I had no idea the reasoning behind the switch in vendors. Just noticed the difference in materials quality between my 2017 and my 2020 limited. Thanks for letting me know.

Saying you’ll buy a chebbie because of the rambox problem is like me going back to the Prius because the hemi uses too much gas. Theres no comparison as one maker has nothing to do technologically/engineering wise with the other as far as the item.

I’ll just keep the ride and interior of the Limited Ram 1500 and not be concerned about the missing rambox.

Hope you like/enjoy the chebbie. I favored Ford’s myself previous to this but the cheb does have a good new 6.6 engine, 401 hp & 464 tq with a 6 speed.

Now for a 250/2500 gasser I’d likely go back to Ferd with the new 7.3 to tow with (430 hp, 475 tq and the 10 speed auto).

RAM needs to step up their drivetrains a bit in hp and tq to stay competetive (410 hp 429 tq, 8 speed auto).

I believe our Ram Boxes are the result of FCA trying to increase profitability. The corners cut on quality make me think I have tupperware boxes. The hotter the weather the more they move and pop at the ends. Its very disappointing and FCA has yet to address this.

I had a 2017 Ram 1500 Sport with the rambox and never had a single issue with them. When operating them you could tell They were clearly better built on the 4th gen.

My 2020 has a slight warp on the back of the passenger side Rambox I'll be keeping my eyes on. The front of it, and both ends of the driver-side unit, are almost perfect. The one warp is approximately the same my 2014 had on all four ends. My 2014's were never that well aligned. When I got it used at roughly 35k miles, they were loose and did not seal well. I learned how to add a few washers to the latch bolts, which tightened them up nicely and they sealed fine after that, but they still didn't "line up" perfectly on the ends.

As long as they still seal well and keep the elements out, I don't care if they do not align perfectly with the bed. Its a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the utility of the Ramboxes.

I agree, I think they should be a little more heavy duty, but when trying to reduce weight, sacrifices are sometimes made. Did they sacrifice too much? We'll see.

For anyone thinking Chevy or Ford, please go visit their forums. They have issues just like we do with various things. I don't want to turn this thread into a Big Three debate, so I won't say anymore than this about it... I have had friends/family with Ford, Toyota, GMC, etc., and after riding in them all, I'll stick with Ram and Jeep, but to each their own.

‘I agree, I think they should be a little more heavy duty, but when trying to reduce weight, sacrifices are sometimes made. Did they sacrifice too much?”
quick story about the chasing of weight reduction by anal automotive engineers:

It’s 1982. I have a brand new full sized Jeep Cherokee, 2 door, hub equipped 4x4, 360 v8, 4 speed. “Ahh, the perfect suv“ or so I thought. 1st week out driving on local unpaved roads. Shifting into reverse to do a 3 point, “bam“ the floor shifter comes right out of the boot cover... WTH?

I can’t fit it back into the floor and shift. I walk a mile to a corner gas station and call the Jeep owners service #. (No cellphones fellas). Tow truck eventually sent and back we go into the dealership. I get the unit back the next day. Same thing happens in town a week later...

Pissed, I go talk to the service manager. He tells me that it is a new to 1982 weight-saving designed aluminum cotter pin which is holding the shifter into the floor. That‘s what they have to replace it with.

So I go to the line mechanic and say “Do you want this truck back again because you won’t replace it with a steel cotter key?“ The mechanic goes to his parts shelf, gets a steel cotter pin, installs it and I never have a problem again.

Weight saving mania...

Has anyone experienced the RamBox popping open on its own? My truck started going this in the last few days. For no reason what so ever the drivers side ram box would pop open as if someone had pressed the button but no one was near it. Passenger side is fine. I can't figure out whats triggering it. And it doesn't seem to be warped (yet).

I'll be taking it in for the issue, but I'm not confident they'll do anything. I fear they'll simply say 'we cannot reproduce.'

So wondering if anyone has any experience with it?

Never had the “popping open” issue, but finally took truck to dealer about small leak at back of driver’s side RamBox (torrential rain or car wash). Got it back two days later with a bigger leak (length of the box) after first car wash. Now it’s hard to close, and face near to button is now pulled in compared to the side of pickup box. I must have got the “bend the striker” fix. I waited 22k miles to give them time to “practice “ on other trucks. Delaying didn’t help. Tops of boxes misaligned within a few months of purchase, but it’s not an issue with me as long as I can keep stuff dry inside.

I had the driver's side one pop open while I was driving. I find myself having to slam them shut now to make sure it stays closed. They are both warped at the far end towards the back but I am not about to let the dealer make it worse... They don't seem to know how to fix these issues or just don't want to replace them with better boxes. Kinda sucks... I loved the last gen ones... These lids feel and look cheap... cost savings or not they really dropped the balls on the new style ram boxes...

My dealer just ignores my complaints about my ram box looks. I can't stand how it looks in the mirror.

@RamCares does the same. They never replied to me and my dealership gave me the “we have a star case open” runaround until I stopped asking.

I complained to my new dealer about a month ago and they fixed mine. Looks much better. I need to have them adjust the repair a little bit it’s not curled up on the end anymore.

Do you know how they fixed it - was it adjusted or replaced? One of mine is warped now on my 2 month old truck with 1,000 miles.

Hi @cipherbreak, we are sorry for the trouble! However, we seem to have not received any messages from you regarding this concern. If you intend to readdress this with your dealer, please do not hesitate to reach out again with your VIN.

I’ll look for my service receipt. I believe they replaced the plastic caps.

I have a service appointment next Friday to replace one of the covers. When I initially brought it in, they looked at it and said nope we can’t readjust that, need to order a new lid. The only thing I’m worried is that they sent it out to get painted before the install and I’m hoping that it’s matched. Otherwise it’s going to look odd.

My driver side box has a slight warp in it. Tough to notice on an all black truck, but I constantly see it. I am convinced that with payload numbers being so low on the fully loaded trim packages, FCA decided they needed to cut material and weight everywhere possible. The ramboxes seem to be one of those areas.
