Retrofitting the 33 gallon tank

This isn't my write up. I don't remember who provided this, but these are the directions I used to create my third strap setup. I ultimately did mine slightly different, but this is a good base.

Below is a sketch of a bracket idea. The last pic provided is the bracket I talk about in the sketch, it's a reinforcement bracket that was for older 4th Gen RAM's but I used it because it gives the slot needed to hold that 3rd strap, it's not my picture just one I found. But mine did come all painted black.

Now when I did mine I did it slightly different then the sketch, mainly because I didn't have time to go round up 1/2" thick flat steel. So mine I used a 5/16" thick bar but then used a 1" angle iron placed on its face and welded it to work as a strong back. If you choose to do something like that make sure you don't make the strong back the full length as you only have a little over 1/2" of clearance between the top of the frame and body of the truck. But you will see that I ran that flat bar over the top of the frame to the outer edge of the frame and then bolted it to the angle iron on the inside.

I also welded all my brackets to the truck including the bracket from Mopar since I already had the welder out. However the nice thing with the bracket is it does come with threaded inserts so you don't have to drill through the entire frame for it, just the inside frame and place the inserts, all bolts are included as well for the bracket. I recommend placing the flat bar/angle iron first and then you will want to put the Mopar bracket as far up close to the angle iron as possible so that you won't end up with it being too low and the tank strap not cinching up tight.

Since I welded mine I don't have bolt sizes, but you get the idea from the sketch, but you will need to measure the frame width for bolt length, and depending on what thickness angle iron/flat bar you use will need to measure for those.

There isn't much weight on that third strap as the tank is pretty small up there but this will give that support needed. Also make sure to get a fairly long all-thread style bolt for the bolt that will be used to tighten the 3rd strap as you will need some length to tighten it up. I also got a small piece of rubber that I stuck to the bottom of the strap to ensure a tight fight.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions. I don't have exact lengths so I recommend you buy longer of each and then just cut them down to size. I placed the new tank in place and took measurements and then dropped it and built the bracket.

Thank you for all the links and info. What you are saying about the 4th gen T bracket is what I was thinking was my best method (if I do add it). I ordered the 4th gen bracket and the 33 gal 3rd strap for 5th gen. Install is tomorrow at the dodge dealer, thought about asking the tech if he could attach the 4th gen bracket in the correct spot with just bolting it on the frame while under there. Otherwise, I will see about my dad's friend welding it on. I'm guessing the correct placement won't line up with the existing bolt that is coming out of the underbelly? I assume this is why you have to add the bar above in order to attach it to something? The whole floating (only one end attached) of the bar to attach the 3rd strap seems like it wouldn't be very stable. Am I understanding that you used a bar that went from one side of the frame to the other? I assume this didn't get anywhere near the driveshaft. Happen to have any pics you can share of your install so I can see it a little better and the exact placement needed?

Thanks!

Sorry, I don't have any pictures and if I were to try the tank is in the way anyway. I put the tank in place and lined up where to install the 4th gen bracket - the placement for that bracket is actually pretty forgiving. The reason you want to weld is because as you describe it won't be a very solid mount otherwise. The bar on the top of the tank does not go from side to side - just from the driver's side. It is actually more stable than you would think - again because it really doesn't have to hold very much weight. It really is adding rigidity more than anything - not that it even needs to add rigidity. I discovered the cross member for the skid plate after I installed the tank. Otherwise, I might have just used it to brace the front of the tank - it definitely would be the strongest method available. You are also correct, the existing bolt does not line up which is why the above bar is used. I did want a factory finish and the 4th gen bracket definitely gives that.

Since you say bolting on isn't as sturdy, but yet it doesn't need too much support for the tank, do you think if the tech is willing to install the bracket in the proper spot at the time of install today that I should go ahead and have him do it?

I could then decide if I want to mess with having my dad's friend fabricate the rest and could even go ahead and weld around the bracket then if needed?

I think it would be worth having the tech install the bracket. It gives you future options. The top bar is installed separately and is where you need it mounted solid to support anything.
When the tech installs the 4th gen bracket - it comes with (going from memory) 4 nuts that you drill a hole in the frame and pound the nuts into the holes. Then you bolt the bracket onto the nuts. FYI: I can tell you from experience it is a little tricky and easy to drill too big of a hole - you may need to weld that bracket even after it is installed by the tech to ensure a solid mount of the bracket.

