Metallic rattle with moderate throttle

Mine was diagnosed as MDS noise. Normal operating condition but wildly annoying.

Did the dealer fix this issue for you? I think I'm having the same thing on mine. It just started at around 13K miles.

Taking it in on Wednesday to let them see.

Mine is even like a ping...sounds like a Metallic rattle almost.... The service department always does a really good job at my dealership so I’m hoping that they can figure out what the heck it is next week.

No I haven't had mine checked. It seems to occur more often and seems to be getting louder; so I need to bring it in soon. I am assuming its pinging. It does sound lite a rattle some I suppose. I'm thinking I either have some bad lifters or an exhaust leak.

Yeah let me know how you make out. Mine just started doing this at around 13,000 miles so maybe it is a lifter? I have a magnaflow exhaust and everything looks good underneath

Mine makes a metallic rattle too since new. Really notice it when MDS is on. From what I read, this appears to be a normal thing with these, but who knows.

93 octane cleared up the pinging sound under load but the metallic rattle sound hasn’t gone away, it’s especially bad during cold weather driving until the engine warms up, it’s for sure lifter related.

I’m hearing a couple of different sounds in the video, the rattle sound it makes when you first step on the gas after a coming to a complete stop in the first couple minutes of the video sounds like mine. Seems to go away after warmed up.

I also hear a metallic screeching sound later in the video which sounds driveline related (transmission, torque converter / flex plate / clutch engagement or the transfer case if it’s 4WD), that could be normal though. Could you take a video inside of the engine bay? Is your engine the 5.7 HEMI eTorque? There’s a lot of wind noise for me to hear everything clearly

The sound I'm concerned about is the "bell ringing at lower rpm's" It also doesn't help that I have mud tires on and a magnaflow exhaust.

That’s good news...the dealer said the noise needs to be louder in order to diagnose..I created a Ram cares case as well to document... i’m not sure if it helps or not at all but they did need to give me a new transmission on my truck at 200 miles so maybe the dealer did something wrong when they installed it. The noise just started happening about a month and a half ago. At least if it gets louder during the winter time they can’t give me a hard time looking at it.

It’s not a guarantee that’s the problem but they fail all of the time on these engines as early as 20,000 miles, and they start by making slight noises like this however the noise will have to get undeniably louder for them to acknowledge it as a problem, I’ve brought mine in 5-6 times for the issue, they always state they can’t replicate because it’s not obvious enough, even in the winter when to me it’s loud as heck. The lifters are located above the pistons in the engine block below the cylinder heads. In order to replace they have to remove the intake manifold, valve covers, rocker arms, pushrods and the cylinder heads. Also they will need to replace the camshaft which will require removal of the all of the belt driven accessories, timing cover and chain. Make sure to keep the oil changes well documented, Chrysler will request receipts for oil changes that aren’t done by them. Only use MS-6395 certified engine oils as well if you change your own, a lot of people recommended Mobil 1 which isn't certified.

On your transmission I would suggest having the dealership check the fluid level, on my Toyota Tacoma they discovered the fluid was 2quarts low from the factory!

Thanks for all of the info. I'll continue to drive my truck hard and hopefully with a few more miles and colder temps Ill be able to get this sorted out. All of my service has been done at the dealership so I am good to go there.

Hey All,
Just got into a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 3.21 and started to notice a metallic rattle like sound when I am under a moderate engine load but prior to the engine shifting. It seems to be coming from the mid/rear of the truck and I notice it more in gears 4-7. I tried to capture it on video but road noise made it hard to hear - I'll try again when I'm on a newer road. The repetition of the sound when happening is consistent (if that makes sense) so I'm not sure if it's exhaust rattle or from the driveline (or just the normal sound of the driveline). May be in my head but I notice it more when mds is on as compared to if I lock it out. Dealer said to bring it in when I hit 3k miles (about 1500mi on it now) - things are still breaking in until then which seems like an interesting follow up to "these things are definitely worth 60k" they were telling me two weeks ago when I bought. Also said they would not turn off MDS as it controls timing which also seems inconsistent compared to what I've read in other threads. Not the biggest issue but does kind of kill the sound of an otherwise great sounding truck. Thanks in advance!

I have had the same issue for a while. The dealership said it was due to lower octane fuel. I upped and only pump premium now. Ping is still there. Dealership had no resolution for me. My trucks pretty ****ing broken in now and it’s still making that pinging noise.
