Metallic rattle with moderate throttle

Thanks for all of the info. I'll continue to drive my truck hard and hopefully with a few more miles and colder temps Ill be able to get this sorted out. All of my service has been done at the dealership so I am good to go there.
Did they ever resolve the issue? I have the same pinging noise on my 2020 Ram. I can always duplicate the sound when I put the truck in manual shift mode. In gears 3-7 between 2800 and 3500 rpms will rattle like crazy. Its definitely not MDS because in manual shift mode MDS is deactivated.

I think I have the same sound happening, not so much a metallic rattle, but like a clicking/ticking sound when I give it at least half throttle. Took it to the dealership today and asked a service guy to ride with me so I can specifically point it out. It’s nearly impossible to hear on the truck, but immediately he said yup I hear it 100%. He said he’s almost positive it’s a lifter and obviously it’s covered under warranty. But he said before they do all that work that I should try running 91 gas just to see if that fixes it. He said he kinda doubts it but it could be pinging from running 87 fuel. So I’m gonna give it a try this weekend and if it doesn’t go away he said to bring it back and they’ll give me a rental car and fix whatever it is. Based on first impressions, Jack Powell Ram in Escondido Ca seems very friendly and eager to help. Hopefully that keeps up because my experience with other Ram dealerships were horrible lol

My dealer pulled the old "could not duplicate" scheme.

that sucks :/ I was 100% sure that the dealer wouldn’t be able to hear mine if I didn’t point it out so I just straight up told them look I don’t want to waste your time or mine, if I can steal one of your guys just for 2 minutes I can show them exactly what I’m hearing and thankfully they said yes and a service tech hopped in and surprisingly noticed the sound.

Sorry to hear this, @BrandonT504. Our team is a private message away and happy to get you connected with a specialist who can work alongside you and your dealer while your truck is in service if it would be of interest.

Glad to hear it sounds like you are in good hands with your dealer, @Mclovinnnnn! Please do not hesitate to send us a private message if you are in need of any additional support during that process.
My dealer pulled the old "could not duplicate" scheme.
I'm sorry that this was your experience, @Billy James. If you are willing to try and address this any further with a different local dealer, we are more than willing to escalate a case on your behalf for further support through that process.

Thank you very much. I wish I would have known about you guys when I was dealing with a NIGHTMARE at the dealership that cost $4500 out of pocket and dinged my credit. Dealerships and corporate basically told me to F off even though the credit was 100% the dealers fault, and the whole front suspension of the truck broke the very first time I took it on my brothers dirt driveway going less than 1mph.

You're welcome! In the future, we are only ever a private message away.

Whoa. That’s the best ram dealership interaction I have ever heard about. The one in Turlock, CA is absolute garbage. Took it in four times for the same issue and they never fixed anything. Still same ping.

Yeah dude I got lucky. I have a coworker who actually says this dealership sucks lol but they were good to me and thankfully running 91 fixed my truck. 87 and 89 both had pinging but 91 is good.

Im going to order a new 2021 while i only have 17K miles on it to get better money for my trade. The only question is do I go with the 3.55 instead of the 3.92 since we now have a new option. I think that will be perfect with 35's and I can get a tad bit better gas mileage.

Hey All,
Just got into a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 3.21 and started to notice a metallic rattle like sound when I am under a moderate engine load but prior to the engine shifting. It seems to be coming from the mid/rear of the truck and I notice it more in gears 4-7. I tried to capture it on video but road noise made it hard to hear - I'll try again when I'm on a newer road. The repetition of the sound when happening is consistent (if that makes sense) so I'm not sure if it's exhaust rattle or from the driveline (or just the normal sound of the driveline). May be in my head but I notice it more when mds is on as compared to if I lock it out. Dealer said to bring it in when I hit 3k miles (about 1500mi on it now) - things are still breaking in until then which seems like an interesting follow up to "these things are definitely worth 60k" they were telling me two weeks ago when I bought. Also said they would not turn off MDS as it controls timing which also seems inconsistent compared to what I've read in other threads. Not the biggest issue but does kind of kill the sound of an otherwise great sounding truck. Thanks in advance!
I have the same issue, rattling sound while accelerating. I have 40k on my truck and it has done it since a bought it. Does it on all octane ratings, much louder on lower octane t.... thought it was an exhaust leak.. dealership said it is normal, however didn't have this issue with a rental of the same truck... I love the truck, its amazing, however spending 50k+ on a vehicle that make questionable drivetrain noises is not really acceptable. Didn't have have any strange sounds from my Nissan truck till I hit 220k. Oh well guess I should go back to Nissan. I am very disappointed... truck sounds like MDS is engaged all the time.

Funny, I was just looking at new Nissan HD trucks; been thinking about doing the same.

My truck sounds like a diesel truck under low to medium throttle. Is this normal?
I hear this same exact noise. Only under light acceleration and only when the radio is low or off. I’m going to try putting higher grade fuel in, as others have mentioned, and report back

I’m looking at the new fords as soon as they are on the lots. I’d like to go back to a Chevy but the interiors suck. We’ll see otherwise I might just move up to the Cummins.

I know this thread is bit old but wanted to follow up as I just got my truck to the dealer for the exact rattle noise like what you all described. Metallic type rattle under very moderate throttle only in drive at around 12-1300 rpms. I had a few techs test drive the truck and say they couldn’t hear anything, so then the service manager drove it and did hear the noise. They figured out it was a bad alternator. I was also very perplexed as to where this noise was exactly coming from and why. I never even considered the alternator. So anyone of you guys that’s having issues with the dealership not wanting to fix it or can’t figure out what it is, have them check/replace the alternator!!!

The only thing that I don't get is why the noise stops when Im in 4x4 high or auto.
That has nothing to do with the alternator?

Do you know how they determined it was the alternator? Any other symptoms other than the metallic rattle?

UPDATE- just picked the truck up from the dealer, they completely changed their story. They replaced alternator and tensioner and noise is still there and the same. So needless to say I’m not happy. They also said there’s nothing else they will do and blamed my lift and other aftermarket stuff as the probably cause. So I’m back to a dead end. It’s clear we all have the same issue and it’s being ignored by RAM. Idk what else to do.

Im telling you the issue is in thee transfer case. They are slowly rebuilding mine and this process is slow because its under warranty and everything needs to be approved. I will post when I get my truck back.

Make sure you start a case with Ram Cares!
