Grinding noise when turning to the right

When I first heard the noise I checked the fender liner, didn't see any issues. The grinding noise typically happens on a partial turn 3 o'clock position, off the lock. Was able to duplicate it 3 times in a parking lot, left the steering wheel in same position, couldn't see anything rubbing. I find it strange that several members were able to have the update performed and yet this truck hasn't had any flash updates performed but none are available. When I asked the service writer he explained that even though the TSB covers 2019 & 2020 it only applies to certain vehicles.

Having intermittent grinding noise on 2019 Ram for about a year, turning right slow speed. Saw the TSB and finally a fix. So I took it into the dealer today and they said that the EPS software is up to date. Has anyone else had this issue?
did you bring a copy of the tsb with you to the dealership?

If it's making the noise, the TSB applies to your vehicle. So ridiculous the dealership would say it doesn't apply when the flash is a 100% fix!

Yes handed them a copy of the TSB, shop order: customer states vibration or noise when making right turns - eps module up to date ( no update available).

Hi, My truck have a grinding noise when turning to the right. The noise coming from the steering area. Someone here with the same problem.
The dealership needs to reprogram the module. Electronic power steering. They finally fixed the grinding noise a couple weeks ago.
TSB - 1819569D module. Also on my invoice was: found tsb 08-137-21 rev.b. updated eps software to latest version

Did a search with my symptom and found this thread.

I have a very odd "grinding" or "rubbing" type sound on my 2021 1500 Big Horn 4x2 Crew Cab 5.7 Hemi when turning LEFT (only), at low speeds, at full steering lock.

I've had a quick look under the truck and don't see anything that would cause this noise. I've looked with the wheels straight as well as fully to the left.

I see mention made of TSB 08-137-21, and downloaded the pdf file. This TSB states "vibration felt or noise heard when turning right at low speeds." My issue is turning LEFT, I've not heard this noise turning right.

I have about 7,600 miles on the truck, I bought it about a month ago with 6,xxx miles. I'm the second owner. I tow a 6,000 travel trailer; and I don't know whether the initial owner towed with it. It has the tow package, extended tank, and a 3.92 rear end. It has the original Bridgestone Dueler 20" tires.

From reading through this thread, the symptom/fix list seems to include fresh tires, new steering rack, new steering column, new/better diff oil, and this TSB 08-137-21, referring to reflashing the EPS ECU.

I plan to get an annual oil change next month, and likely will go ahead and get the rear diff fluid changed (I'll assume the first owner towed with it) as a baseline as well. It also would not take much for me to get new tires; I'd vastly prefer LT tires towing, the Bridgestones while comfy feel pretty squishy under load, even plussed up a couple psi.

I'll ask my SA about the noise, but I was wondering if anyone has heard of this noise when turning LEFT, as well as RIGHT. The only time I hear this is at full lock, left hand slow turns. I did see some mention left turns, but the majority of posts mention right, as does the TSB, so I thought I would ask if anyone had luck with the TSB with left hand turn noise.

Either way, I'll report back with what happens to resolve this problem.

Mine makes a winding sound, as if it were one of those wind up cars for kids (plastic gear type stuff). There’s a very obvious peak to the sound and then it winds down. Took it in but to no avail. I plan to get a GoPro under there and see what I find. For the record, it’s a ‘19 Laramie Sport with 50,000 KMs.

Mine is the exact same thing, and when you crawl under it you’ll see some witness marks. I have an open Star case, although the dealer says they are certain they could fix it if Stellantis would approve it. Apparently part of the reason for the Star case is to determine exactly who is at fault (part vendor, etc) and charge them appropriately. If you don’t mind, please report back on your findings.

Yep, same issue here as well. 2019 Ram Limited. I have heard and felt this rubbing/grinding whatever it is a number of times, but have not tried to purposely reproduce the issue. I should try before bringing it in to the dealer. RAM should address this issue and issue a recall. This is an obvious flaw.

Bring a copy of the TSB when you go to the dealer

Have taken my truck several times to the dealer to get them to fix this and have been told each time it couldn't be reproduced and they won't just replace things trial and error. They said they'd have to wait until it became more apparent. For some reason it disappeared when I purchased new tires, but return as they wore. Really strange

I have the same issue on a 2019 Laramie 4x2 Club Cab 5.7 Hemi with 29,200 miles. A slight "rubbing" sound and slight steering wheel vibration when turning right or left at a very low speed, usually when pulling out or backing into my driveway. But not all the time. I scheduled an appointment Friday at the dealer. I described the issue over the phone in hopes I'd get, "Oh of course, we know exactly what that is! Bring it in and we'll fix it!" But no such luck. The rep recommended I shoot a video of it. My wife tried but the engine is so loud it didn't come through. And, it doesn't occur regularly. And as soon as you straighten out, it's gone. I was not able to download the TSB, but will mention the number to the dealer.

Right, so I visited the dealer today for my annual oil change service.

Before I arrived, I tried to replicate the rubbing sound in a parking lot. I turned full lock, both left and right, several times and wasn't able to make the same noise I thought I'd heard. Which is weird because it was noticeable on turning left.

I probably spent 15 minutes doing this. So, bottom line, by the time I arrived at the dealer, I told them I could not in all good conscience say anything was wrong. There's no noise now, at all. Kinda odd but that's where I am.

I did air up the tires to about 38 all around; I don't know, maybe that helped?

At any rate, I just wanted to post back. Those getting the TSB to have their issue fixed, great; I'll just have to keep an eye on mine.

My damn truck screwed me today.

I get the grinding noise all the time on a full lock right. I also get the driveshaft thump every single time I pull from a stop.

Drove with a tech at the dealer today, and it wouldn't do either.

So, nothing fixed... And two weeks left on my warranty.

before warranty runs out, have them flash the TSB just to make sure

They refused. Said the wouldn't without reproducing it.

I wonder if I pay them for an hour of labor if they would. Just want my damn truck fixed. I've owned this thing for like three months and it's been in the shop for more things than every other vehicle I've owned combined.... And I've owned alot of vehicles.

You might want to try a different dealer. I took my truck in and told them I would be happy to drive a tech around and reproduce it if needed. They told me they were aware of this issue and would perform the tsb, no questions asked. Worst case, insist a tech ride with you while you drive around the parking lot until it happens.

I may try another dealer, but next closest is 45 mins away which makes it hard to coordinate a ride home, etc.

I did drive with a tech and couldn't get the truck to do it.. Meanwhile I'm trying not to hit the rows of brand new rams . It was a less than ideal situation.

@RamCares This seems to be a common response from the dealer. I had the grinding very consistently since I bought the truck with 29K miles. The dealer could never get me in so I waited and waited. By that time, I needed new tires so I got them and the noise went away. I know this is temporary because the noise has started to come back ever so slightly and not very often but I can only assume it will get worse as I get more wear on my tires.

Ram has identified this is a problem. Its ridiculous that they won't flash the software. This can't take more than 15-20 minutes and really at what cost to them?? Please help me and the others to get this addressed without the run around we are getting.
