Sub woofer

Has anyone installed a new sub and disconnected the HK?

If so, did it meet your expectations in terms of better more linear bass response?
I’m also trying to figure this out.. I’m trying to find a “Crew Cab specific” subwoofer box. I bought an “Atrend” 10” box for my 2010 Ram Big Horn. Made specially for the 4th Gen models. I can’t find anything for my 2019

I searched interwebs door an hour. Only found one place but that was $$$$ custom stuff. I'll likely resort to building my own. $10 in mdf isn't a big price. Although the time might be a fair amount.

My biggest question is do I do a 10" sub or 12". I can get about .6cf in the space I'm looking at. The 12" shallow Mount from infinity said ideal is .75 cf. Thanks 10" shallow is .50 cf. I'd prefer a 12", but to small a box can negate the size increase pretty quick.

Foxacoustics.com has three options available. Dual 12 ported box, dual 10 ported box, dual 10 sealed box. Keep in mind all but the sealed 10" box will cause you to lose access to the in floor storage bins.

I like being able to use my storage bins and would much rather prefer a ported box. A single 12 would be plenty. Or dual 10 ported that maybe raised the seats up to get room that way instead of sticking out

A 12” will provide a little deeper bass for rap/hip hop, and a 10” will be a little more “crisp/tighter” bass for rock/metal music. I got the 10” Kicker CompR sub. It needs only a small box to perform well, which is what I like. A 12” requires a much larger box

Alot of that has to do with the box as well. 10" subs can provide plenty good bass for rap/hip hop type music but the box is probably the biggest part of the puzzle. A sealed box will provide more accurate, tighter bass regardless of what size sub is in it. A ported box will give deeper, more rumbly bass that suits that type of music better. After having both, I prefer the ported style box over a sealed box regardless of music type. Then of course, making sure the box is built properly for the sub you are using plays a huge role as well. Have to have enough air space.

Size of subwoofer has almost nothing to do with the type of bass it produces. This is heavily dependent on enclosure and design of the woofer. Size of woofer also has nothing to do with size of box in needs. There are 8" woofers that need significantly more airspace than some 13" woofers.

Anyways - @wildh24, even building your own you are still probably looking at $100 in materials. A sheet of MDF is up to $30, add in glue, nails/screws, fiberglass and however you want to finish it - it adds up quick.

@ksn240 I did not see on FoxAcoustic's site that the dual 10 ported blocks the storage bins, do we have confirmation of that?

Yes. I emailed them to check and see. I was hoping that was not the case. Here was the response.

"The dual 10 sealed sub box is the only one that doesn't block the floor storage."

That is disappointing. I wish they had pictures of them. I think their boxes look cheap and fit better in the basic trims. I guess I could get one professionally wrapped to make it look better. A pair of 10TW3s would still be pretty decent.

I had one in my 2013 and it seemed to be made pretty well. Its just because they are pretty much rhino lined. I would order the dual 10 box but dont want to lose my storage bins, and prefer ported over sealed.

I had the JL Audio stealth box in my last Ram and the bass was perfect. Coupled with an amp and bass remote, the sound was exactly what i wanted. I would love to go this route again. But JL doesn't go up the 19's yet. I sealed box in the right side storage bin with a 10" sub (preferable JL for the clarity and tightness) would suit me fine. Then it's just a matter of getting it to work with the factory HK system.

Just finished the box. Volume ended up just shy of .53 cf. So I'm going to have to go with a 10". Don't know any 12s that'll work in that size. This is about as much volume as you're going to get and still have access to the ram bins and leave the under seat storage in place.

Mounting depth will be 4.5". So now to find a good 10". Will be driving with an Alpine 500w@2 ohm. Signal will come from the PAC unit.

I need to either carpet it or rhinoline it yet, but the shell is there.

So far, I've got about $28 into this, but 4 hours of fabricating.

I would be curious to trying a different sub with the stock amp. Ive taken the sub out to add polyfill and deadening (which helps) and after examining the stock enclosure, and sub Ive come up with this:

The Stock sub is super thin (Alpine System) One could make a 1"plus "spacer" ring for a new Shallow mount sub to mount to. Not sure how deep any other shallow sub is? I would have to do some research. Just would be nice to have something with a little more Throw. I am hopefull someone like JL will come out with a nice enclosure that fits in the same spot as the stock one, with a built in amp, that just plugs into the factory plug, and only needs a power and ground run.

In the 4th gens, people were using a slim pioneer sub in its place. The 2019s though are a bit strange. The sub is a triple voice coil sub each one at 2 ohms and each voice coil running off it's own channel. Nobody makes anything like that. Best option would be a 2 ohm dual voice coil and you would just be losing one channel worth of power. Kicker has an 8" sub that requires less than 3 inches depth.

I think an issue with that enclosure is going to be volume and rigidty. It's pretty thin flexible plastic and not very big. Very shallow and small so dropping in another sub also is kind of not taking advantage of another drivers capabilities. The stock system and sub isn't bad... If it didn't have such overbearing resonance at certain frequencies, you could work around it with the EQ settings a bit. The problem I have personally, is that in order to tone down that range you end up pushing the bass way down to -7 and that kills off the whole sub 200hz frequency spectrum.

It'll be interesting to see how the system sounds once I get the JL 10TW1 mounted in the box I'm building.

I like this and think it would work perfectly for what you (and I) are looking for. There is another thread on a box like this that gives the dimensions (same as yours?). Here is what I want to do and what I believe I have to do: Build a box for a 10" JL Audio sub; amp it, Bass remote controller. Now with that said, I figured I will need the AmpPro system to clean up the signal to interface with the HK system. If I understand all [email protected] - Ampro - Amp - sub. Not sure if it's that simple or not. Oh I'll be removing the factory POS sub.

@Adrianp89 See above sir

Yeah I think we're on to the exact same thing! Ampro and JL shallow 10 are en route. Now I just wish I would have carpeted the box. Instead I used some Rust-Oleum bed liner I had sitting around. Holy crap does that stuff have a potent odor. Hope it goes away as it dries. One could get quite high in my garage.

You have the dimensions of the box you used? Or is it from that other thread?

Anybody know if the Alpine amp is stable for 1 ohm loads? Kicker has an 8" sub with 1 ohm dual voice coils. It would allow you to push more power through it since you can only use 2 of the 3 channels.

Yup that simple. Just plug RCAs into the amp pro.
