Transmission falling out of Drive on downshift, blinking, displaying "shift to P" and back

This happens all the time to my 2019 Bighorn when slowing down at a stop sign and a roundabout near my home. Last time I slowed to make a right turn into traffic and nearly had a truck run up my back bumper when the transmission faulted. Found this 17 page thread hoping to see a resolution, but frustrating to see nothing discovered yet. This is indefensible @RamCares, FCA owes us a solution now!
Indefensible is the word! @RamCares

I have been on this forum conversation for a while and also have 2019 bighorn that falls out of gear. Happens within 2ish miles from house first drive of the day. Doesn’t happen a lot, probably once every 20 drives but it’s really sh-tty when it does happen.

Film it every day until you capture it? Send the footage to Ramcares, your dealer, and a good lawyer. Ask for a fix. See what happens.

It's got to be very frustrating experience and, yes, I think it's a safety hazard. You should not put up with it and Ram needs to step up and fix it.

Very frustrating. Mine has fallen out of gear in every possible situation. Doesn't matter if the engine is cold at the beginning of the day or if the engine is warm at the end of the day. There's also a weird flutter in the rpms as it happens. I have caught it on video a few times, sent it to Stellantis, the dealer, etc. My truck was at the dealer four times. They rewired the engine harness twice. They rewired the dashboard harness twice. They installed a new throttle body. The replaced the TCM three times. They even put in a new shifter knob mechanism. Still does it. Albeit not nearly as frequently as last summer (which was several times a day). I'm hoping that the software fixes that have been reported on this thread will make their way to the 2019s. I have been given an extended warranty and some payments were reimbursed. So, that's something. However, I want the problem solved. @RamCares

Let us know what happens after the ESM replacement. My truck is being serviced at OCCDJR and the Service Manager told me he has his best guy on it (18 years with the dealership). The Service Advisor mentioned that they are also conferring with a regional mechanic (possibly FCA corporate?), which I’m wondering if he covers your dealership in LA. TX1500 has some really good insight as well as to possible cause. Something is better than doing nothing
They they resolve your issue? My truck is being serviced at the same dealership OCCDJR. But I feel like I’m being lied to

They did not resolve the issue. It still happens, albeit not as frequently. However, that's how it started when I got the truck new in 2019. It would happen every so often, maybe every two or three months. Then, starting in the summer of 2021, it began happening daily which ended up being several times daily.

I have a 2019 and it does the same thing, read through all the post. So there is not a fix for it ?

No fix that I've been able to find - either online or at the dealer.
Thanks, well for the money we pay for these trucks you think there would be a fix for it. Like them better than the other brands but now I think I'm gonna have to switch. Not too much worried about getting in a wreck myself its my 5 yr old and wife that I'm worried about. And now after reading all the dealership visits, its a big damn waste of time going back to the dealer over and over. Thanks for the reply.

You're welcome. Just keep checking back here. Seems to be a lot of information coming through this thread. @RamCares gives updates as well.

I have a 2019 BigHorn Hemi 4x2 and have had the same issue and dealer has no clue from the diagnostics. I have had a few close calls with the drivers riding my bumper. I cannot believe there is no real urgency on this issue. Not a trivial concern.

I also have a 2019 Laramie and this issue happens at least 3 times a week. I also have a stalling out inter. when this happens.

Maybe time for Class Action Lawsuit. Would be a real bummer since replaced my 2016 eco diesel with this one and had to go through the class action suit.

New here... I have a 2019 ram 1500 bighorn with the 5.7 non e torque with 46k miles.I have been having this issue as well. It started after I brought my truck in for a clunk feeling when I let off the break at a stop and also a steering issue. The steering wheel would get stiff and not return to center when turning. They did a software update and said try that and let us know. after that visit to the dealer my truck started going into having the same issue all of these other trucks are. Fast forward about a month or 2 later I bring it back for all the same issues and now this new one and the service advised is telling me that these issues are just the "characteristics of the truck". Well needless to say that pissed me off because I know that's a lie. Anyway they found the drive shaft to be bad which they changed and that clunking issue went away and the steering rack needs to be replaced. So I'm going back in this week for that. Also the tailgate just doesn't open almost everyday. It will either need to be pushed in and the button pressed or it doesn't do anything and it's stuck shut. I know I'm not an expert mechanic but I'm not stupid either. They just keep lying to me telling that the truck is supposed to be like that. I know it's a lie because the rental they gave me when they changed the drive shaft did not have a single issue I have with my truck. I really like the design of the ram and it's quiet and rides very smooth so I would like the problems fixed so I can keep it. I've been a Chevy guy since I started driving most of my friends are as well and Ive never seen any issue like this before. Ive never had any real problems with any of my Chevy's in the past aside from natural wear items. Ist so disappointing but if the ram continues to give me problems I'll have to go back to a Chevy.

It's not the "characteristics of the truck." This is a major engineering/software flaw and needs to be corrected. I just spoke with a friend who rented a new Jaguar two weekends ago. She knew nothing of the transmission issue with my 1500. After her rental was over, she told me that the Jaguar slipped out of gear a couple of times and she had to stop and put it in "P" and then back into "D." This has also been reported in Jeep, Chrysler, etc. - all with different transmissions. So, can we say software issue? We need to keep voicing our concerns and making those voices heard. Not time to stay silent. @RamCares

Hey there,

Your sentiments expressed here are certainly understandable. Once your vehicle is at the dealer, we’d like to escalate a case on your behalf. This will allow us to ensure your concerns are formally documented, as well as give one of our Case Specialists the opportunity to work alongside your dealer to find a solution. If this would be of interest, please send us a direct message.

My case was "escalated" by Stellantis as well - on three occasions. It did NOTHING! The dealer, Stellantis and their regional engineers could not figure out how to fix the issue. These people are inept. @RamCares

They are really just giving us the run around. Stopped talking to them. They stopped helping when i started complaining alot. I mean like they pulled my rental when i was out of town and had to drive 5 hours just to renturn my rental to the dealership even when i explained i was out of town on my anniversary with my wife. I was so pissed of that i came back just to give the dealership a peice of my mind i made sure to make a scene and everyone that buying anything from that dealership know how bad their customer service is. Well i hope they lost some sales. Im dealing with it now because new trucks are so expensive first chance i get im getting rid of it and never gonna get one again. I dont think they are going to do anything about it so im done wasting my time with them.

Since there are so many of these cases, has anyone considered getting a class action suit going?

I have a meeting with our company council on some unrelated things later this morning, I am going to inquire about a law suit and see what they say. our company keeps this firm on retainer so might as well take advantage of the resource.

I will post back to see what the recommend since my truck is owned by my company so essentially there is a claim for damages of lost work time/revenue.

I'm sure anyone that uses their truck for business purposes can have a claim.

we'll see.

I'm extremely happy with my Ram. But...that doesn't mean I don't think there can be errors in the manufacturing or design of these trucks.

A company should stand behind their product...especially if there is a warranty. There are enough reports of this hazardous behavior that Ram needs to take any such complaint seriously. There is a high likelihood of property damage and potential injury or death that this situation warrants immediate, proactive, action by Ram.

Since it seem Ram is not stepping up to assist those who report this, a class-action seems to be called for.

Let's see if that will help get this resolved before someone is hospitalized or killed.
