I have had a few people ask me about changing the rear end fluid out on their 5th Gen. So I grabbed a camera when I did mine. Pretty straight forward. Glad they got rid of the plug on the pumpkin and just went straight forward with a drain and fill plug.

Doesn’t Severe Gear already have the friction modifier already in it? I know that Redline diff oil does.

Do you have the standard limited slip rear or some type of optional locker?

No, their website specifies adding 5oz.

The Severe Gear does have some friction modifier in it. You can run it without the the additive and if you get some chattering then you can add the additive until it goes away.

Like I said, their website does not say "use it without unless it chatters". It says add it.

Should I use a friction-modifier additive with AMSOIL synthetic gear lube?​


AMSOIL synthetic gear lubes are limited-slip capable and do not typically require an additional friction-modifier additive.


However, depending on the differential’s friction material and degree of clutch wear, chatter can still sometimes occur. The addition of AMSOIL Slip Lock will eliminate chatter in mechanically sound differentials.
Ok I was just going by what their website said “That Amsoil synthetic gear lubes are limited slip capable and typically do not require an additional friction modifier.” I guess I’ll stick with Redline then.

Its obviously not identical, but I used Amsoil Severe Gear in my 2014's rear diff. It had the LSD, and it still needed the friction modifier; in a reverse turn, she would chatter/slip. Added a quarter of the recommended amount, and it helped, but would still do it in tight reverse turns. Ended up using approximately half the modifier that is recommended for regular gear oil, and that cleared that chatter right up.

I’m also assuming that since you’re using 75-110 that you have 3.21 or 3.55 gears since 75-140 is what’s recommended for 3.92s by the user manual.

Just curious, not sure if you have 4x4 or not, but did you also change the transfer case and front axle? Have you notice a difference after changing the rear differential fuild?

The rear seems to be grippier. If that makes sense. The actual gear seems to grip faster than before, forward movement. I have always had a slight delay when pressing the pedal, and that has decreased. Unsure if that is just my truck or all of these. I also attribute that the tranny.

Amsoil and Mobil1 never states how much friction modifier they carry by volume. However Redline does.

Amsoil does. You just plug in your truck and it says 5oz as I mentioned.

Sorry dumb question...how do I know if I have the limited slip or not? Can I check this by the VIN?

The easiest way is to check your window sticker for the "Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle".

The window sticker is known to be wrong on occasion so your build sheet that UnloosedChewtoy mentioned will be the definitive answer.
