Rough Downshifting Coming to a Stop

I’m having a similar issue. Especially now that it’s getting “cooler” here in Texas.
It’s a rough 2-1 downshift where she lunges forward and revs up a bit, like a heel/toe downshift and usually the first time it happens when the trans temp is still cold it will engage the AutoPark where I have to shift it into P then D. Quite annoying really. Going to bring it up to my service advisor at the dealership as she’s due for an oil change.
No E-Torque. 5.7. 17K miles.

I had a f150 that did this as well. Took the shop foreman out for a ride, he had me put the car in neutral at about 30mph and then brake normally to zero. It still bumped right when expected which he then diagnosed as the torque converter rather than the downshift. May be worth a try...

Hi CodeTHR33,

Sorry to hear of the trouble you are experiencing with your truck! I have gone ahead and attached the TSB in reference here. To ensure this TSB applies, we would like to get you back into the dealer to have a qualified technician review the details of the TSB and specifics of your vehicle. Once reviewed, the technician can then perform the repair procedure that best matches the symptoms and diagnosis of your vehicle.

If you’d like an additional layer of assistance as you work with your dealer, please do not hesitate to send us a PM. We’d be happy to help.

Hi,
I recently bought a 2019 ram crew cab limited (Bought on Sept 2019) and it seems that I'm experiencing kind of the same, it seems that every time going to a soft stop or red light ( between 25-18 mph) I can feel this like a jerk when down shifting between 2-1 gear, it is kind of annoying. If I take this same bulletin to my RAM dealer will they take of it?

@RamCares, I'm experiencing the same kind of issue with my 2019 Ram crew cab limited (bought it on Sept 2019), it happens when approaching to a soft stop or red light, I can feel this jerk when downshifting (between 18-25MPH) it seems like between 2-1 gear. Can I use the same TSB (print it out) and take it to my RAM dealer for them to check it out?

Can RAM just initiate a recall for this bump between 2nd/1st gear, way too many folks having this same issue...including mine. I'm hearing changing out the driveshaft takes care of the issue. Anybody else hearing this?

No, to be honest it's the smoothest shifting truck I've ever owned, my last truck was an 2015 F150 which was super smooth as well. But it's a good thing they figured out the issue for the owners that have them. I've checked with my buddy who owns a 2020 Big Horn Crewcab 4x4 with 5.7L no ETorque w/ 3.92, he said no issues as well.

If a new driveshaft fixes it, then I'm assuming is based on certain batches of drive shafts?

I will eventually take mine in to have it looked at. It shifts fine, up and down ... But that sloppiness / shutter / jolt when letting off the brake at a stop light is annoying. It started doing it at a few thousand miles, more pronounced now at 12K miles. Or at least it feels more pronounced when passengers notice it too ;-)

I've complained as least 3 times to 3 different dealers and they all say they've performed software updates. Still shifts and drives like crap in first and second gear. I don't think they'll ever fix it, nor do I think they even care.

Hey RamCares, since so many of us have this hard shift issue when coming to stop, then letting off brake. Why not help us get a recall started....if Ram...Cares so much?

For a company wide recall, the issue will need to be a safety issue, not sure if that's the case here, though I can see how it will be a big frustration and big dent on the quality feel of the vehicle. I know if I had the issue, I would be absolutely livid it they couldn't fix it right away.

The ZF-8 speed which is what the RAM is using is World renowned, especially the spec the RAM 5.7L is equipped with (8HP75), which is also used on various current generation BMW M models, most current Aston Martin and Alfa Romeos. Hopefully it's just a program glitch that can be fixed right away with a dealer visit. If not, I would be considering something more serious with RAM cares.

I’ve had a slight hard downshift from 2nd to 1st since new. I’m currently at about 1,300 miles. It’s definitely tolerable and really not too bad compared to my previous 2017 Charger which shifted horribly. What I find weird is that if I come to a hard complete stop it doesn’t do it at all. But if I creep to a stop, it does it everytime.

Just an update on mine, I now have 30K miles as of this morning and it still does it. I literally just put it in 8th gear all the time, which helps aleviate the issue, however, when I brought it up to my advisor, they didn't really care, I even told him about which TSB, nada. I even had to ask him to please make a note on my file so that they can be aware.

When the transmission is at full operating temp, it goes away.

Hi Evoking1230,

I'm sorry to hear this update. If you plan to continue addressing this with your dealer or you perhaps would be willing to obtain a second opinion, we would like to escalate your situation to a Case Manager which will provide the dealership and yourself with an individual who will review your concern, then assist you and the dealership in exhausting all available resources to have the concern addressed and resolved. We are just a PM away to get the process started.
