E torque alternator.

I try to understand by reading what you write....
here in Italy, due to absurd regulations, new cars must all be at least mild hybrid (more or less like the RAM)
but .... I seem to have understood that the RAM (I have a 1500 e-torque 2022) uses the generator ONLY for starting with S/S.... is this correct?
yet when starting from a standing start the ram seems very "ready" to me
Correct.
Your vehicle must meet certain criteria in order for S/S to be ready.
This is not a comprehensive list, but I know Engine/fluid temps AND cabin temp need to be up to par for it to enable S/S.

Via the first start with push button, or remote start if you have it, the primary 12V starter using the 12V battery starts your truck.

I know there are grumbles on S/S… all across the spectrum.
I fall on the side of, it doesn’t bother me in my Ram like it has on other vehicles I’ve driven, it is super smooth.
The only time I turn it off is in bumper to bumper traffic or a drive through, then it becomes a bit annoying.
But in day to day city driving, it truly doesn’t bother me at all and I’ve had zero issues with it.

I know others aren’t as lucky.

dajogejr, I get it.
Yes... I know the criteria that need to be met before S/S works correctly because they are more or less the same on all european mhev cars.
but what would be really strange about the RAM is the fact that the electric unit never helps the master engine, really??

Only S/S is too little to provide any benefits.
I hope I have interpreted correctly, because it is not easy to distinguish reading who complains about the existence of the S/S or who complains about its functioning.
I use S/S just like you: I deactivate it when it is of no help/becomes too intrusive - in fact there is a deactivation button and for this I think there must be a reason why it exists - Maybe I'm having trouble understanding why mine fortunately works well.
Thank's

I believe the S/S when it activates a start does roll the vehicle a very small amount (can t remember the numbers) like 1/2 turn of the tire to get it moving . The system does more than just stop/start the engine. there is a vid around that explains all of it. I don t think the savings on fuel (if any) is worth the cost and potential troubles .

search u tube and there are a few good explanations . my above statement was correct.

Good video, too bad they can’t tell you when you can get it replaced if/when it fails.

Coming from 3 previous Hemi trucks, non e torque (2006, 08, 2015) I can notice the differences:
S/S obviously, not in the previous 3 trucks
Very, Very smooth shifting while accelerating.
Regenerative braking is very noticeable…and my gut tells me my brakes will last longer as a result, I simply don’t need to use them as often/as hard of a press.
I can’t say I notice the extra torque it supplies for the first half tire rotation by the seat of my pants.

Good/bad/worth it/not system? To each their own on that. Because mine is working just fine, of course I don’t have a negative opinion.
If I had it fail, like others have, I’d probably sour on it a bit…

Extended or not, if the alternator/generator goes south, you'll be in the same boat. Not sure it has any bearing (pun intended) on the parts reliability (or lack thereof in some cases).
This is why I don't have an extended warranty. Worth nothing if they can't fix it or if they want to fight you on what's covered.

I agree that a truck must be always ok and used without worries, but if something happens it's nice to understand what happened

If you get the “right” extended warranty, in my case, second truck with Max Care, there’s really no fighting.
What the warranty can’t help you with is time. If a part is out of stock, back order, etc….
What it can help with is unexpected repairs…

Your money, your preference… I get it.
With all the tech on these trucks, I won’t go without extended to the max, in my case, 8 yr, 125K miles. And I hope I never have to use it.

I had mine start to go on my '21 BTS. I bought a used one off ebay with a couple hundred miles on it. It had the other vehicles VIN but that does matter. No need to reflash if it's used. It's a heavy SOB.

Just to close this out. After contact Stellantis Customer Care on 2/18, the dealer received a new MGU on the 27th and I got it installed today. About 1.5 hours labor total. The dealer also updated the dash display software and the 12" display software (a nice touch). So about 5 weeks from when I first went to the dealer with the bearing noise to finish. My recommendation is that if you are starting to hear this noise and the dealer confirms it's the MGU, contact Customer Care right away as they did seem to be able to expedite the part.

And for those of you navigating this mess, the dealer informed me that the MGU is not covered under the 8/80,000 powertrain warranty. They were pretty insistent about it. So it would have been about $2,000 out of pocket total - except I had an extended warranty, so I was 'only' out $100 for the deductible.

I'm going to confirm with CC whether the part is or is not covered under the powertrain warranty.

And on the technical side, they wouldn't give me the old unit as they want the cores. And the part number I received is 68623194AB. Not sure what my original p/n was as the label is underneath, but I'm guessing since I have a 2021, I may have had an older revision. The 'AB' is what I see in all the online parts catalogs so from this I'm guessing there is no 'AC' revision yet.

In the end, I don't fault the whole start/stop mild-hybrid system. This was 100% a problem from the use of inferior parts. A plain alternator may have the same issues if it uses the same bearing supplier.

Good luck.
