UConnect Nav Guidance Volume setting

I've been trying to track down this major annoyance.

I went to the dealer, they are no help. They say that they checked and all vehicles do this, so it's not a problem with my BigHorn. Yes of course, it's a firmware/software problem in all units! LOL I guess their mindset is that if my truck is the same as others, then it's ok and working properly! LOL But this is a separate issue as this dealer doesn't seem to want to look into issues of this type (I have a list of several things like this).

When I first got my truck in January. and up until approximately two days ago (plus or minus, as I don't check this every day) the Nav Guidance Volume level setting would always default to 15. This is MUCH too loud! If you try to set it to a lower volume level (I find that 4 to be about right with the windows closed, it's not to soft, but loud enough to be heard over traffic and music), the setting would not hold. After starting the truck after it sat a while with the power off (about an hour, or over night), the Nav Guidance Volume level would reset itself to 15 again.

Now as of a couple days ago to talk about how it's working now: The Navigation Guidance volume setting is holding at my choice of 4! I don't know why it's holding now. but it is (with limited testing). Perhaps we received a blind software/firmware update to the UConnect or system over the air? I have no way of knowing as I wasn't tracking the software versions.

But with the Nav Guidance Volume setting sticking at my chosen level of 4, BUT it's still not functioning correctly!

This is strange to notice and test. It seems to be using the volume level at the old default 15 loudness, even though the display is showing 4! It's quite loud and easy to hear. But then if you go into the Nav settings menu, choose Nav Guidance and set the volume up one click to 5 (or down one click to 3) and then back to 4 again, now the loudness of the Nav guidance is at the proper softer volume level. So it seems the actual volume of the Nav guidance voice is always very loud until you change the Nav Guidance volume level. This is hard to test as you need to notice the volume level of the guidance sound, and then click it up/down (or down/up) and then notice the change in volume.

So it's unknown to me why the Nav Guidance volume level is working differently than in the first month of me owning the truck, but it's still not implemented correctly, in that you will be startled by the volume of the Nav Guidance.

I test it by setting the Speed Limit warning on. You can set to give a warning at or above/below the posted speed limit. Under normal use, I keep this speed limit warning set to +10 MPH over the speed limit, but during testing you can lower this and cause the Nav unit to talk almost on demand by speeding up or down. LOL

I have the 8.4 display with Nav and the standard 6 speaker 'radio' (NOT Alpine nor HK) on the Bighorn.

Sorry for the long post, I'm trying to provide as much info as I can on this frustrating issue.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Odd. Have you tried setting nav/guidance volume with the volume knob instead of the Uconnect menu?

If you turn the volume knob while nav/guidance is speaking, the system *should* change the volume knob function to nav/guidance instead of the radio.

The problem isn't the knob setting, it's the initial volume level. This is a menu setting the Nav Guidance Volume. It kept defaulting to 15.

Now it appears to hold a lower setting (and I'm not sure why, as previously the it kept resetting itself to 15), but the initial volume level is higher than what the setting says (as if it was still set to 15), until you toggle the setting itself.

Until you play with it, it may not make sense as to what I'm saying. And I'm not sure if holding the lower setting is a new 'quirk', or I just haven't found the method to reliably reproduce it yet.

Various threads on this.. the NAV Volume always defaults to 15... there currently no way to adjust.
I thought it mentioned somewhere you can lower it to 12 and it will stay there, but that isn't a big enough difference for me to try.

This is my point, Friday morning I noticed that my setting was holding at 4 and not resetting to 15. It's now Sunday and it's still holding at 4, but with the side effect as described.

Prior to this, my truck was resetting to 15 consistently.

Have you adjusted the volume up (via the knob, not through UConnect) then turned off the truck? Does it stay at 4?

I'll check tomorrow, but if I remember changing the volume knob doesn't ever affect the guidance volume setting. It only affect the radio volume.

I wish the nav guidance volume was affected by the volume knob and the volume offset between the radio and nav guidance volume was set by the guidance volume setting.

Not sure I understand... if you adjust the volume knob while the NAV is talking, you can lower the volume and it stays that way until you turn off the truck. Once the truck is turned back on, the volume goes to the original setting... at least that is how it works on my truck.

It works this way when I'm using the Android Auto maps (Waze) but with the RAM Nav, I've been testing with the speed limit warning and haven't tried the volume knob yet. I'll do it later as I'm headed to the gym.

