Retrofitting the 33 gallon tank

The vapor canisters of the 26 and 33 gallon are identical in size and shape…however who knows what is in the inside…. They do have different part numbers however… attachment for the fittings/hoses etc is identical……might or might not throw an error code if you use the wrong canister with the wrong tank… but easy enough to get too and replace if needed…..

My 33 gallon vapor canister was slightly bigger and has a slightly different shape in some places compared to my 26

Just out of curiosity but what’s the difference in the 23 gallon fuel pump and 33 gallon tank fuel pump?

Where have you all found the best place to order parts from? I have been researching but they all seem to want $300 to $400 to ship to Oklahoma!

I just bought my tank at the local dealer….shipping kills any discount at the online places… bought all the rest of the parts online tho… still saved money that way…..I think I payed list at the dealer, something like $289 plus tax……at the time…

Thank you. I was thinking this might be the best way to go. The local dealer's service dept is stupid though and keep telling me it isn't possible to do it. Did you have your dealership install? If so, do you recall how many hours labor they charged for?

I very much doubt that a dealer will do the install….Ram changed the frames to be fuel tank size specific…the large tank has an extra hanger as part of the frame. some of the early trucks had that spare hanger installed, but my 21 did not….That hanger is not available, has no part number…. So you have to make your own… no dealer is going to accept the responsibility/liability for fabricating a hanger and welding it to the frame….that holds up a fuel tank.
So I bought all the parts, see list in this thread, fabricated a bracket and welded/installed the whole thing…. It is all plug and play…..other then the bracket….I am a slow worker, took me the better part of a day, but this included making the bracket..used AlfaOBD to program fuel quantity/range… worked like a charm… nice to have a 700 mile range….

Hello can anyone with a 26g tank confirm that the filter canister is reusable one the 33g?

Several have alleded to the possibility but I don't belive a definitive answer has been give.

Thank you in advance!

Priced mine out at Mopar parts.com

Side note the shipping is +$300 if you order everything together!

If you order the tank separately it will ship for $75 and the rest of parts shipped for >$25.

Wow, thank you for that! I didn't think to try the tank separate from the rest. So silly....

I don't think they are interchangeable. They are different part numbers and the 33 gallon canister is larger and overall different from the 26

which website exactly? I don't see a mopar parts dot com.....

My local Dodge dealership just told me they aren't willing to change my 26 gal to the 33 gal and said it would void the warranty. This can't be true, is it????

Find another service department or go to a independent shop. That response is a easy way of telling you that they don’t wanna bother with it.

Thanks to everyone on this thread for all the parts required, procedures, tips and pictures. This was a much easier job than I expected due to all of the posts. I don't think much can be said that hasn't already been said but I did want to clarify the parts required as there were some discrepancies as I was creating my parts list. Most recently there has been a few posts for the exact parts list needed for the 23 gallon swap but not for the 26 gallon swap. So I am listing below the exact parts I used for my 26 gallon swap.

Part NumberDescriptionComments
68408875AF33 gallon fuel tank
52030458ABstrap (front strap for 33) - fuel tank
06104717AAnut flange hexNeed this for the front mounting strap
68307831AB
57008595AA
tube - vapor (for 33 gallon tank)68307831AB is for a 2019-20 3.6L V6 and 2019 5.7L (34 1/2" long). Although this fit, it was too long for my 2020 5.7L and seemed too tight.
57008595AA is for a 2020-21 5.7L (31 1/2" long). This fit perfectly for my 2020 5.7L Crew Cab.
52029908ABhose - purge
52030443ABbundle - fuel line
52029888ACcanister - vaporPossibly optional as I believe some people have reused their canister from the 26 gallon tank
52029909AChose - filter to CanisterProbably not needed, can reuse existing hose (although the 33 gallon tank hose is slightly different)
52029964ADskid plate 33 gallon (73" long)Optional - If you don't have the skid plate currently you also need a hanger (68303523AB) and bolts/nuts to mount it
68418923ACReinforce fuel strap - (for DS body)Optional - only if you do not have the 3rd hanger and want to use this for the 3rd strap

Two parts I did not need were 68312139AB (hose - vent) and 68312140AC (hose - fuel return). These were listed very early in this thread for the 26 gallon swap but are not necessary. Nobody ever clearly stated that they were actually not required although those that have swapped out the 23 for the 33 never listed these as required.

Can anyone describe how to use the Reinforce Fuel Strap instead of (or in addition?) to the 3rd mounting strap? My 2020 1500 has the 26 gallon tank. I can't tell that it has the mounting bracket for the 3rd strap. There is a bolt end sticking out from the underside in the vicinity that I would think the strap would be installed?

That's like saying that if you put bigger tires on that it will void the warranty🤣😂🤣😅
actually, the guy said if a truck had chrome wheels stock and they changed them to something else it would void the warranty. I just knew that had to be bull crap.

Should of called him out. Gotta love a clueless service advisor that just screams voids warranty for anything that is stock. I bet if you walk that lot you’ll see plenty of vehicles that aren’t 100% stock yet still retain a warranty..
