New member here, and hopefully the new owner of a RAM very soon! I have a deposit down on the following truck. Before I wrap it up, let me know how you think I did, I'm sure like most dealerships, they don't make it easy or clear to understand with all the rebates and forcing Chrysler financing on me at some high rate (but we haven't gone through rates yet).
A quick read through here, and it seems like getting 10K below MSRP is somewhat common on a truck in this price range...

What do you all think?

The MSRP is $55,555
PP of $51,815 (corp 1% below invoice)

Wheel locks 199 (eye roll)
User fee 1,359
Registration 910
Admin fee 13

Sub Total $54,297
Rebates ($6,000) apparently 1,500 of this is contingent on me taking said loa, which makes little sense to me.

Total price $48,296

This will be my first truck and I think it has most of what I want. It would have been nice to have the LED light package and the blind spot feature... but other than that.
It is missing some other things that I'm used to having in my car like memory seats and power seats for the passenger, rain sense wiper, adaptive CC and a few other minor things.

Am I missing anything else that would be an oversight?

Thanks!

I was told those are taxes.
As far as why not Laramie, probably bc I don't know exactly what I'm doing. I like the blacked out night package. Does Laramie have that? Can I get all these options at the same price?

I would expect to see a minimum of $6k off msrp in the form of a dealer discount plus any manufacturer rebates.

I bought my truck 3 weeks ago and received $6k off in dealer discount, $6500 in FCA rebates and $750 in dealer coupons (which count as additional rebate). Based on the responses in this thread, my deal was probably average to slightly above average. As long as you are in a major metropolitan area, I think you can do a lot better.

I would dig deep into that “user fee” and see what it is. Doesn’t sound like taxes to me. And have them take those wheel locks out of the deal. That is pure profit for them and they are easy enough to take off the truck.

And yes, you can get the Blacked-Out Night Package on the Laramie’s as well. The Big Horns typically see the biggest manufacturer rebates/incentives, followed by the Laramie’s. That doesn’t mean you can’t get a good deal on a Laramie

I agree you can definitely do better. The Laramie does have the Night Edition as well if you want to go that route. Also, understand with the eTorque you're getting a 23-gallon fuel tank not the standard 26-gallon so if that matters to you, be sure to get a truck with a 33-gallon optional fuel tank. How much was your deposit? Was it non-refundable? Agree that the User Fee looks like BS dealer fees as I wouldn't pay it nor the $199 for wheel locks. You should be able to easily get 10% dealer discount BEFORE rebates regardless of which trim.

Coupons?.. Explain please

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Dealerships (especially volume ones) get "coupons" from the manufacturer based on sales volume. They are usually increments of $250, $500 and $1000. A dealership can use these "coupons" to add to a deal if they choose. They are "rebates" as far as the customer is concerned and that's how some people's "rebates" can be higher than others in the same area. I've had dealers use "coupons" before in deals when we were close but I wasn't budging and it was worth it to them to do so.

Looking back at my last vehicle purchase in 2018, I received two "coupons" from the dealership (JE1 and JE2 were the codes) that were worth $500 each.

Oh boy, seems like I'm not getting a good deal at all. They said that user fee is taxes and I don't see taxes anywhere else on the worksheet but who knows.

How much more off would it be before this was a decent deal? The deposit is $1,000 and i signed something that said it's non-refundable but I'm fairly certain it isn't legal in NC to keep it if I don't purchase the car.

I'm happy to walk away if I can get a better deal.

Is it something I should ask my salesman to apply for more discount?

Bought or should say leased my big horn last week. Love it! Didn't get the best deal, but it was good enough especially since I negotiated while it was still in transit and they had to do a dealer swap to get it. I had a hard time finding one with the options I wanted.

Ended up leasing at 13% below MSRP.

It is really just another way of discounting the truck.

To be fair, 80% of the dealers in my area were discounting their trucks at the same level as your dealer. Only a minority were offering aggressive discounts on their trucks.

I would ask for a complete line-item break down. Sales tax on new vehicles in NC is 3% so it's possible that "User Fee" is taxes but I've NEVER seen any dealership list taxes as anything other than "Sales Tax" on my contract and they list out the separate fees too (DMV, registration, etc.). There's no reason they can't provide you a line-item breakdown of all charges via e-mail so ask for that and we can help you out more.

As to price, 8-10% dealer discount is pretty standard around here in TX. I've seen some down around 5% and good ones around 13-15%. You're currently at 6.7% dealer discount. Can you do better? Absolutely but at the end of the day, if you're happy that's all that matters. You just need to decide if you want to go for more.

Before the pandemic hit some people said shoot for Invoice minus Dealer Holdback (3% of MSRP, not including the $1695 Destination Charge), then add all applicable rebates/incentives on top of that. I'm not sure if that possible in the current buying climate.

You can back yourself into a corner by using the corporation discount (1% below invoice), because typically, there is no room for negotiation with that (other than adding incentives/rebates). Sometimes, you can do better by not mentioning the corp discount and just negotiate off the MSRP.

That's why it's important when you're negotiating, to do it all via e-mail and ask for a price break-out by line item with rebate codes listed. Some dealers will use coupons and "hide" them in their dealer discount and others will add them to the dealer discount. The only way you'll know is to ask for a break-out of all costs to include the codes for the rebates.

Dealers like you to believe that the "state doc fee" is mandated by the state. This is plain false. It isn't mandated that they charge this ... it is LIMITED by mandate as to how high it can be. It is usually non-negotiable, but please understand that this is not a state fee. This money goes all to the dealer and is meant to protect their profit in this era of highly educated buyers negotiation down the MSRP.

You're right about the "limit". TX limits it to $150 but I have negotiated that out so although dealer's may tell you it's non-negotiable, it really is like most things. My last two purchases, they removed the doc fees...you just can't count on it. Just don't mention you don't want to pay it when you start negotiating....get to your number and then use that to finalize the deal. No dealer will lose a sale in TX over $150. Now the NE with some of their $899 doc fees...wow.

I think you might be going off of what I put as the prefered purchase plan or PP of $51,815. That the starting point with the corp discount of 1% below dealer invoice.
I think I'm around 13%. 40,796 +7,500 trade-in = the total price of 48,296 after taxes and fees and whatnot.

Does that seem better or am I still getting hosed?

Thanks for all your help!
