Normal engine temperatures?

Hello,

This is my first post on 5th gen rams forum. I have a question about the normal operating temperatures for the 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi Lone Star. I’m seeing the following temperatures while on the freeway at speeds of 70-75MPH, ambient temperatures are 90-100F.

coolant temperature: 204F(min)-217F(max)
Transmission temperature: 179F(min)-188F(max)
Oil temperature: 210F(min)-225F(max)
Oil pressure: 50-52 PSI

do these temperatures sound normal for highway driving in the summer? What temps do y’all see with your trucks?

Those sound reasonable. Mine are pretty much the same as what you reported with similar ambient temps.

I don't think mine's ever gone over 215 on the coolant.

Those numbers look right to me. Typically coolant is over 205, trans is about 20 degrees cooler, and oil is about 20 hotter. Oil pressure on the highway is 51 or 52.

To lazy to do all the conversions from celsius to fahrenheight, this is what I see (hot summer day at 33 degrees, on highway, either pulling a 2000 pound load or empty):
- coolant: 96 - 98 (idling at drive through it goes up to 108 then fan comes on and brings it down to 102)
- trans: 78 - 80
- oil: 106
- pressure: 3.6/3.8 bars

Those are all very, very close to what I see in normal driving, even with lower ambient temperatures. I have seen 57-59 PSI oil pressure at winter temperatures.

I've got 6900 pounds of tractor and trailer and the highest coolant temp I saw in hilly country was coolant 223F, oil temp at 233, and transmission temp at 192. This was on a two-hour, 125 mile drive at 65 MPH.

That's indeed normal unladen/unstressed ranges. If you try towing, especially a heavy item and up an incline on the highway, expect much higher coolant and oil temps, which are also normal under those conditions. I'm talking about close to 240F coolant and 270F oil under extreme conditions. However, normal under light constant speed about 210F coolant / 205F oil, maybe 215-220F coolant / 225F oil in stop and go traffic.

Those sound reasonable. Mine are pretty much the same as what you reported with similar ambient temps.

I have the same vehicle however mines a 2019. my coolant temperature usually is 203 to 210. Transmission at 174. In oil temperature gets to 222. I live in South Florida so the weather is definitely hot. When I’m pulling my boat, the temperatures stay the same except for the coolant temperature. That will climb to about 215 in stop and go. But went on the highway it runs as if I’m not even pulling a boat meaning the same temperatures as I mentioned above.

I'm about the same with only 1 difference. Sometimes I'll get to 195-200 transmission temp while towing.

Towing the 25’ Airstream, up long hills, often 5-6% grades, I’ll see the oil temp hit 250 easily. Up at North Cascades National Park, it touched 260. I thought that miles long steep climb old never end. I shut the A/C off when the coolant hits 230, and it usually goes back down.

the transmission rarely goes over 205, at least with the A/C off.

This truck has the 3.92 gears.
