain only available with auto climate. So not sure how that will work.
The easier swap is going to be 8.4 nav to 12.1
I have heard that infotainment.com is working on this and have it somewhat working.
So If I hear anything on that I will update. For the DYI it will take some work to figure out the little bugs. because there could be sales codes that have to be enabled to make it all work correctly.
Like I said the main problem being the 8.4 with nav and 12.1 having ht telematics and the Non Nav not. They do have some Non Nav with telematics as well but not sure the new ram has that option.
Any update?Heres a picture. The yellow finger indicated what plugged back into the new 12 inch nav. That last plug had nowhere to go, and thats why im guessing the screen doesnt work as it should. Spoke to an audio guy who is going to work on it for me. He said he needs to see what the harness looks like in the trucks that come with this screen as a stock and he will go from there
You have to buy the new radio module also. You cant use the old oneNice RE: I have the 8.4 with Nav and I bought a 12.1 off craigslist for $400. I couldn't get the screen to come on. This has been said multiple times but does anyone have an actual part number for the multimedia module for the 12" screen? I haven't been able to find a supplier that has any other module aside from the one that is in use for the 8.4" (PN 68307655AD). I do understand that there are differences but what gives with the difficulty to find these? I would love to do the upgrade/conversion but the RAM community is being pretty silent in regards to this. You have to buy the new radio module also. You cant use the old one
The only one I saw on eBay was from a Rebel with the 8.4 nav. I believe the 12" screen uses a different module. The 4c module is on ebay for about 800$. I think that's all you need to make the 12" work
Update, you need to buy this part in order for the 12 inch nav to work. Even though the hazard lights wont work, everything else works.. part number is
Radio-Multi Media - Mopar (68317978AH)
If you're about to buy a new Ram, just have it added as an option. Seems that would be the safest bet so that it is covered by warranty. These 12" screens seem to be finicky at best.I would like to know as well. I'm about to buy a RAM and the one that I want has an 8.4 inch screen. I'd love to change it out.
