I have noticed on several occasions with start ups and while in park, the odometer moves forward several digits. I initially noticed it one morning after overnight parking. I start truck, I noticed that the odometer move forward several digits from a 1 to 4, from ~ 2300 to 2304, just on start up. Today it was even more pronounced. The last 3 digits moved forward on start up. From 2402 to 2513 while still in park! . Now I’m forced to record every startup bc I’m afraid the dealer is not going to be able to recreate this nonsense! You literally start truck and see the odometer moves forward without moving. And it doesn’t happen with all start ups, but I have noticed it about 4 times already in past several weeks. Truck is not my daily vehicle, and I use it sparingly, no long trips, so prior to noticing this, I was amazed that I even had > 1500 miles on odometer.

Can you upload a video or two of this happening?

I'm with the other posters though, it sounds like the normal startup procedure for the instrument cluster.

Personally, I think it's neat. It reminds me of the trip odometer on my 79 KZ650SR.

Off topic but that's a blast from the past. I had a 78 650SR.

Yeah, I debated mentioning it or my 05 VN800B, or neither, and went with that one. My dad had a 78 too, which was why I got this one.

Back on topic, I'm hoping the OP's issue is just the animation.

I'm with the other who have already speculated that you're just seeing the results of the normal startup procedure. To convince yourself, record your miles when parking on a post-it and stick it in front of your line of sight on the windshield or something. Next start up, it'll be right there for you to compare.

Yeah, as others have said the only way to know for sure is to record your mileage when you stop the vehicle, then check it when you start it the next time. Writing the mileage down when you start the truck is fairly worthless because it's already cycled through the numbers. What you want to know is where does the odometer stand when you shut it down.

I must have the same issue because I don't use my truck much and it always had more miles and mud on it when I go to use it next. My issue may also relate to having 2 18 year old boys and being away often for work. :)

Thank you,
Hopefully I’m imaging this ... I’ll record all start ups in in the new future

Well i can confirm with video evidence that my odometer is jumping forward a mile every once in awhile. More frequently lately I think bc i noticed it quite often. Very upsetting. My wife and I both the other week were trying to figure out how the heck we put so many miles on a truck we only drive short trips, now it makes sense.

If it's just a mile, I would suspect it's just a rounding issue. My odometer doesn't show tenth miles so I wouldn't be surprised that when you get to "2003.5" in miles, next time you start it shows "2004". But let's say it jumps a mile every single time you start it up. If it did it every single day, it would be an extra 365 miles in a year.

I guess you could have it checked out but unless you know the actual tenth miles I think you're chasing a ghost. Is there a way to turn on the tenth miles on the odometer?

Its while im driving, and it seems to be pretty frequent. I videoed it happening 2x in a 5 mile trip. Not only do i seem to be losing warranty miles but resale will take a hit too not knowing what my real mileage is, very disappointing.

If you are driving how can you tell it's jumping a mile ahead?

I am recording it with my phone
Yeah, but if you're driving, aren't you moving? And if you're moving, the odometer is going to advance. Are you saying you are sitting still, with the engine running, and it's jumping forward?

Im saying that instead of going from say 15530.0 to 15530.1 it goes from 15530.0 to 15531.0 then continues normally. We dont drive my truck that much really just short trips, my wife and i both are very confused how we put over 15k miles on it in 9 months. We purposely try to not drive it that much
