Loud Noise on Startup

Thank you, I am currently at the dealer, they tried to tell me the clunk is normal. I told them I wasn’t accepting that answer. They are installing a new starter now. The stall issue they have no idea what it is. If the starter noise continues with the new starter, and or it stalls again while driving, we will be asking for a new vehicle. I will let you know what happens.
The noise happened when I started it to leave the dealer after they put a new starter in.

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear that didn’t solve the issue. Check out my video in a prior post that has the driveshaft depicted when starting the truck. The drive shaft rotates some and then the clunk is heard. In my next video the driveshaft moves but no clunk... they replaced your starter and it’s still happening... hmm this is a hard one. I’m thankful for these forms so we can all bounce things off each other and share what works and DOESNT work which is just as important. For others reading, please share what hasn’t worked like Jim did. Hopefully we can figure this out together.

Well mine started two days ago only 1300 miles on my limited so I'm in the club now

I’m in the same boat and many other issues and the dealer keeps giving me BS excuses! I took it in within two week of ownership and they didn’t even note it in my mopar. Glad I have paper work and added myself! I’ve had nothing but problems with this truck and no one helps!

Hi TinaHill,
Thank you for letting me know. I truly apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Please send us a private message so we can further assist you with this concern.

What’s your phone number, I can’t seem to private message you.

Just got off the phone with FCA, they say there are no vehicle records of my truck ever being in the dealer for the startup noise, or the backup camera or the stalling while driving. It’s been in twice since a week after I bought it. Then I got a call from the dealer manager and told him everything I’ve dealt with on this truck. He got the service manager on speaker with me. He says that ram has a bulletin out on the startup noise and they are to check the flywheel for missing teeth, and the welds on the flywheel for cracks. Anyone else getting anywhere with their dealers on this issue? Or are they telling you that the noise is normal? I told them they can have the truck back as long as they want because I want out from it all together. Waiting for a loaner vehicle then let them figure it out but buy the truck back and I’ll go buy a truck somewhere else.

Did they give you the TSB # for the flywheel?

Here is a video of my startup this morning. It had a bit more of the crackle/popping when it was brand new - I'm at 3,700 miles now. This all sounds normal to me.

When I did my 1,000 mile oil change I used a Mopar filter that caused a ton of lifter startup noise. Promptly changed it to a Fram and it's silent now.

I have that same sound as well. I don't have the etorque though

I don't by the tsb flywheel crack/missing teeth possible issue. the op is 06/18 we are now 14 months into this and my 06/24/19 build did it once as well. no way the defective spread can be that long...or could it?

I hear that same start-up clank-click-clank noise on the new 2020 Ram Ecodiesel. It seems to be very repeatable and non-random. Maybe mechanical switches or relays.

The clicking noise you guys refer to are separate and distinctly different from the loud single "clunk" at start up that we are talking about. These are two totally different things. the clinking isn't much, if any, concern to me. The "SINGLE LOUD CLUNK" (SLC) however is.

*UPDATE* I placed my hand directly on the rear drive shaft today and had my wife start the truck after it was sitting for about 12 hours. The SINGLE LOUD CLUNK (SLC) was present and I felt a strong clunk like vibration in the drive shaft. After I attempted to rotated the drive shaft to see if the u-joints were loose, however it wall all very tight with no play at all. I was unable to determine exactly where the SLC was/is coming from during that start. I hope to continue to diagnose it myself to help guide/direct the shop when I take it in. I felt the drive shaft during a second start up after driving it around for a while. There was no SLC and no movement in the Drive Shaft.

*Does anyone know if the drive shaft is supposed to rotate a little upon starting?

It's been well documented here and on other forums, the clunk is only present if you have medium to hard pressure on the brake pedal during the starting sequence. If you remove your foot from the brake the second you press start, you will not hear the single clunk. I for one believe this is not as wide spread an issue as it should be, because everyone has different starting habits.

I'm not convinced that there is actually anything wrong at this point and most owners have better than 2 years of warranty left in case there is something discovered by Ram engineers.

The above mentioned TSB sounds like smoke being blown up someones ****, IMHO.

I respect your opinion, however the clunk is similar to a “bang.” I find metal banging probably isn’t a good thing in my opinion. Also, I have tired the light pedal application with removing foot and it is still present. Regardless it’s is straight up embarrassing. I have turned many heads in my neighborhood, kids school, work, and parking lots. I have never heard a new vehicle make this kind of noise.

Mine bangs pretty good when it does it as well. However, the let off the brake when pressing the start button has stopped it for me.

There is always the chance we are experiencing different "clunks". I only wanted to point out what the majority have reported. You may, unfortunately have a serious issue if it's that profound of a bang and isn't solved by removing brake pedal pressure during the starting sequence... you should get @RamCares to escalate your complaint.

Okay... I left off after page ten, but will go back and read later. I'm at work now. Can't read all day.
I also have a noise at cold startup. It's not just one clank. It's usually a random series of noises. More like loud clicks. To me, it sounds like the starter gear is not retracting completely, and maybe dragging on the starter ring, on the flexplate. I figure that, given enough time and left alone, it will probably "self clearance", and get quieter or, worst case, the starter will fail.
(Seems like I've also heard this noise come from other Chrysler products. Many years ago, before Diamler, even.)
