what do you all think - used Limited with 4k miles with these options - $48k good deal? Should I do it? It’s also private party so they can help with dmv fees and taxes

I would assume that truck cost $66,650 x 0.80 (or 0.75) when purchased new and well with good rebate/incentives. So $53K - $50k, then add TTL fees.

Mileage is pretty low. I’m not sure what I would personally consider as an additional discount because it is used. Right now trying to buy that truck new might not yield a 20-25% discount either. It’s a weird time.

If you like the truck, and are comfortable with the prior ownership history I think it’s a good starting point. I’d probably want to be at least $45-$46k + TTL fees, or lower since is a 2019 and if sold in 2018 could be 2-2.5 years old.
That’s 30% off MSRP, so I don’t think unreasonable. But I like a good deal.

One thing you could do is just email a few dealers with a new version of that truck and see what sort of deal you can get. Then decide.

Hello, new here. Located in Los Angeles CA and looking to purchase my first pickup truck to tow a camper trailer (approx 5-6k pounds) and to have fun with the kids (parks, beaches, etc)

Test drove a 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel Crew Cab yesterday, fully loaded with Safety and Convenience Group, Comfort and Convenience group, blind spot & cross-path detection, Rebel 2 and 12 equipment group, dual pan sunroof, black appearance package, and spray in bedliner. It has the 5.7 Hemi with e-torque. MSRP $62,525 and the most they are willing to do is $3k off (apparently thats 8 x $250 coupons and $1000 rebate). How is this for a deal?

What dealer in Los Angeles? That discount isn’t the greatest. I’m not sure what the going rates are for the Rebels at this time...they typically aren’t as discounted as Big Horns or even Laramies. There are plenty of dealers in Southern California, so I’d definitely look around the region, and not stop looking just after one dealer. I’m from the region too. Stay away from Russell Westbrook in Van Nuys. Have you checked out Hunter Ram in Palmdale/Lancaster?

Ive been having a hell of a time truck shopping the last couple months. You would thing with the current economic climate the prices would be fair, but seems like every dealer is giving the excuse that they are low on inventory and are having to buy cars/trucks from other dealers just to have somewhat of an inventory because the factories were shut down the last 3 months. And this goes for all brands, cross shopping Toyota, Chevy, GMC, Ford, RAM, and most are basically just doing whatever factory rebates are available and no dealer discounts.

While there are other dealers within 100 mi radius, it is difficult finding options/specs that I would like. But this is a RAM for Raptor money. Doesnt make sense. Also I dont fee like emailing 50-100 dealers in other states, dont have that kind of time on my hands

@beemerb0y yeah unfortunately the last couple of months really haven’t been a buyers market with low inventories, however, that doesn’t mean there still aren’t deals to be made. From the sounds of it, the dealer you’ve mentioned basically wants you to pay full MSRP (then minus rebates/incentives) which you should never have to pay full MSRP. I’ve been keeping an eye on inventory levels, and it does appear that they are increasing with a lot of trucks in transit to dealers across the country. If you can wait a few weeks, dealers might be more willing to deal.

I bought a new 2019 big horn for 20% off MSRP two weeks ago, deals are def hard to negotiate on the 2020s and the dealers in SoCal are marking up the rebels by $5000! WTF

I'd wait a month or so and you'll almost guarantee a better deal. Inventory levels will be back up and with the economy slowly tanking due to COVID it's going to turn into a buyers market soon.

Sticker on my rig was 62K and after discounts, out the door was 54K. I was also lucky, I purchased when states were still in full lock-down so the dealers were slow and willing to deal to move units.

the dealer was also willing to take 20% off big horn and other lower end models with fewer options, cloth seats, etc. Heck they even had leftover 2019s sitting there.
Decent discounts on Laramie's and Limiteds, pretty much nothing but rebates for Rebels.

We just purchased a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 in San Diego and can agree that inventory levels in So. Cal , especially for 4x4s, are low right now. MSRP for our truck as 52,200 and we paid 44,700 (15% off) = 3,000 rebate and 4,500 dealer discount. We also negotiated $1,000 more for our trade in than carmax was willing to give. The had 40 ram 1500s on the lot and only 2 were 4x4s. Big horns have better rebates at the moment but the wife wanted leather. Better deals may come in the near future as inventory levels go back up but our expedition was giving us trouble towing and we didn't want to wait since we have several camping trips planned.

