Yep. If every po’d owner said “never again” to every vehicle brand, there would be nothing to buy/drive. Even mighty Toyota has been having big problems the last couple years.
I’m in the same boat as others on this thread, dead MGU with no eta on replacement.Has anyone actually pulled a dead MGU apart to identify what these bearings are that are failing? I've replaced a fair number of bearings in my life and it's not rocket science. Maybe there's a solution to service the mechanicals? I'm still driving my RAM so I'm not in position to pull it apart.
It's frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a problem with the system itself (at least in my case) - just crappy, cheap bearings. No excuse for stuff like that.
I checked first if the sound was matching the RPM (changing pitch with engine RPM), then I checked where it was coming from (top of the engine). If your sound matches these two checks, I'd take it in.I just started hearing the noise that makes my truck sound like a battery operated golf cart. It is pretty loud (I can hardly hear the exhaust sounds that I used to love to hear). Is this what the issue is? I guess I need to get it to a dealership and get the recall work and this done, if so.
That would be great if he would write up a how to ( rebuild MGU ) im sure in the future there is gonna be alot more as years and miles get greater.Well, that is great news. It would be a big help to the forum if you’d write up a “how to, how I did this” so, I know there are many of us, that would just rebuild it. Too bad dealerships just don’t do it for us.
Plus, list the bearing source/part number and if any special tools were needed.
It’s good in this case, just repairing/replacing the bearing, doesn’t need to have the dealer reprogram the MGU.
I'm dealing with the same problem as apparently 5100 others as that's the total number on backorder the parts manager told me at the dealership with no idea when they'll be receiving them.....$50000 paper weight currently and no idea what to doI have a 2020 ram 5.7 bought new. My alternator has failed and no hope in sight. Only a dealer can install it apparently, and the dang part isn’t available on back order. Used ones if you can find them are not much cheaper than the new ones. I’ve owned three different ram trucks and this one will be the last. What’s a truck worth that will not run and can’t get repaired. It sure leaves a sour taste in your mouth paying on a vehicle that is useless. Anyone have any ideas where to get on. I’ve been on back order since November.
Not to bust your bubble but they'll just keep kicking the date down the road as that's what keeps happening to me and I assume everyone else....keeps moving 7-10 days at a time and I'll call and they move it again....sorryTalked to my service tech this morning, she tells me it's scheduled for a Feb 10th delivery.
Reading this thread makes me doubt her, hoping she's right.
Will do. I didn't want to write it up on my phone, but will try to type out how I did it. I will start a new thread on Etorque bearing replacement.Well, that is great news. I posted the write up in a new thread, eTorque Bearing Replacement, Fixed Grinding Noise. Hopefully it is helpful. That would be great if he would write up a how to ( rebuild MGU ) im sure in the future there is gonna be alot more as years and miles get greater.
My SM says I can drive mine (it still charges the battery fine, just sounds bad) but to "keep it on a short leash."I'm dealing with the same problem as apparently 5100 others as that's the total number on backorder the parts manager told me at the dealership with no idea when they'll be receiving them.....$50000 paper weight currently and no idea what to do
I was told the same thing - but mine has now died with no battery charging. And I'm in a tough spot for self-service as we have about 3 feet of snow on the ground now with temps below freezing for the next couple of weeks. My SM says I can drive mine (it still charges the battery fine, just sounds bad) but to "keep it on a short leash."
I plan to drive it until the MGU fails, then Ram can pay for the tow and a loaner.
It is funny that the dealership says We cant get parts or the whole unit for months , but then some one post a link to a mopar place that has 25 of them , hmmmmmm,It is not looking good for a replacement, mine has been in the shop for a month and a half, was told the 29th of January but received an update of February 9th now but then told, don't count on it. RAM is no help. Since I am out of the factory warranty they will not cover any loaner or rental, the extended warranty covers 5 days. This will be the last RAM/Dodge product I will ever buy. What pisses me off is all of the trucks being made and shipped that sit on the lot.
What link?It is funny that the dealership says We cant get parts or the whole unit for months , but then some one post a link to a mopar place that has 25 of them , hmmmmmm,
Read back through this thread for details. If it's the MGU, you are in the same boat as many of us with a non-drivable truck and no replacement parts available.Well, I started to have issues with mine making a whining noise that paralleled the RPM's. I did some research on the whining noise and it sounded like it had to do with the e-torque pully system which I read was covered under warranty. Last night driving home from work, towards the end of the drive I started to hear a rattling noise. When I got home, popped the hood, and it sounded like the noise was coming from the belt area. Shortly after I got home from work we had to go pick something up about 10 minutes away. On our way my I received an error on my dash regarding the start/*stop (with the light indicator coming on), low battery light, and check engine light.
Called the dealership earlier today and they said they could get me in tomorrow. I explained the sounds and my thinking that it was the pulley system based on my research. After I told him about the lights, he said that sounds like your GMU went bad. Tonight after work I drove the truck to the dealership and dropped it off hoping that my battery wouldn't go and leave my truck powerless. I made it to the dealership.
Anyone know if there is any relationship between the pulley system and the GMU or are they two separate issues? I am hoping whatever it is it is covered under warranty. They did confirm if its the pulley system that it is covered with a $100 deductible. Any insight would be helpful.
The dealership confirmed it is my GMU. No timeline was given when I asked how long. I do know that there are two people in front of me waiting on the same part. They said they recently fixed one and the owner waited 4 1/2 months to get the part. I was lucky enough that they gave me a loaner vehicle until my truck is fixed. The GMU is covered in full as it falls under some Emissions section. That I am thankful for.Read back through this thread for details. 4.5 months, holy crap! The dealership confirmed it is my GMU. No timeline was given when I asked how long. I do know that there are two people in front of me waiting on the same part. Agreed! I hope that isn't the case for me.4.5 months, holy crap!
