Hi Tdogie83 and illucid,

Sorry this is happening to you! If you're currently working with your servicing dealer for diagnosis, feel free to PM us and we'd be glad to provide an extra layer of assistance while your vehicle is in service.

Having a dealer correct this is pointless unless FCA already knows what is specifically causing it. My truck does this maybe 1 in 10 starts; or maybe 5 in 10........whenever it wants to. Unfortunately, it has not done it for the dealer. It was so loud yesterday after work that I thought my drive train was coming apart. So, if you want to send an engineer out to look at my truck; then I'm game. Otherwise I will have to keep driving it until it falls apart; I cannot afford to keep taking my truck back in to the dealer all of the time. I have never had a vehicle with so many problems.

How many miles do you have? I have just over 9k, and it hasn’t done it for close to 2 mos. Have no idea why it stopped...didn’t do anything different other than starting it a lot with remote start.

I have just about 6,000 miles. It has been doing it from the beginning. Mine might not do it for a month; then will do it every other start. It is definitely a metallic sounding clank coming from the transmission/transfer case area.

Just made an appointment for this and other things since I'm due for my first oil change. My has done it since new, I now have 8000 miles on it. I have not notice a set pattern, seems random but does seem worse when not use remote start. Mine was built in June.

mine does the same off and on. was funny because immediately after reading this thread a month ago, it didn't happen again until recently. now that I see this video, i'm much less concerned. would still like it resolved though.

Mine does this also..here is a video I found..maybe?

That is my video, truck still does it I just remote start it and no clank. Easy fix but terrible customer feedback on a problem many customers are having. Took it to the dealer twice "Could not replicate sound" even though I have 4 videos, one even with my VIN to prove it is my truck!! Dealer needed me to leave the truck there for a week but would not give me a rental so I said screw it.

Yep, I really can't afford to leave my truck at the dealer without a replacement. I am getting the rear brake recall fixed on Thursday; but I need a vehicle and can't leave my truck there indefinitely to have them investigate the start clanking......that's why I said I'll just wait until it comes apart. I guess I better start looking for an extended warranty because its starting to look like I will need one.

It's not just our truck that does it. These ZF HP transmissions are the cause, F150s have the clank worse than ours.

I have this noise as well. Dealer said they couldn't replicate it. Patiently waiting for some sort of resolution.
So this is a big issue with high mile F150 ecoboost pre the 10 speed. A key to this is to park your pickup at the dealership and tell them to leave it alone for the next 24 hours. Come in first thing in the AM and take them out and start the truck. It will make the noise. You have to give it time to back siphon. On the Fords it is the hydraulic lifters that over time slowly begin leaking backward. Only occurs when engine is cold. Sounds like your starter isn't kicking out. Pretty harmless but until you know what it is it is worrisome.

3 days ago I started hearing this clunk at startup. Cold, hot, uphill, downhill, brake, no brake, doesn't matter and it's not super consistent. Then just yesterday I heard a clunk while turning left twice and today while turning right once. Truck has around 2050 miles on it now. No clunks, clangs, or clanks prior to 3 days ago.

Going to see if I can get it into the dealer this coming Tuesday when I have a day off.

I have the same problem have a 2019 ram 1500 it’s been in the dealership so many times I’ve gotten to know all the service writers and some of the service mechanics same type a scenario for starting my vehicle the initial start makes a large bang and of course it doesn’t do it for the dealership they put it on the computer they tell me everything is tuned up well you’re right it’s pointless to continue taking it to the dealership they’re not going to look outside the box and try anything different to fix it .
