Steering grind

Does anyone else have a grind noise when turning right with the wheel at this position? Dealer couldn’t find anything and said FCA engineering is aware of the issue but no fix as of yet. Curious as to who else has this problem.

I do I do. This is very timely as I was going to post something as well.

The TSB is S2019000003

Mine started randomly at about 16,000 miles. I just returned from my first major tow with a boat from OH to TN round trip. No indications while towing but after returning the issue started.

I took it to the dealer and they couldn’t resolve and gave me the TSB. It’s close but I’d say mine happens when turning both ways and on mine it almost felt like the brakes weren’t releasing fully. I have the hemi with e-torque and the more I thought about it that’s a software controlled braking program to charge the 48volt battery. It would especially do it if you lightly power braked while turning. Almost like the 4wd was engaging.

So, today I actually disconnected the battery and let it set for about 30 mins and voila took it out for a quick drive and I think this resolved it. Still need to test it more but ‘rebooting the truck’ seems to have fixed the issue.

Give it a try and let me know if this resolves it for anyone else.

Quick reminder that when you do this the cellular connection needs to reload certain apps and functionality (like the camera system) so don’t freak out. It’ll load back usually I a couple of hours.

Just following up on this that it was better for a short period and has returned to its prior behavior. I am awaiting a case assignment with RamCares and we’ll see what that leads to given there isn’t a known fix that the dealer is willing to explore because of the TSB being similar.

I’ve been having the same issue and have looked at different threads on this forum and it’s really hard to really figure out what’s going on. A user posted a few videos that describes my problem so it helps to get on the same page. These are the videos.

A lot of people have said that the noise actually comes from the rear but can be felt through the steering wheel and on the floor. Users have also reported the dealer fixing Differential problems or rear carrier bearings to fix a rubbing issue but I don’t know if they had the exact issue I’m having. At least your dealer is recognizing a problem. Mine is clueless and can never replicate it after 3 visits.

That video is the EXACT sound I have.

Mark @RamCares , the dealer said they can't do anything about it until engineering comes up with a fix. They have no idea what the real problem is.

@RamCares it was 2 weeks ago.

If you would be willing to PM me with your VIN, and preferred phone number and email, I would be happy to get a case escalated on your behalf to a specialist to discuss next best steps further.

So happy to see that i'm not alone with that! have the same noise when turning right since November. Last month dealer replaced sway bar links (was pretty sure that will not fixed it) and off course that was a missed diagnose. Need to get back to them as my car right now is also acting like a pirate ship (squeaks) every time when body moves.

So I had some spare time and disconnected the battery again to see if it would do the same as last time and sure enough it fixed it again but then came back. I can’t isolate how long or why but by doing this it seems to be something in the software/logic and for me it seems to tied to the brakes. I can trigger it if I do a slight power brake while turning but it’s present without that when turning at slower speeds.

Got my case number yesterday but haven’t been contacted yet.

FYI and not to slam the dealer but my initial visit they did a recall and adjusted a caliper. Said it was fixed and gave it back. I had my daughter pick it up. As soon as I drove it new it wasn’t fixed and proceeded to drop it back off only to be given the TSB after having it for the day telling me there was nothing they could do. When I dropped it off the 2nd time me and a tech did some laps in the parking lot and we were both clear on experiencing the issue. The tech also described it as a minimal 4x4 issue. If you’ve ever tried to steer on dry pavement in 4x4 you’ll know what I mean. It’s not nearly as pronounced as that but I get feedback in both the steering wheel and the brake pedal and it does feel like the brakes aren’t fully releasing until you go a certain speed and then they free up.

If I sit there with my foot on the brake and crank the wheel side to side I get an awful creaking noise in both directions. So again, the brakes. When the truck is normal and you do this it’s quiet and all you hear is the rubber.

Thought I’d give an update to my situation. I took RamCares up on the offer to be a liaison between me and my dealer. Night and day difference. As I said before, had my truck at the dealer for the rubbing noise 3 times prior and they never replicated the issue. Today the technician was able to replicate the noise after a ride around the block. As others have been told, they said it’s a known issue by the engineers and they don’t have a fix for it yet. For me, this is progress that I’m happy with and I feel at ease to put my new wheel/suspension set up on without having to worry about the dealer blaming that in the future. My dealer was also extremely generous to order new parts for two other issues I was having. They also offered me a ride back to my place and offered to pick me up once they were done. I don’t know what motivates the extra quality customer service by having that liaison but it was a breath of fresh air.

In the videos above that is the exact sound my truck made when turning right at slow speed. Dealer replaced the rack & pinion and that resolved the issue. Fixed at around 8k miles and has not happened again. 40k miles now

Cool. I still have yet to hear from my case manager. I’ll bring it up. I’m just ecstatic to have my problem documented. I guess it would be nice to have it actually fixed... My dealer has me setting the bar that low.

Crazy, I didn’t see this and created another thread but these videos seem to be the best replication of the issue I have but I still haven’t found a way to duplicate mine on demand. Right turns 8-12mph while entering or in parking lots 90-180deg turns, no bumps, is when it sticks out to me.

I have a 2019 Limited, air ride, etorque, stock tires, 45k miles and it started for me a few weeks ago. I had my front sway bar links replaced at 38k miles and a wheel alignment and body mounting bolts at 42k miles.

Does everyone have these marks shown in he pic below? I saw it on another site talking about this issue/noise and looked on my truck and both sides have these same marks. Seems unlikely to be the culprit but odd that it’s occurring and scraping vs just contacting.

Some are wondering if it’s differential related but I would think it would be more readily reproducible if that was the case.
