Fingers Crossed...Brake Squeal Resolved

Picked my truck up today. It will be a week or so before the backordered rear brake parts will be in. So far, so good with the squealing. They replaced the front pads which I believe were the cause of the sound. Hopefully, that will fix the squeal and the rear parts will fix the groan.

On a side note, they gave me a 2019 classic 1500 to drive which is the 4th gen body style. Man, I was glad to get back in the fifth gen. It was a 2wd 1500 with 3.21s. The fifth gen is smoother, quieter, and is just so much more pleasurable to drive. It was good to drive them back to back for 1.5 hours each way to really see all the upgrades in the 5th gen. Once all the rear brakes get fixed, I should be a happy camper.

I went in today for this TSB, a new steering wheel and 2 recalls. Oops, the brake parts are on back order. Not a total waste tho and I do like the service advisor I work with at my dealer.

Hi 67 RT,
We'd be happy to look into this for you to try and get the parts delivered sooner. If you're interested, please send us a private message.

Hello J4U,

Would you mind keeping us updated? As I've mentioned to other on the forums, we're collecting as much information as possible and passing it along to the appropriate departments. Thanks for your help and I hope to receive a message soon.

The dealer didn't do all the work they were supposed to. However, they owned up to it, apologized and have another appointment next week to get the front brakes done and a list of other things addressed.

I did want to update you with a possitive though as it seems you only deal with negatives a lot when someone needs help.

The rear brake TSB 05-001-19 has fixed the gawd awful noise when backing out in the cold moist mornings. A full week now without any noise! I've noticed newer TSB's for this issue with fewer parts needed but so far so good.

I still cringe every morning as I put it in reverse, but have enjoyed quiet manuvers out of my driveway and parking spots. Hoping it continues!

Thank you

Thanks a lot for the update, J4U. I'll be sure to pass this along to our internal resources regarding the TSB that was performed. As far as your appointment next week, let me know how that goes. If a case needs to be escalated on the customer care side, don't hesitate to connect with me via direct message.

@RamCares - Just got my truck back. They replaced the rear brakes. I have also had the fronts completely replaced per the TSB. Still squealing every time I drive. What’s next? I have owned cars for over 30 years and never had a vehicle constantly squeal. I’m at wits end here. Are you guys going to ever get this fixed?

I picked up my truck in November 2018. After the first 1400 miles the brakes began squealing so god awfully loud I knew I was going to be in for a wild ride with the dealer. I immediately opened up a case with ramcares to begin the paper trail. After a few calls to the dealer only to hear that I need to brake harder a few times to seat the brakes and that brake squeals are “normal”, I was encouraged to have it looked at during my first oil change.

Fast forward to May 1st and the first maintenance interval for an oil change, tire rotation, 2 recalls and to have my brakes inspected. When I arrived I was sure to tell the check in manager that I came from work and the brakes are hot so if they quickly get someone in they will be able to hear the obscenely loud squeal. He assured me he would get someone out to drive it. At no point within the first hour of my appointment did this occur. I sat watching as my truck was taken into the shop for its routine. After an hour I found myself a seat in the waiting room.

After some time the person who checked the truck in came out and informed me that everything passed inspection and the brake squeal is normal and safe. I informed him that I’m not questioning the safety but rather the quality of life I have every time I come to a stop after it’s warmed up and everyone around me looks at me in disgust. It doesn’t matter how loud the radio is and with all the windows up, everyone in the truck including myself shudder every time I stop.

Today I chatted with ramcare and attached is their response. 25452

Hope Brandi knows they are brakes...not breaks

Mine squeal under normal braking at any speed above 20 mph, which sounds similar to everyone’s comments. It isn’t every time I brake just most of the time, I even took a few video examples and showed them to the service manager. I was told they can’t recreate the noise. Currently my truck is sitting at the dealership for recalls, oil change and the brake issue. It has been a week and the response from the dealership was almost word for word you received from RamCare. I just don’t feel this is a good answer and not something that should be expected in a $55k truck

I am taking my truck into a different dealership next week to have this issue looked at again. This time with and FCA Case and Case Manager. Let’s see if this can get resolved once and for all. Has anyone else taken this route?

I’ve decided NOT to have my 2019 RAM 1500 Laramie Sport factory brake pads replaced under the TSB even though my dealer has ordered them. Here’s why:

My RAM was built 10/18 and its brakes do squeal occasionally under light (touching) application, but are smooth, QUIET and STRONG under hard use, do not fade AND produce practically no brake dust. My RAM has 4-Corner air suspension and corners GREAT at speed. It’s 8 speed transmission is smoothest under aggressive (roll on throttle) acceleration. I keep 89 octane fuel in the tank.

