Steering Wheel Leather

All great comments, but still not sure why our 2016 Yukon, which also has a leather steering wheel, with 45,000, doesn't show any signs of wear. It may not be a trending issue, but I shouldn't be going through 2 wheels in 4 months time. Something's off....
All leather is not created equal or in most cases has a vinyl coating for durability. Either way it should not be happening in your new Ram. If you work for a living then you probably just need to wash your hands more often/better before you go for a drive; if you have a desk job, like me, then I'm placing my bet on toxic hands. Of course you have one Hell of a problem on your hands and we should forget about the wheel entirely.

Mines doing the same wearing at the 12:00 .
Looks like I need to go back to the dealer yet again. I’m getting tired of this. I’ve had the truck for a year now and I’m starting to question its integrity. 34431

Same exact issue after only 11.000 miles.
I have 10k on mine. But I noticed it starting a couple thousand miles ago.
I’ve had my truck to the dealer 10 times for all kinds of things, since new. I’m taking it in next week for the steering wheel, roof moldings popping up for the second time, the ac because it never seems cold enough, rear brake moan...
We’ll see what happens. My concern is they replace the steering wheel and it happens again. Unless they improve the quality this is going to always going to happen.

9,000 miles, mine looks like new so far...I do use leather cleaning/conditioning wipes regularly, it’s amazing how much dirt and oil collects on the wheel, I’d suggest doing the same if you get it replaced.

Sorry to hear of the trouble you are experiencing with your truck, Ramzy. If it would be of interest, we’d be happy to have this documented and connect you with a case specialist for an additional layer of assistance as you work with your dealer. Please follow up with us via PM to proceed in this manner.

How unfortunate, I have had zero leather wheel issues on any of my Ram's

Glad to see I'm not the only one.... I'm on steering wheel number 3 and forcing myself to stay away from the 12 o'clock position. I thinking it's the fake leather breaking down from the friction when turning the wheel at one point.

Maybe it's the liberals forcing us to keep our hands at 12:00 & 2:00.....?

I'm sure there is no conspiracy, just random bad luck. My new wheel seems to be perfect so far, also I'm a stone/brick mason and I promise you I put my wheel to task when it comes to dirty hands.

There is only a handful of unlucky owners and I would think eventually they will all get good wheels.

First off, what colors are the steering wheels that have issues? Is it all one color? That's one crucial bit of info to knowing if there is a trend.

Secondly, there are a LOT of complaints about driver's seat leather showing significant wear in less than a year, i.e. cracking & wearing off of the leather's surface where the driver slides in & out of the seat, and those with the Frost colored seat leather complain of their bluejeans literally coloring the surface of the Frost seat leather light blue.

It would seem the common thing here is that some 2019 Ram leather interiors, or at least specific colors of leather, are having durability issues.

Just speculating here, but it may be a internal-process-control problem from a specific vendor, or a new, untried vendor, or the like. Maybe it's a new process that is safer for the factory workers, and those kinds of changes always take a few years to work out the bugs (e.g. switching form oil-based house paint to modern acrylic enamels - took a long time, but the new paints are every bit as good now).

Who knows, but based on history it is certain that Ram/FCA will never come clean and explain what's going on. I feel for the Ram owners who spent $50-70k for their trucks and have had to replace steering wheels in less than a year because of worn leather. Not acceptable.

At 5K, my steering wheel looks the same as it ever did. (Bighorn Sport. Not heated.)
I use a lot of hand sanitizer, but I try to let my hands dry, before I grab the wheel. I mostly work inside, so don't get real dirty.

Just an update: When I took my truck in for the last Recall/ TSB issues I told them about the steering wheel. It took about a week after I picked the truck up, but they did approve for my steering wheel to be replaced. (y)(y)(y) Waiting for my rear brake parts to come in so I can get both replaced at the same time.

I used the heated steering wheel feature for the first time this morning. Within 30 seconds it got so hot it felt like it was burning my hands. Now my steering wheel feels rough and tacky, like the leather is starting to degrade. I only have 3,000 miles on the truck.

I've noticed mine having the same issues. I am going to bring it up at the dealership when I get my radio flashed and brakes fixed. I also do not wear jewelry. View attachment 22511
Mine looks exactly like yours. I wish I could get a pic but I'm working in California right now and my truck is in El Paso.

Well I took my truck in for the steering wheel wearing at the 12:00 position.
The said it was do to “out-side influence” and they WILL NOT replace it. They said it’s from lotion on my hands. I don’t use lotion! I was so mad. This may be the last straw.

Well ram has to approve them as they did on mine. I would contact ram and see what they can do. Maybe @RamCares can help?

Good idea. I guess I’m kind of giving up on this truck. I’ve had a lot of issues with it. Thanks for the suggestion
Don’t give up on it yet. I had (have) lots of issues with my Limited but still love it. Just let them take care of the stuff under warranty and fight for whatever they give you a problem with. I realize that spending $70k on a vehicle that has what seems to be never ending problems is frustrating but it’s a great truck and you can’t get better.
