Front end clunk while turning - FIXED - TSB # 23-047-18

Since fix? What did they do?

Found loose bolt on front left sway bar. Tightened. First trip they could t hear it so I took them through a quiet neighborhood with **** roads so they could hear it and narrow it down

Since we are talking cab to frame bolts and noises. On my 13’ 1500 from pretty much day 1or so I had a weird articulation pop noise only on the left side, I put chassis ears and drove it forever trying find the noise, I had the left axle changed thinking it clanked, seemed odd and it didn’t fix anything. I tightened everything and still had the noise. I did check the cab bolts like the ones posted previously they were tight.

I was pretty upset and couldn’t find the cause, then I loosened the far left front bolt closest to the bumper and retightened it, I noticed it went tighter after that. Long story short is they use thread lock on the bolt and it was tight if you checked it, even with a 1/2”air impact it appeared tight but the bolt clamping force wasn’t there because the thread lock wouldn’t let the bolt tighten or it locked up before reaching the desired torque.

The noise was gone, I spent probably a month or more trying to find the noise. I then removed all cab to frame bolts one at a time and applied new blue lock tire on them and tightened them just to make sure they were good. The only one that was a problem was the left front.

I just looked under my 19’ the bolt in front doesn’t appear to be the same as I remember on my 13’ but for those who do have the Noise and have removed the bolt behind the tire and reinstalled, try loosening the left front a turn and retighten. Not the one behind the wheel, the one in front up by the radiator sides. , it appears to be a really long bolt probably 18mm head and at least 5-6” long. Generally these are really tight and you will need a long 1/2”breaker bar or impact. I would also try the same on the ones behind the wheel. A loosen and tighten is key because if they have tread lock just getting a 1/4”turn more might not fix it.

Just something to try for those trying to find it on their own, if I had the noise I would try it myself.

Red lock tight on the cab bolt I pulled out. I understand what you're saying, perhaps they are dipping the bolts and not installing and torquing right away. I will check the very front left tomorrow, although I will say the noise doesn't appear to be coming from that far
Up, the noise is literally under your left foot. Right where the front cab mount is.

Alright everyone, after a long tedious 2 day process I believe my noise is gone. After talking with the stars and support team they sent me an image. It’s under the black bracket under the a-pillar body mount (one right below the front doors). Had to remove all the cab bolts lift the cab up and remove that black bracket and the mount. The attached picture is the witness marks of the body to the black bracket making contact. The “fix” is to “dish or dent” the body up some so it doesn’t make contact with the bracket. After getting it all back together and a couple test drives I didn’t hear the noise once. Where before I would hear it basically pulling out of the shop all through the lot.

I’m pretty smart but I don’t know how to adequately explain the issue and fix tobmy service dpt. I’m trying to understand the picture. And what was hitting it? I can’t imagine my SD doing this for me, and they’ve been great, off of me trying to tell them what to do.

I do not believe it is readily available to star center even lol. Our zone tech rep called me and talked to me after he talked with another district rep from my understanding.

Thanks for the info so does that mean the body has to be dented or bent in the place of contact to remove the issue? And is there a certain degree to the dent or dish? Sounds like it’s still a ways away from a published fixed.

Correct body must be dented in that spot to remove the contact. To be honest I don’t think there’s a certain degree just as needed. And it’s difficult to explain through text. The picture is of the body where the mount and bracket make contact. Fingers crossed I don’t hear it on my drive home.

Exactly. Even if this is the fix, they're gonna look at us and laugh while we try to explain all of this.

Yeah I hope this fix is reported. That’s how SB are released sometimes. A great technician finds the fix. I’ll let my SD know about the fix and hope a SB is released. Mine still is down to 1-3 clunks a day so it’s not too bad. Today has been none

Thanks, it makes me wonder how this would be fixed on the production line seeing that that is a pretty odd fix especially being as needed to the two pieces making contact you know.
