I wanted to pass on my recent experience with my MX+ which I have set up per the gauges in the pic below. I was driving my wife to Walmart here in town when I noticed the white “Normal Regen” state gauge in the pick below swing from 0 to 1 (left to right) which told me it was attempting to do a regen.

I explained to my wife we were hitting the interstate so I could see if all gauges were working ok and she agreed to go for a drive. I was amazed to see it stayed in regen as we were doing 40 to the interstate for about three miles. Then, as soon as we hit 70 mph on the highway, the top right EGT gauge in the pick below shot up to 1000 degrees. It wavered between 970 and 1080 degrees, and eventually started dropping once regen was complete as evidenced by the white gauge swinging back over to 0.

I’m relating this for anyone seeking an inexpensive way to monitor regens and EGT before shutting down. It works on an iPhone flawlessly.

(I don’t own stock or derive any monetary benefit from recommending this product…am just a very satisfied frugal customer).

I’ve ordered my MX+ and just waiting for it to come in. Can’t wait to hook it up.

What amazes me is these PIDs are identified in the OBDLink app you’ll download to your iPhone.

It raises the question why Ram wouldn’t simply install a red light (or any light) in the instrument cluster to let the driver know a regen is imminent and at the same time that light would go out once the regen is complete. Simple, cheap and effective. Next year it will most likely be an option for $4000! 😉

Very cool. Can you tell me if you lose your BT connectivity to your truck when you hook this up? Will your phone still work with Carplay if you have it connected via cable?

Thanks

I have the 8.4 UConnect radio so I can’t comment on the larger system some of you have in your Rams but for me BT works simultaneously with UConnect and OBDLink MX+. For example, today my wife called as I was driving down the freeway. My iPhone was displaying the gauges for my MX+ but when she called it switched over to show the call in progress. Once I hung up the call, it automatically switched back to the MX+ gauge screen and kept on monitoring.

As for CarPlay working with it, I’ve never tried it that way as I don’t use CarPlay that much given I have Connect Nav. I’ll have to give it a try and will report back.

What impressed me what how patient they Ram system was waiting for me to get up to highway speed/temp so the regen could start.

It wasn’t a now or nothing situation as much as a “well, I’m waiting to regen as soon as you get me up to speed…I’ll wait patiently for you to do that.” I don’t know how long that condition lasts but it was at least five to eight minutes before I got to the highway.

Iphones need wifi which is what the MX+ provides. they won't do bluetooth to data devices, because apple stuff.

I may be misunderstanding what you’re explaining. I have to use BT for my MX+. Wifi doesn’t have anything to do with it. One of my devices under Bluetooth My Devices is OBDLink MX+. It has to say “Connected” or the iPhone can’t display anything from the Mx+.

I have the 12” screen. I use CarPlay and have no issues. Phone is mounted in a proclip phone mount, plugged in, still get calls, messages, navigate with Waze and generally have no issues.

as for the Wi-Fi, my understanding (which may be flawed) is that the phone pairs with the device via Bluetooth, and the app then establishes a private Wi-Fi connection to the device for the data transmission. I’m not sure this is correct.

Finally got my MX+ in the mail. Had a question. After setting it all up i can hear like a thumping noise coming from the dash area when I plugged it in. And when I popped the hood I can hear a noise near the battery area. Is this normal when it’s plugged in?

No, there is no noise associated with the MX+.

This is what I’m talking about. I never noticed this until after I plugged in the Mx+. It’s like a clicking noise after turning off the truck when it’s running. But when I keep it in run the noise isn’t there. Just when I actually start the truck.

If it started after you plugged in the MX+ and goes away when you unplug it, I’d check to see under the knee bolster panel to see if you have a GPS tracking device jumpered into the OBD port. Mine has never made that sound. If nothing there, then I’d call OBDLink as it is always possible you received a faulty MX+ unit. I haven’t heard of this but it is always possible.

Does obdlinkmx+ come with its own app? If not, what’s the best app to run with it? Doesn’t matter Apple or Android, going to have a dedicated device as ‘gauge cluster’

Yes, it comes with its own app known an OBDLink which you can download. And then when you input the year/make/model/engine it will download additional software to cover the Ecodiesel PIDs. I sit my iPhone in the pen holder on top of the dash…I have it laying on its side so the display is in landscape. It puts the iPhone display in line with the road so you don’t have to look down if using the typical phone holder in the console.

Did you download OBDLink and input your trucks info? Did you then go into Dashboards while connected and set up your gauges? You need to pick your PIDs.

See sequential pics below.

1. Download OBDLink App.
2. Plug MX+ into OBD outlet and sync up your iPhone Bluetooth with the MX+.
3. Click on the little car icon in bottom left corner and enter ALL data for your Ecodiesel.
4. Once done, it should ask if you want to download specific data from the OBDLink site to your iPhone so it can read Ecodiesel specific PIDs…do it.
5. After this is done, go to Displays and start choosing your displays…follow the pics provided below as a step by step guide as they are sequential. Repeat for as many different gauges as you want.

NOTE: PIDs for Ecodiesels are under the “Engine Control Module (Diesel)” as seen in pic #7

Continued

The last two pics show how to delete a gauge. Just press and hold done on the gauge you wish to delete and then you can delete it, change gauge type, or any other changes to that gauge.

Let me know if you need more help.

Hooked up mine last night. My soot mass was at 57% 😱. Took it out for a small drive and dropped to 52%. Haven’t gone on a long drive in over 2 weeks.