I used to have a Mustang set up for autocross racing and my new RAM 1500 Laramie Sport is the 5,500 pound version of it. It is too much fun to drive exactly how set up from the factory for me to mess with the brake pads, so I’ll continue to carry speed into the corners, brake late and HARD, roll onto throttle through the turn and ENJOY my big luxury autocross racer. The occasional brake squeal is just the RAM telling me to stop driving like my grandma.

I've had my truck in now 5 times to 2 different dealerships. The first dealer said they had done everything that they could and the second dealership said that Chrysler doesn't have a fix for the problem yet. I've had new pads put on the front, the noise went away for a few days and then came right back just slightly more intermittent. I'm beyond fed up with this, good to see what 50K gets you now, a massive run around from dealerships and being told that "maybe on your first oil change (the fall) Chrysler will have a fix for the problem."

Hi erandt26,
I certainly understand why this is frustrating. Has a case been opened on the customer care side to add additional assistance? If not, please send our team a private message and we would be happy to get this process started for you!

Well...here I am back again.

To get all up to date. I purchased my truck last July and have had squealing brakes since nearly day 1. The truck has now had 4 visits to the same dealer with the front rotors and pads replaced, back rotors and pads replaced, and then most recently, rear pads, brackets and bolts replaced per the TSB

Guess what....It still hasn't fixed the obnoxious squealing. FCA continues to ask me to take it back to the dealer for some reason in hope that another set of pads will fix this issue. I am so beyond frustrated at this point that I am not sure what to do.

My options at this point are limited:
1) Live with it - not going to happen as it is obnoxious in addition to a $50K truck
2) Hire a lemon law attorney - just not sure if noise falls under a lemon law
3) File a complaint with the Attorney General, BBB and post all dealer paperwork and visits on social media to include video of noise. This will hopefully get other caution when buying a truck that for some reason is not able to be fixed.

Any additional ideas are welcome as I am tired of taking my truck back to the dealership for the same end result. My last conversation with FCA was asking me to schedule another appointment.

At the end of the day if not fixed it will be the last FCA product I will have in my family. Unfortunate, as I am a long time Wrangler owner and would likely buy another one. This would 100% change that loyalty.

@4midlife and @erandt - I feel both of your pain very much. I just picked up my Ram from a second dealer. This was my 6th trip in for this problem. I too have had fronts and rears replaced. This time i actually had an open case with FCA. Let me tell you, no offense to the @RamCares folks, but that was a serious waste of time. I got the run around yet again. We can't replicate it, its normal with metallic pads, blah blah blah. Guess what within 5 miles of the dealership it started again on my drive home. I have provided video proof, etc. No one cares. This will not get fixed. This was my first Ram after being a Ford (and other import cars) owner. I can tell you for certain it is my last.

There are a couple of other options here. One that I am considering is going to arbitration and asking for a buy back. Here is the link to the details. Can't hurt and the consumer isn't bound to the finding (but the manufacturer is if it is in your favor). https://www.ncdsusa.org/consumers/automotive-warranty-disputes/

The other option is to wait for someone to make an aftermarket set.

I have already gone down the arbitration path and failed as FCA came back and said the noise is deemed normal and that it is no way impedes the use of the vehicle and or presents a safety issue. This is why I am considering getting a lawyer to represent my case.

@4midlife Please let me know how that goes. You can PM me. I am interested in what may come of it.

I'm also having brake issues at just over 4000 miles. Mine squeal upon light braking in the morning at around 40-30 mph when coming to a stop. This is not normal at all. I've owned over 20 vehicles in the last 17 years and never had this issue with a new vehicle. I just got my truck back after a total of 34 days in the shop for other various warranty issues. They tried to replicate but drove it in 90 degree plus weather after me telling them it only happens in the cooler mornings. The service adviser even said he has got a lot of complaints about the brakes from other new truck owners. Wish RAM would step up.

Mine should be going in next week for the brake squeal and other things. I'll post back if they get it fixed.
Sending this video to Ram Cares since they asked about the issues. Mine also does the groaning when backing up, but I didn't get a clip of it. The squeal bothers me much more.

The squealing brake noise in your video is the exact noise I have also. I need a better device to capture it. Oh and my passenger mirror does that also when trying to auto fold it.