You are the first person that i have heard that has had the volume reset, as it is set to do, to 15 as in how loud it is actually emitting, but that when you look at the setting says it is at a lower volume number. You are also correct that the Volume buttons only do radio volume not the Navigation volume.

So no one else's setting is holding at a lower setting? This must be some other bug.

I guess I'm the lucky one.

I asked my dealer if we could send a problem report to the factory about this and other issues, and he didn't seem interested at all. He kept saying g that I could mention the problems when I get a customer satisfaction survey from FCA and I may have better luck that he would. I tried to get him to make the reports anyway, but he had no interest at all.

It's back to 15 again!

It's cold out so I remote started my truck and then checked the guidance setting and it was back to 15! Lol

Mine definitely does not do this. If I adjust my volume to any level while Navigation is talking via my turn knob, the Truck remembers its last setting no matter how long it’s shut off. You absolutely need an update to correct your glitch.

I tried it again and it is working as you said if I adjust it while speaking nav guidance.

I also noticed if you have a route guidance in progress if you go to the maps screen and press the right hamburger menu button you can press repeat directions and it allows you to play with the volume easier.

It does hold the setting when stopping the truck, but will reset to 15 again later.

So it's still much too loud at 15! We need a starting volume default of something else.

My guess is that no one cares about this. It sure would be nice if we could lower the initial volume level.

I don't know why mine wasn't resetting for the past 4 days. Maybe remote start? Who knows?!?

Wow, which radio and firmware versions do you have?

Mine resets. Do you use remote start after an overnight rest? Maybe a combination of remote start when it's below freezing may be the right combination?

I have the same issue. Even thou it shows 4 on mine it still plays at the 15 volume. If I change it to 3 or 5 and back to 4 it stays at 4 until I restart the truck. It's pretty annoying

I'll need to check the version, but with below 0 temps, I remote start via UConnect and/or key fob all the time. I would roll into the dealer and get the latest and greatest. Can't hurt.

Ok this is really getting annoying and strange.

I left my home this morning, it was below freezing, so I remote started it. Before leaving I checked the setting and it was back to 15 as I previously reported.

I tested and changed the nav guidance volume setting using the volume knob and the steering wheel controls, they both work while the nav guidance is speaking, but when it's not talking, it affects the radio volume. You can see this on the top status bar of the radio where is shows the volume setting as you're changing the dial. While the nav is speaking, if you turn the volume knob, you can see the nav guidance volume setting (e.g. 5, 4, 3 as I turn the knob), but then if you catch the timing just right, you can see the volume setting for the radio get displayed, perhaps 8 or 10 or whatever your music/radio volume is set to.

So here is the annoying and strange part! I was at the gym for just under 2 hours. As I left, I checked the setting of the radio after push button starting (not a remote start), my previous setting of 4 was still there. I drove about 1 mile, stopped for coffee (about 2 minutes), got back in and started the truck again. It was still at my setting of 4.

I then headed home, about 1 mile from the coffee shop here comes a speed announcement... damn it was LOUD again! Checking the setting and it was back to 15!!!

So I can't understand when it decides to reset the value to 15! At this point it seems random, and certainly isn't when you start or first turn on the vehicle, as I had checked it just after starting the truck, but before leaving the coffee shop.

If it wasn't so damn loud, I could live with it. Perhaps this a byproduct of the quietness of the 2019 RAM 1500? It's so quiet in the cab with the windows closed, that it seems much too loud. We still need a way to set the 'default' Nav Guidance Volume level. 15 is much too loud!

So has anyone come up with a repeatable method to show when the Nav Guidance Volume will reset itself?

If I can't duplicate and show the dealer, there is no way to even think about getting this addressed. As it is, I am not sure if I can even get him to look at the list of software glitches. This is just one of them.

Yes, mine was doing this for the past few days, but for some unknown reason, it just started to reset itself to a displayed value of 15 again!

I'd love to have him check it. But when I was there Friday, he seemed to not be interested in checking. I was a bit late for my original appointment so perhaps they were annoyed with me and that's why? But he kept saying that the has no easy way to get reports back to FCA of a problem and I'd have much better luck doing it myself, but he didn't offer any method to do that other than "keep an eye out for the satisfaction survey" that I may receive soon.

I guess I'll have to slam dealer service and some software bugs in the survey. LOL
