Yup, the People's Republik added a registration hook for the DEF update. Socialism at its finest.

I got mine in the mail.

Any reports of what this does to DEF usage?

I suppose a new vehicle from the factory will come with the latest and greatest worst EPA-mandated fixes ? I have a Rebel EcoD on order, not yet built, presuming it'll get the same software as is being foisted on you guys who already have your trucks ? I guess I won't know what I'm missing since I won't have a baseline to compare against, apart from reading your experiences here.

I won’t know how much the def consumption increases until mid May when I do my trip up north. It’s close to 4000km total with 1500km of it towing a heavy enclosed trailer. So far I haven’t put on enough miles to notice a difference.

So....

With AlfaOBD, I wonder if there's a way to grab an image of the system and then, if your truck gets flashed with the update at a dealership, re-flash it to a known, good, state?

Of course, I wouldn't do that on purpose. I'm just wondering so I don't do it by accident.

:)

worst part is they took the money for my tags but are holding the tags until i get correction form, that a dealer can't send electronically, so after i get the update done, I have to physically take the form to the DMV so they can release the tags....

I just had the recall work done (also in California) but I did not get the form mentioned above (I just have it stated on the service order that the emissions recall work was done). But I did get the same FCA recall notice in the mail. I have a Porsche Cayenne diesel and had similar work done a year ago. I needed to verify with CA DMV when I got it registered in state that the work was actually done. Porsche was very careful to make sure I had all the documentation. I'll check back with my Ram dealer and try to find out why I didn't get the form once the work was done.

As to the work, it was just a 30 min software update to the DEF system - pretty simple. Not sure if it will use more or less DEF per mile now. I have to say the RAM eco-diesel 3.0L prior to recall seems to use quite a bit more DEF per mile than my Cayenne 3.0L diesel though. Almost twice as much!

Just received mine in the mail also. Have not had to dealer since new in Feb 21 and have no plans to take to dealer in future unless something major happens.
My notice came a few days ago, too. Told me to call the local dealer for an appointment. Estimated repair time 30 minutes. Love the RAM but don't trust the dealer. They've managed to inflict light but inconvenient mischief on each of my two previous oil change visits. Won't be going back until summer for another oil change - use the dealer to avoid the possibility of warranty coverage hassles should something go wonky. If they choose to fix it then, so be it. If they don't have the parts, I'll be in no hurry to go back when they come in. Current DEF usage varies a bit, averaging about 7K miles a tankful. It has 14K miles in two years, less than anticipated when I ordered the truck circa Christmas 2019.

Took mine in Wednesday. It was already done. I added factory bed lights last month and took it in to have them programmed. Apparently when they updated the computer then it automatically did the recall

I got my recall letter in. Haven't done it yet and my California registration is due. I said screw the recall for now and the DMV still renew my registration. This recall better not nerf my trucks power.

if anything my truck is more responsive with the latest ecm update. Haven’t done enough miles to measure def usage yet, fuel mileage hasn’t changed either.

I’ll probably jinx myself posting this, but I also haven’t had the unresponsive throttle pedal since the update I used to get randomly when accelerating from a stop.

Not yet for me. I topped off the DEF tank and am still trying to get enough miles post update to make a meaningful comparison. But based on my eyeball of the DEF gauge, I would guesstimate DEF consumption post recall is roughly equal to DEF consumption pre recall. But a few more thousand miles and I may have a better answer.

Normally for me my DEF gauge either never moves for months or it drops suddenly after a several hour highway trip.

Put me in the I'll wait a long time before I let them touch my truck category.

My estimate is that my tank of DEF will last ~6,000 miles. That'd be from full to empty and immobilized. I like to keep it above 1/4.

I'd still pay good money to double the tank capacity, just to extend the time between filling.

Based on my driving habits, ~65% highway and ~35% city, I get around 7,000 miles to the DEF tank. I once took the DEF level to "refill soon" but had no issues starting. Since the Y81 update, I'll keep an eye on DEF usage and report in a few months.
Since the Y81 update, I got exactly 1,000 miles to 1/8 tank of DEF. It seems to be burning the same amount of DEF before and after the Y81 update.

Having been a victim of the last Emissions recall, I'm waiting as long as I can. I hope to see feedback from early adopters here ;)
Smart move to wait!

I live in Nevada, got the Y81 notice last month and had it done. Pretty soon, my dashboard resembled a Christmas tree with all of the lights. Check engine, electronic throttle, etc. But still drove fine. THen, it went into "limp mode". Restarted and back to normal operation, in to the dealer who had it a day and "fixed". Not. Driving down the highway at 709 MPH and sudden limp mode, lucky to avoid traffic. Back to the dealer now for over a week, a FCA "Star Case". Dealer advises no findings with their extensive diagnostics, now getting inspection suggestions from FCA to try find the problem.

FCA doesn't give a hoot about all of the trouble. I have a POS loaner to replace my USD $80K RAM. FCA says if I want something more, they will "goodwill" up to $40 per day for a rental. Ha, just try rent ANYTHING for that price. Not happening.

The dealer advises they also have a Gladiator Eco Diesel with the exact same situation, did the recall, now many lights and limp mode.
