Stop and go shudder/vibration

Alex
Hoping you can point me in the right direction. Just bought the new 5th GEN 2020 ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7 hemi with etorque. I noticed when accelerating from a stop I feel a Shutterfly vibration. At first I thought it possibly had to do with me towing my trailer but noticed it happens whether I am hitched up or not. I went onto Google and ask the question and it put me onto this forum. I have now also registered with this forum.
possible you can point me in the right direction and if anybody has had this problem with the new 2020 ram could let me know what the outcome was would be appreciated.
I've got a 2020 1500 laramie with less than 500 miles and I've started to notice it shuddering when I take off from a stop occasionally. Like it's starting in 4th or 5th gear instead of first

I regret to hear of your situation, @MJVC. If you would be willing to follow up with us via private message, I would be happy to learn more to determine how to best assist you at this point.

Is there a way to tag this issue traffic so I don’t get the couldn’t duplicate response or another update that doesn’t correct the problem? Just don’t want to make another trip to the dealership and be disappointed again

I certainly understand your sentiments. If you are planning to address this again with a dealer, I would be happy to escalate a case on your behalf so that you have the support of a specialist as you work with your dealer. Our team is just a private message away to get the process started.

I was able to get the shudder to happen a few times yesterday. What I think is happening is that it isn't coming out of eco mode so I am basically accelerating with only half the motor, at low speed, in a high gear (3rd, 4th, or 5th) making it bog down.

So my shutter doesn’t happen periodically. It happens every time I accelerate from a complete stop.

Hate for this to be my first post but I'm having the same issue and came across the discussion doing a Google search.

I'm currently towing a small 4k lbs camper cross country and started feeling the vibration/shutter upon initial take off a couple days ago (11k miles) and thought it was the camper brakes until I recently detached the camper and realized the truck is doing it with or without the camper. I poked my head out the window while attempting to replicate and heard a funky noise associated with it and the sound appeared to be coming from the Axle area. I visually inspected the driveshaft and tried to give it a good shaking and twisting to see if the u joints were bad but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.

Here's my thought process: u joint problem, hill brake assist problem, slipping tranny problem, differential or bearing problem.

So far nobody on this forum has any resolution/s to the issue or any known problem areas to inspect, and this is pretty concerning given from my recent experiences of this shutter/vibration.

I'm hoping and praying nothing breaks over the next 3k miles while towing b/c having to stop at a dealership who can't immediately fix the problem is going to ruin a big vacation and cost a whole lot more in trying to figure out how to get home.

I, too, have the “bump” when stopping and starting. Today I messed around under the truck. The carrier center bearing for the driveshaft, the mounting nuts weren’t very tight so I tightened those. Also the transmission mount was basically hand tight so I tightened that too.

Haven’t driven since I tightened those things. I’ll report back if it solved anything.

Okay going to try to explain this best I can. So I have noticed ther last few weeks that when J come to a stop and when I accelerate from a stop that I feel what i can only explain as a stuttering type of vibration. It feels kind of like when towing and that slack feeling you get when coming to a stop or initial acceleration. I am going in for the recall next week and would love to know how or where to point to with this. Brakes, mounts, driveline? Thanks
I have a 19' Ram Classic Crew 4x4 with the 5.7 and I have what I've referred to as a "shimmy" in the rear end when I take off. I've got a few more miles on mine however because I used it for my business to tow a 12' landscape trailer with lawn care equipment. I notice the shimmy/vibration when taking off - doesn't happen all the time but about 75% of the time, it seems to happen more when there's resistance like when I used to tow my trailer or when (no trailer attached) the wheels are turned and the rear has more resistance pushing the truck forward due to the wheels being turned. It only lasts about 1-2 seconds at take off from a complete stop, once the truck has moved forward about 20-30 feet & straightens out it stops. I'm planning on taking mine in soon to have it looked at as well as for the notorious "Hemi Tick" - but mine ticks for a good 2-3 minutes not seconds like most others experience, I can also hear it at times when I'm at cruising speed on the highway. Wish me luck on that one. I wish I knew about the tick before I invested in my Ram, I don't think I would have gone with Ram because of it.

I've had the take-off vibration since around 3k (I have close to 15K now). I had the latest transmission TSB done applicable to my truck. It didn't make it better or worse.

Over the months of owning the truck, I have noticed that the vibration does not occur when you are on the slightest of inclines or declines. This has lead me to believe that it is a hill brake assist issue. That is to say, the hill brake assist is active even on level surfaces. I'm just speculating, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed the same? I can drive around my neighborhood and know exactly at which stops I will notice the vibration (i.e level surfaces) and the ones that causes no vibration ( inclines or declines). Maybe RAM needs a hill start assist software update. Again just my observation and speculation.

Do you have a short bed for the 6'4 ? I'm wondering if it's more common among one length than the other

I have the short bed (5'7"). I've been driving with hill assist off and the shutter has definitely improved. However, it is definitely still present from time to time, but no only in the rear. I wonder if it could be the nature of the 3.92 gearing? Anyone with the 3.21 axle ratio also have the slight shutter from a stop?

I have the 3.92 axle as well and the 6’4” bed. Nobody seems to have answers on any kind of resolution. Quite frustrating. All this money spent on this truck

My truck, 2020 Limited with ETorque does this from a stop if stop and go has engaged. The stop and go doesn't seem as smooth/seamless as in my 2015 XF but this is what it is in my case. Its the combination of the engine being off at a stop and the driveline being unloaded. When you release the brake and the engine restarts, it reloads the drive line and that's the jolt you feel when moving forward. My Z06 does the same thing when I don't pre-load the drive line when making a run and it has a fully built driveline. This is most likely the backlash built into the ring and pinion that you are feeling combined with the un-loading then sudden loading of the drive line.

This is my truck, 2020 ETQ Limited with 1300 miles

My 2003 Ram has similar backlash in the diff

Sounds like the Etorque when it's in the break-in period...?

Only shutter I have in my 3.21 bighorn is when the Etorque kicks the engine back on...but it's not harsh at all. Otherwise...nothing on my end.

I do not have the etorque.
Oh.....crap. (here I was thinking I had all the answers :sneaky:)
I had a 2004 Hemi Durango that would shudder sometimes, same with my old F250...in both cases turned out to be either the spark plugs, plug coils, or plug wires. Maybe bad batch of one those..?

They have already replaced my driveshaft due to "rust" making it bind up. This fixed it for about 9k miles but it is back and getting worse. This makes it seem that it is something with the driveshaft. Sone owners on here are reporting that greasing the crap out of the driveshaft fixes it, at least for awhile. FCA should really work on a fix for this.