Well, got the truck back from the dealership today. I really wish I would have just done it myself, but don't have a lift and my husband really didn't want to mess with it. The first tank I got had one of the knobs to attach the heat shield broken off, had to wait two days for a replacement tank to show up. They finished the install today and when I showed up the mechanic told me he didn't use three of the hoses. He said that two of them were too long, but I am pretty sure he must have not done something correctly. He said everything is good and he made the original hoses work. Also mentioned some other tube "up front" needed to have been replaced but it wasn't???? I even gave them the step by step instructions from here to try and simplify the entire process and speed them up, pretty sure he never really read it. They also didn't install the reinforce bracket, it looks like it would be too difficult to really attach now with the tank and tubes around there.

I only filled it with 17 gallons to test. I was able to change the tank programming via alfaobd once I got home. Seems to have worked properly. The mechanic said he couldn't get anyone to answer at Chrysler to change it.

Fingers crossed all is well. Now to figure out if I need to mess with the third strap or just say it's good and pray nothing messes up.

That really sucks. As long as there are no leaks and it fills properly (doesn't stop accepting fuel before full) you should be fine. But the job is very straightforward and should not have extra hoses (nor should you have to MAKE the original hoses work). I am not surprised though - all the more reason I am glad I did the job myself. Also, I really think you will be fine without the third strap.

Thank you. I'm kicking myself for not filling it up when I left. I only put in 17 gallons because I was unsure about the third strap not being there and if there would be too much fuel in it if I was to have someone try and to the third strap. I need to go today and make sure that it will fill up all the way. What do you typically get in it when filling? Like 30 gallons if really empty?

I think the most I've put in is 30 gallons and that was getting close to E but not quite there yet.

Went to the station yesterday and was down to about a 1/4 of a tank and put in 20 gallons. Thinking that should have been fairly correct to full at 33 gallons. Probably should have tried to get it close to E to really test, but was an hour from home and at the cheapest gas station.

Wanted to thank all the folks who put the details in this thread, goes back almost 4 years now. I just started removing my tank, I did it early before I got all parts as I knew something would break.
I was right I massacred this one pipe, I could not get the thing off from the gas tank, only a 50 dollar mistake so not bad, and typical with all the lines i needed this wasnt one of them
hope all goes well as I now have a 5000Lb brick in my garage :)IMG_0057.jpg

Update:
So thanks to Rammit, he sent me over the parts he used to swap his Truck to the 33 gallon tank, as I was saving the parts off the mopar store a few parts are saying they don't fit. Specifically the Fuel Line Bundle (52030443AB) and the Vapor tube (68307831AB).
So I did a little more digging and I think I found all the parts for the 2022 model years,
52029908AB-Purge Hose
68408875AF-Fuel Tank
52029909AC-Fliter to Canister Hose
52029888AD-Vapor Canister
I think these cover everything for the fuel system itself. If it doesn't please add the missing parts. I'm hopefully going to get this project started in the summer, just to make sure I have everything in order before I start tossing money around without having a solid answer of what will fit and what won't. If you have recommendations of what else I could do that would also be awesome.

Hi, I ran into a problem if someone can help me solve. I removed the fuel line bundle on the 26 gallon from my 2022 ram rebel 1500 and it is completely different from the fuel line bundle on a 33 gallon ( 52030443AB ). On the 26 gallon the fuel line bundle has a connector to the wire harness compared to the one the 33 gallon, it doesn't.
The part number for the fuel line bundle off the 26 gallon is 7434237aa but I can't even find it on any site. Can anyone source out this newer fuel line bundle for a 33 gallon?

The fuel line bundle is 52030443AC , I haven't received yet but that's what I was told, as you can see by mic pic the 22 gallon has no such electric part, in fact yours is the first one i have seen with it, is your diesel?

Ok what did I do wrong? I did the swap. When I attempt to pour fuel from my jug into the tank it immediately flowed out of my tank all over my paint. Obviously I cleaned the area asap.

Stuck my finger into the tank and fuel is just sitting at the top. Absolutely no fuel in the tank what so ever. It's dark now so I have take it apart again tomorrow.

What am I missing?

What funnel did you use? Is the neck long enough to open the secondary "door/flap"

Yea sounds like you didn't use the funnel under the passenger seat. Newer vehicles use a 2 "door" setup in the fill neck.

Did you use the fnnel from under the passenger seat?

I contacted the dealer that I bought my truck from and asked about putting the 33 gallon tank on. They are unable to do that. Now, I'm waiting on a reply from a dealer close to home.
