I have 5,644 miles on my Laramie w/ off-road package. Coming from a long line of new Chevy pickups dating back to 1988. I am very happy with the new Ram, best truck I've ever owned so far. Don't miss having a Chevy one bit.
The off-road package gives a firm ride, but I didn't buy it for the decals, to drive to the mall. My last Chevy rode like an old Buick & bounced around like a pogo stick off road, the Ram is definitely more firm. It's perfect in it's intended environment, off the road. Much like a 3/4 ton, without the bad mileage. Suspension is spot-on. I build new homes & get into rough terrain frequently, suspension calibration is perfect. If you want on road comfort and don't take your truck in off road situations where there are deep ruts and other rough terrain, for heaven's sake, don't get the off-road package.
Sure, there are little nuances, things that could be done differently. In my area, there are road signs ever couple hundred feet the way it seems, many are highly reflective, and the auto high beams go dim-bright-dim-bright all the time. Guessing maybe a software fix will come along for that (Ram rep told my dealer they're aware of the issue). Have that function disabled, no big deal. In more rural areas with limited signs, it works fine. The headlights are awesome; I'm thinking the power of the headlights is what's at the root of the confusion for the high beam sensor, too much intense reflection from many of the new road signs.
The big Ram emblem on the tailgate has many small black spots that seem to be embedded in the chrome, no amount of cleaning seems to take them off. I'm sure they'll replace this, not a big deal to me.
The 8 spd transmission shifts perfectly, it's always in the right gear & is very smooth. Gives a little "clunk" sometimes when coming to an aggressive stop; also no big deal. I notice it but not worth whining about. Throttle response of the hemi is much, much better than the Chevy, I absolutely hated the lag time between hitting the gas & the engine actually responding in the Chevy, that was borderline unacceptable, in 85,000 miles I never got used to that annoyance. The AC in the Ram is not as brutally cold as the AC in my Chevy Express van (which is an overall underwhelming vehicle on many levels), but it's at least as good as my '14 Silverado if not better; the AC performance of that vehicle always seemed to be a little sub-par when it was hot. The Ram is fine so far; we'll have to see how it heats this winter, unknown at this time. The ventilated seats are just great! Overall it's a very comfortable vehicle, could go on & on about that. For the first time this past weekend I had a chance to sit in the new Chevy, which would have almost certainly been my next vehicle based on past behavior. Yuk. And that was an LTZ. It looked like a step down from my '14 Chevy LT. They really shot themselves in the foot there. Couldn't believe how cheap it seemed compared to my new Ram. Didn't get to drive it or adjust things, but the dash seemed really high. There's just something about looking out over the dash & hood of the new Rams that just works for me!
I don't monitor economy like some of you guys do, I'm much more concerned with getting work done than tracking my gas mileage, but per the on-board monitor, I've gotten over 20 on the highway on a 150 mile trip (much of that was at over 70 mph), which I thought was great. All around it's in the 18-19 range, again, best truck I've ever owned.
Love the flat load floor in the back seat area. So convenient not having the hump back there. Mine's an extended cab & there is very good room back there, better functionally and comfort wise than my '14 Chevy extended cab. Flat floor extends nicely under the seat area as well. Very well thought out. Love the big storage tray in the bottom/center of the dash on the bench seat models, very handy for me.
The one thing I was very apprehensive about was the dial shifter. I really didn't think I wanted that, it was one of my biggest hangups to getting the Ram. Well, Chevy guys, after 5,000 miles, it's no big deal. Took a couple weeks to get used to but now it's second nature. It's actually less work just grabbing the knob & turning it, as opposed to raising your arm & grabbing a big column mounted lever. It's not the issue I thought it would be.
I do miss the steps in the corner of the bumper of the Chevy. The new generation's step is even better than the last generation. Hope those foldable steps Ram is coming out with are a decent alternative. The new Chevy definitely has a wide box inside, I like their idea of a "ram box" inside the bed, that looks really slick. I know there are aftermarket options for this, but the new Chevy has that wide box & it looks like their storage bins might work out well.
The 8.4 u connect with the Alpine sound system is great! Very happy with that. Android auto isn't all I thought it'd be but I need to learn more about it, no doubt.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, had a lot to get off my chest. Love the new Ram!