Price wise that is a pretty good deal there was a Laramie with similar options msrp of 62k listed at a dealer for 44,200 with 9k miles and it sold in 2 days. You can still add the extended mopar protection as well.

Do you plan on towing or hauling much with the truck? Run the VIN through the Ramtrucks.com towing/payload and it will give you the exact numbers. If it really only has the 3.21 rear end you may be surprised at the results.

Correct I was referencing DOP who was asking if the 2019 Limited Used was a good price and that one looks like it has the 3.21 so I wanted them to be aware that not all rams can pull 11k lbs also they will be limited on payload with all those options as well probably in the 1400 lbs range instead of 1600 or 1700.

I assume you meant to say 20% off either lone star or big horn models? The longhorn is in the same class as the Limited, but would be awesome if they were discounting them like the lower trims.

Check out Bluebonnet Ram in New Braunfels, TX. They have two black appearance Rebels more loaded than what you test drove (have MFTs and Ramboxes, etc.) and dealer discount is over $5k without even trying to negotiate plus rebates.

Agree I haven’t seen anywhere close to 20% off a Limited or Longhorn. In TX rebates are only $1500 and highest dealer discount I’ve seen is 13.39%. I can get 17.04% off with the paltry rebates and adding on $1000 USAA cash so I’m just waiting. This time last year Ram was giving 25-30% off Limiteds.

Hey guys, I'm new here also and in the market for a Longhorn truck. Really appreciate this forum, it's been super helpful navigating these strange times with dealers and pricing etc...

I'm torn between a couple options of building vs trying to wait out the inventory market to come back. I've spoke to a couple dealers in NC & SC (Volume dealers). I never thought it would have been this difficult to get good service buying a truck but before the last 2 dealers I spoke with it was like the dealership didn't care if they got my business or not so I'm still truckless lol. When I go to ask about pricing via phone I could not get a straight answer and went to test drive a limited over the weekend and found out they baked in all the rebates to the online price that 99% of people don't qualify for anyway so I walked out when they started saying 8% interest rates. I was kinda insulted, I guess I just look dumb haha.

I've seen a 2020 Longhorn model with options I want but in Black (Love/Hate relationship) MSRP $70,400, online price $60,013... this includes the national incentives but not the specific qualifying incentives. This is a volume dealer, what is the going rate these days on discounts, are dealers coming off these MSRPs more with negotiating? This dealership has like 17+ longhorns in stock.

The other dealer quoted me a price to build the truck I want MSRP $69,495, dealer discount $6,624 = $62,871 plus any rebates available when RAM arrives. This is a 2021 model ready in 8-12 weeks. I've never built a truck but to me this seems like it would be cheaper assuming RAM gets back to their normal discounts around October. I've heard that was a good time to buy a truck but this has beena pretty crazy abnormal buying a vehicle experience thus far and who knows what will happen.

That said - I'm coming back to RAM after selling my 2013 Copperhead Pearl Laramie which I've regretted ever since...

Advice much appreciated!

From what I’m seeing with the current market and dealers not really wanting to deal, $10,000 off MSRP seems to be a great deal. Typically you want to get at least $10k off MSRP, but with the current market it might be tough to really get anything more.

You can try to locate the truck on the website CarGurus (most dealers are on there) and you can see how long it’s been listed on CarGurus. That usually gives you A pretty good idea of how long the truck has been on the dealers lot. If it’s been there a long time, you can try to work that towards your advantage with getting a little more of a discount. Again, with the current market, no guarantees.

And as far as ordering a 2021, you most-likely won’t be seeing very good incentives/rebates on them. They’re really not that great at the beginning of a model year. You’ll get a much better deal if you can find a 2020.

I disagree. In TX limiteds have $1500 in rebates at the end of a MY which is horrible. 2021s will have something because Ram wants to get sales with volume from everything they’ve lost over the three months they were shut down and with unemployment so high. 2020s are a year old the second you buy it and the horrible rebates won’t come close to covering the greater depreciation of a one year old vehicle.

I suggest you decide what you are willing to pay for the truck you pick. Tell the selling dealer that price and yes/no. Cut to the chase. Who cares how they get there (dealer Discount, rebates, some combination). I wouldn’t invest a lot of your time with any of them. They either want to sell or they don’t. If your price is reasonable you’ll hear from someone. I’d do it all via email. - Paul G.
