All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded.
This bit of make believe looks like it came from a 2018 editorial in the
Augusta Chronicle. So did some of the rest. One of the bittersweet attributes of getting old is that you've seen most of these worries, predicted catastrophes and histrionics before. More than a country, the USA is a human ideal, the natural born desire of humans to be free and pursue what they call happiness.
But freedom is a confounding principal because your freedom to (insert topic here) will probably infringe on someone else's freedom to (insert topic here). Try inserting shoot guns, peace and quiet. The list is infinite.
Of all places, that bastion of liberalism,
The New Yorker has this to say:
In 1917, Woodrow Wilson’s Administration had promised that winning the Great War would “make the world safe for democracy.” The peace carved nearly a dozen new states out of the former Russian, Ottoman, and Austrian empires. The number of democracies in the world rose; the spread of liberal-democratic governance began to appear inevitable. But this was no more than a reverie. Infant democracies grew, toddled, wobbled, and fell: Hungary, Albania, Poland, Lithuania, Yugoslavia. In older states, too, the desperate masses turned to authoritarianism. Benito Mussolini marched on Rome in 1922. It had taken a century and a half for European monarchs who ruled by divine right and brute force to be replaced by constitutional democracies and the rule of law. Now Fascism and Communism toppled these governments in a matter of months, even before the stock-market crash of 1929 and the misery that ensued.
But I am greatly encouraged that some of us are thinking and debating these issues and not just religiously clinging to silly beliefs like global warming. Do not give up our Constitutional rights without fighting like your life depends upon it. It does.
Note, The New Yorker defines fascism here as Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy. This is about as close as the word can be defined.
After World War Two some of the returning veterans had trouble integrating back into American society. The Hells Angels motorcycle gang was founded by some of these misfits. They tattooed Swastikas on their bodies to anger the average joe. They didn't know or care about Fascism or Communism, they just wanted to scare and anger people. ANTIFA is the modern day, transgender version of that.
