+1 on the cord…. find an original apple lightening cable, nothing aftermarket, and test it again. Apple car play tends to be very sensitive and I find aftermarket cables can be very hit and miss.

make sure you are using a stock, apple cable. Aftermarket cables can be hit and miss - even the expensive ones. Connection is really finicky and is only consistent for me when I am using the stock cable.
