No joy from my visit to the dealership. They added 3/4 quart of fluid and checked for TSB's, but "couldn't replicate the problem". Got my truck back yesterday after a week in the shop for the subject problem, the brake pedal V07 recall, a get-ready issue, and a couple of suspension-related problems. Today my truck slammed from P into D again after I backed into a spot. Doesn't matter whether I Reverse into a spot or Drive into a spot, nor does it matter whether the truck is hot or cold. I will open another case with FCA if/when it happens again and make another appointment with the dealership.

Hi BigHorn-SV.
We're sorry to hear that your dealer could not replicate this. We suggest trying to safely record a video of this occurrence if you believe it will happen again. Also, please send us a private message and we will gladly have this documented and provide you with additional assistance to have this addressed.

Mine happens like D isn’t engaging. If you blip the gas it bangs into gear kind a like a neutral drop. Not good for the trans. On another note since RamCares seems to want to be involved please post your build date. This may isolate the problem to a specific run of trucks. Mine is 11/18.

Apparently I spoke too soon, happened 4 more times over the past 2 days. Anyone have that TSB # available?

TSB for the Transmission Control Module.
TSB 21-002-19. Date new TSB released Jan 9th 2019.
This is the update I had done. It's not listed online. @96Dodge4x4 @I Love Grits

I Have 4000 miles now , P to D issues haven't happened since they performed this update. I did not have a VB or trans replacement. Just this update. My dealer had no clue about this TSB, but after my case mgr told me the tsb#, I told them and they brought it right up and applied it. Its Worth a shot

Mine is currently at the dealer as well although I believe it to be the transmission valve body like another member mentioned in this thread. I also took a video as well to show the service manager and printed out parts of this thread.

Thanks. I won't let them touch my transmission without trying the TSB first.

Lydia, thank you for your concern and offer of support. During a 1,500 mile road trip last weekend, this occurrence happened twice since my dealership visit earlier in the week to unsuccessfully try and diagnose/fix this problem. Yesterday I did get in touch with FCA and do have a new Case number along with another appointment at my dealership to diagnose this problem next week. I have no way of videoing this problem, nor should I have to do it. Is the customer's word not enough? I believe RAM truck owner's have better things to do than contrive a problem scenario as an excuse to visit their dealership. This is a real problem, it happens randomly for no apparent reason, it causes undue wear on other elements of the vehicle's driveline (e.g., u-joints, transfer case, rear axle, etc.), it is a public safety issue, and it needs to be fixed sooner than later.

Thanks. I saw the post a bit earlier and had the dealer apply the update last Friday. Haven’t had a single occurrence of it since!

FCA just called me to let me know they've closed my case and I'm getting a new tranny.

Add me to the list as well. Just bought a 2019 Laramie 2WD and it happened the same night I drove it off the lot with less than 30 miles on the odometer. That was Friday. Called the dealership on Saturday and the salesman that sold me the car told me he'd take car of everything on Monday and rushed me off the phone. I tried calling the manager, who was there, twice and left messages but got no callback. Really upsetting to go through this.

How did you open a case? What website did you go to?

I joined the "club" last week with my Limited, 800 miles on the odometer. Send Ramcares on this forum a priviate message and they'll walk you through the process.

Update to my shifter knob issues. During the first 300 miles of ownership my truck failed to shift into Drive 3 or 4 times. I took the truck to the dealer and they could not replicate the issue. The service department reset the TCM and told me to drive it and have the tranny relearn my habits. It failed to shift into Drive the next day.

It hasn’t happened again since January. I currently have approx 3000 miles on the clock. So, maybe the reset and relearning fixed the issue or the transmission is "breaking in".

I do notice that when the tranny is cold, below 30 degrees F, the 1st to 2nd to 3rd shifts are sloppy. Once it’s warmed up a little it shifts better. My 2013 Ram with the same engine and transmission never had any issues.

I will continue to post any relavent info.

If it helps for newer people to hear this. I had it happen 1 time @ < 75 miles the day after I picked up the truck. Never since. In this thread it seems like a lot of folks had it happen at very low mileage. I'm at nearly 5K miles now and I still try to put it into drive first all the time even when I have to back out of a spot. I want to tempt the problem out if I can but it isn't happening. There is something to the transmission learning thing I think but in some cases its more. Obviously I have no idea why. I'm just putting my example out there.

UPDATE: Traded off my 5th Gen Ram with the shifter issues. It acted up after the tranny was replaced and i wasn't about to go through all that again with local dealer. FCA would NOT reimburse me the loss i incurred in my trade, $3900. So be it.

I now have a primary ride, 2014 Range Rover Sport that is a beast. My second ride is a new 2019 RAM Classic Standard Cab with NO tranny issues. V6 RWD and nice blackout package with the Tradesman line. I'm pleased now. Finally. Will say the ride in this lighter and shorter wheelbase vehicle is a pretty darn rough. May consider some softer springs to help with this. Any ideas, please advise.
