Back in 2003 when the 5.7 was released, it was a pretty good location. That said, I think all oil filters should be mounted on top of the engine like this Subaru I detailed before I sold it.

I change my oil at about 5,000 miles because that's how many miles I put on my truck per year. I'd probably go to 7-8,000 miles of I drove more.
That's how the last WRX I owned was. My current Audi also has the oil filter located on top. Makes it nice when changing oil.

Edit: I forgot to say what my OCI's are. I've been doing them once a year. I put 7-8k miles on each of my vehicles per year. But I might start changing it more often now after seeing how much better my truck runs with fresh oil. Could just be a placebo effect, but I'll probably change it in the spring and in the fall each year from here out.

Who reports oil changes to Carfax? I do all my own oil changes. I do 5k mile oil changes just because of how aggressively I drive my truck, I causing trios to drag strip.
You can use the Carfax app to keep track of your oil changes, but only an official Carfax shop will show up on the carfax report. All the DIY stuff won't show up when the carfax report is pulled.

Every 5000 miles for me.. mostly city driving and I don’t drive it hard. But I want to keep this truck a long time, so…. figured the earlier and more often I change it the better.
Nothing wrong with that. Just feel that these newer oils are just as good at 10000 miles

I start thinking about scheduling my oil change when I get below 25%, definitely before it hits zero. I run synthetic.

With my 11 Ram I never had a problem changing it when the oil life monitor says it needs to be changed. Never had any engine issues in the 80k miles I had it. I'm doing the same thing g with my new 21 as well

What if the dealer states a particular change interval, but the oil life monitor doesn't agree? Could sticking with the monitor over the dealer cause warranty issues down the road?

For example, my last oil change was done at the dealer-recommended mileage interval, but the oil life monitor was still showing 45% at that time. I didn't bat an eye when I brought it in though.....I am really hoping to have this truck for a long time and I am intent on doing my part to encourage that.

But I'm curious about the letter of the law.....

5K or around 50% for me, my driving style was spirited before gas got expensive so now that I’m driving conservatively maybe ill go to 25%.

I think it all depends on the actual engine. I normally change oil every 7500miles or so, but with my 2019(just traded for a 2020 with WAY less miles), my first oil change wasnt until about 13000 miles. After they changed it i asked them how bad the oil was. The tech told me it looked perfect and he saved it so he could put it in his truck the following day. He said it looked like it had 1500 miles max.

Every oil change after that was at least 15000 miles and every tech said it was still pretty clean oil and had life left.

That being said, i have also had engines that would be completely black after 2500 miles.

Every 6 months/6,000 miles. Semi synthetic at the Ram dealership. My indicator usually says I got about 40% left at that point. I wouldn't go by that. I pay more for oil changes at the dealership but I don't care. I don't want to have to keep records & if there is a warranty issue, they've got it all on their computer. Usually around $55, but sometimes u get a coupon in the mail or on their website.

Unless they are sending the oil into a lab for oil analysis, there is no way to tell how much life was left in the oil.

The dealer calls me every 3 months to schedule my service (not free), and I tell them how much oil life I have left so they say to wait. I think they try to figure when you are gonna hit 3k miles after an oil change so they can make more money. No reason to change that frequent on vehicles now days running synthetic motor oil. This may have been true in the 60s when engines had carbs and loose tolerances.

Going by the oil change sticker the dealer I take my work van to(Ram Primater City), they are doing 6000 mile oil changes.

The dealers make money from services. That's why they say every 3 or 5k miles. Look in your owners manual to see what the manufacturer recommends. With todays modern quality oils it's not unheard of to safely go 10k miles between changes under normal driving conditions. You can also send a sample of the oil to Blackstone Labs for an analysis to see how the oil is actually doing.

I get the supplies at 4,000 so that I'll get around to changing it at 5,000  . Last time the oil meter said 50% when I changed it. I'm probably wasting time and money changing it that often, but it helps me sleep at night. I've also rotated the tires every oil change too.
Sometimes piece of mind is all that matters
