Is it possible to add Blind Spot?

Hello all - A few general questions on this mod for those that have modified their existing LED lights by adding modules and wiring:
  • When you cut the plastic to open up the area for the module, what did you use as a guide for the opening size? Can the recess be cut all around at the corner without leaving a flange on the bottom? Seems like the heat sink seals on the sidewalls, so a straight through cut would be OK.
  • What gauge wire did you use to add the BSM module connector to the round Molex? Factory setup looks to be 18ga, but the connector pins for the 8-pin gray connector seem too small to accept it.
  • Is there any required rate of twist for the two CANBUS wires both at the tail light and from the x400 connector?
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
The other day I modified my tail lights to add the BSM module and can answer two of your questions:
  • When cutting the plastic on the tail light you cut the entire area out of the recess. No need to leave a flange.
  • I used 22 gauge wire for the BSM module.

Thanks. I'll most likely do the same thing. When I find a screw that works I will report back.
Just wanted to report back on what screws I ended up using to mount the BSM module to the tail light. I used a course screw with a diameter of 4.1mm and an overall length (including head) of 22.8mm.

that should work fine, they are just little black screws designed to go into the plastic, not machine screws or anything... i was lucky enuff that my sensors came with the little black screws.

those actually seem a little on the long side to me, and idk if i'd want to put a long one in since the boards are all around the edges of those holes... lemme see if i can fine a pic one the ones that came with my sensors.

Edit: i can't find pics but if you already did it and it didn't appear to be in conflict with anything, you're probly good.

Yup they worked with no issues.

I tested my tail lights lighting functions and everything works as it should.

Thanks for the info! (y)(y)

For those interested, found a direct replacement for the sensor attachment screws at Mc Master-Carr:

Also, ended up with two of the 68489300AA taillight jumper harnesses that I don't need (my 2019 already had the correct jumpers). PM if interested.

For anyone looking for the majority of the setup, I am selling my aftermarket LED tail lights (complete with BSM modules installed) and a pair of aftermarket power fold, heated door mirrors with the BSM triangle. The mirrors are plug and play, zero modifications necessary. The tail lights are plug and play for trucks that came stock with halogen tails, no extra harnesses needed. All you have to do is cut the one ground wire on the driver side for the BCM to know which module is left and right. I do not have the extra harness from Jimmy07 anymore. Understanding my parts are used, but crack/blemish free, I am asking $700 for the set. The tail lights are $600 new for the ones with the blind spot wiring, and the mirrors are $400-$450 new for the pair. The modules still go for about $100-$200 each. I can ship at your expense or you can pick up in northern Virginia.

I just bought a 2021 Big Horn with 12,500 miles and have spent about 45 days on this forum and countless hours studying and prepping to do this mod ( along with others). All went well until I turned the truck on to test and immediately was hit with the right rear turn signal not working. I reinstalled a different tail light that I know works and still have the same problem. So I'm pretty sure something got unseated while inserting the new pins and putting the XY400 connector back together.

Does anyone know which pins to check in that connector for the right rear turn signals?

Turns out it was a pin that was bent when putting the housing back on. Easy enough.

Overall this was pretty easy. I did use an aftermarket tail light and Did Not have to cut any ground wires on the left side.

I did the computer updates today and took it for a test. Worked first time. I can now see the settings in the Uconnect for blindspot and trailer with trailer set for auto. Will have to wait a minute to test the trailer functionality though.

I'm considering doing the mirrors but may wait for that to do 360 view at the same time.

So, I did my retrofit of the Sensors into the OEM LED Lights, hocked the lights back up and all working as they should. Next step was adding the wires into X400 under the seat into position 39, 40, 41 and 42, run them up to the white bus under the kick panel and plugged them in 2 empty spots. Next, I installed new mirrors with the blind spot LED in the glass and plugged them in the door control module, wires are pin 8 and pin 5 for ground. Used AlfaOBD to set all the parameters necessary for it to work. Now, when I start the truck, the 2 yellow triangle light up in the mirror for 1 sec., self test I guess, but then 5 sec. later I get the message "Blind Spot Temporarily Unavailable, Service Required". When driving around, of course no lights come on when a car is in my blind spot. I checked everything again and again and all is the way it should be. I have the correct jumper harness for the left and right taillights. No pin in #8 of the left harness, only a white dummy pin.
Has anybody any ideas as to what could be the issue?

Thanks for reading.

I am having a similar issue except I don’t get any light on the mirror when I start the truck, just the unavailable message after a few seconds. When I try to change the settings on the screen I get a message that bsm is unavailable. I think my issue may be one of the sensors since I bought used ones. I ordered another pair to see if that fixes it. If that doesn’t work then I am lost as well.

I have 2 new jumper harnesses and 2 new module coming. See where this goes. I checked all the wiring and everything is OK, even Jimmy is out of solutions. Will update when the new parts get here.

I can’t remember if I read it here or somewhere else, but I believe someone was able to isolate the problem area they had on their install by reversing all the configuration changes in AlfaOBD, and then enabled them one side at a time until the error resurfaced.

Maybe try turning off the BSM mirror indicators first and see if you get the same error message about BSM being unavailable. If so, disable the left or right taillight sensor next? I’m not sure if the system will behave doing it this way or not, but it may be worth a shot to see if you can pinpoint the problem area.

I tried all of that already. When I start from scratch, I enable the right module first, no error. Then enable the left module, error comes up. Swapped modules, started again, same outcome. No mirrors enabled at all. Checked all the wiring on the left side, no problem found. Next, installed brand new taillights, same outcome. Don't know where to go from here. Will wait for the new parts and see where this leads.
Thanks.

I figured you had probably already tried to troubleshoot it that way but I was hopeful it would give you a clear path to the issue. Are you certain the pins added to the XY400 connector are properly seated and making a solid connection? Only reason I even mention that is I recently ran across a similar issue with a wire on my fuel level sensor. The wire and pin was in the connector, but the wire itself wasn't making contact with the pin. The broken connection was visually undetectable without disassembling the connector entirely.

I know it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever, but have you tried plugging Jimmy's harness into different ports on the bus just to rule that out as well? Or even flip flop your current two connections at that those ports to see if it changes any symptoms or when the BSM error pops up on the dash? It sounds like you have addressed pretty much everything already, which has me stumped too.

Keep us posted on the new modules and jumper harnesses. Hopefully those help you find success.

Thank you for throwing out some suggestions to fix this problem. Sometimes, 4 eyes see more than 2. Ya, I have checked those pins. I used a multimeter and checked the 4 wires going from the IHS Hub all the way back to the modules, all good, no short. I can use alfaOBD and connect to the door modules and activate each individual LED in the mirror.

Here is all what I checked. If someone has any more ideas, feel free to throw them at me.
Thanks.

Ef****n problem solved. Bought 2 new Modules (68263397AE), brand new, never installed and they work fine. Ignition ON, Right and left Modules enabled, NO ERROR MESSAGE. Added blind spot mirrors, since I have them installed, NO ERROR MESSAGE. CSM 1 and CSM 3 enabled, all working fine. Apparently, my truck did not liked the 68263397AC modules, even brand new. What a nightmare, glad it is over....

Just a heads up for those of you who have the aftermarket mirror glass with blind spot LED, they suck big foot. You can't see them during the day. I installed the OEM mirror glass on both sides, what a different. Now, I'm a happy camper.:giggle:
