Front end clunk while turning - FIXED - TSB # 23-047-18

I’m so angry after my service appt I can’t even post about right now. I wouldn’t have anything appropriate to type.
Sounds like someone got the "everything's fine" from their service dept. Ouch.

It’s all in articulation of the suspension when it pops. I personally feel that just turning or any bumps would possibly be a ball joint. But mine seems to only pop under articulation like going into my driveway etc.
Same here brother!!! I’m team sway bar!!!!! All day. And when it turns out to be the sway bar, I want my dealership to give me free “whatever” lol

Haha yeah I’m really hoping i see a change after parts come in for mine. My 2 cents as a lowly tech is the bars were bent incorrectly and not allowing proper travel of the links. The pop I think is from the link popping. Also everyone don’t get your hopes up with the star cases. It’s just a paper trail.

Assuming your theory on the sway bar is correct, do you believe this to be a design flaw of the sway bar itself or a batch of mismade parts?

Are you my service manager???? Lol. He just gave me an idiotic example with the Star case on his truck.

What do you mean? Also I’m gonna assume if I’m right which I could totally be off base, that it’s a batch of parts. If the design was wrong it would have been caught early on and basically every truck would be doing it.

That’s a joke. My service manager said the star folks aren’t that smart. You just said the same thing so I’m like ——hey, are my service manager cuz he just told me that face to face —

They definitely heard it and said they were concerned about it. But they couldn’t identify source and said they would need it for a period of days to look at it. Then they said they couldn’t do that for another almost two weeks since they don’t have any loaners available. I also have a severe vibration around 70 mph+ that they were supposed to look at. I figured balancing the tires would likely take care of that. They said they can’t replicate it since the roads around here only go up to 55 for the speed limit and I would have to pay for it. I had also asked them to put some locking lug nuts on which they would only do for almost $80 purely for the labor. So I have a brand new truck with a clunk that is also not safe at highway speeds.

Think about that the service manager doesn’t deal with them directly. It’s us techs who gotta talk to them. The star agent for my truck claimed FCA has no known cases of this noise.

Mine looks like the build date is June 29th 2018. Yay Friday build lol.
And I have the clunk. No air suspension. 20180830_063629.jpg

I have also taken notice early on if the extreme angles and orientation of the sway bar links, combine that with the strands of rubber peeling off daily, the plastic portion of the bushing that is walking out (left side) and the cracks in the sway bar mount brackets on some trucks, I also think they problem is sway bar related. I don't completely trust what Warvet's service department is saying though because they also said loosening and tightening fixed 2 trucks. Lol

Perhaps the FCA technician on this thread can shed some light on the cracks in the sway bar mount brackets since my dealer never got back to me on it.

I was thinking the same thing. Mine was built July 18th and has clunk. I have an appt with dealer tomorrow and I am curious to see what they say.
I read the label wrong. Mine was actually built July 7th.

Still very confident that those lines you are seeing in the sway bar mount aren't cracks

I surely respect your view. However, I fully 100% trust mine. Each time I go in there with a "forum remedy" they actually try it. They don't tell me to get lost or "it's in my head" ....they did their fix to three trucks, including mine and all 3 owners, including me, thought it was fixed. Mine is 99% better now. Down from about 10 clunks a day to 1 or 2 extremely light ones. @immersivenc is not from my city, but they are even talking to him via telephone and email and really trying to figure this thing out.

Today, they even removed the sway bar on the manager's truck to see if it worked. I told them to try that based off of this forum and they did. The clunk was still there. Like I told them today, while there at lunch.....it's not their fault. They are doing their very best to find a solution to an issue that is actually an FCA issue. When I asked them to tighten the chassis, based on this forum, they did it without hesitation.

Until they lie to me, ignore me, dismiss me......I'm rolling with them. They are willing try anything. I'm not an expert in my daily profession and some things I do are trial and error to find a solution.....so, I'm cool as long as they keep trying. BTW, they've never even heard or felt my truck clunk. They just took my word based on 2 others having the same issue.

Just checked my sticker and mine is April build and Friday the 13th!
No clunk with Air

So me loosening the sway bar experiment was a failure. The clunk is still there :/. I will be re-torquing them down tomorrow. I have no time or patience to try to get my local dealers to try and fix this issue. I am just going to have to deal with it until something breaks and then they have no choice but to fix what broke.

This is consistent with @warvet 's dealer's findings earlier today. It's good to rule things out also!
