sounds like my truck, at the dealership right now
this is the noise - a lot louder if you are standing in front of the truck

Called my dealer this morning and talked to the advisor and explained the noise to him.
Asked him if he knows about this. He said yes and it is normal!
He said that at times when the engine is turned off depending on where the cam tensioner sits, the oil is drained and when you start the engine you hear the clatter until oil pressure is built up.

I have a Kawasaki C14 and it has the death rattle for few seconds until the oil pressure is built up to take slack away from the chain.
anyway - I hope this is the case.

Did they pinpoint a rootcause?
I tried 3 time this morning and it did not make the noise on start up. so far with limited testing, in my case it is not related to "cold" start. it does it during the first start of the day and when the engine is hot. it is random.
No, they don’t know what it is

It’s not a rattle, it’s a metallic grind, like the starter bendix sticking and the flywheel hitting it.

he's full of $hit...not even remotely accurate...do i know what it is? no, but i can 100% bet the farm it's not the cam tensioner... i'd say what some others are thinking and that's the starter/flywheel combo making the noise.

Let’s be clear about what noise this thread was initially referencing when it was created. It is a SINGLE LOUD CLANK/CLUNK.

I have noticed two additional types of noises after reading numerous threads, and seeing these trucks on lots. One is a “chatter” that continues for a while (multi chatter noises) sounds like ticking/clicking from the engine bay. The other is a few (5-10ish) clicking noises that come from under the truck, as if from the transmission, some have described this as relays turning on off but louder.

Again this thread was created in reference to the SINGLE LOUD CLUNK.

On my truck I had a clunk (sometimes really loud, sometimes not) and a series of clicking/ ticking noises on every start. I also had a loud metal clank 1 out of every 7-8 starts. The metal clank was VERY loud and made a sound like someone was hitting a metal railing with a hammer, it turned heads and sounded like something was going to break.

About 2 months ago I started pressing the brake pedal hard, then applying the e-brake and then shifting into park when shutting down, as well as applying light brake pedal pressure and releasing immediately when starting (as others have noted). Haven't heard the clunk, clicking or metal clank since.

I think its the torque converter getting a signal to lock up/unlock rapidly causing the driveshaft to pulse like in the previous video..... But mine never does it on remote starts.....If it were a "hard" problem, it would do it every time. I thinks its a soft problem....

I'm so glad I found this tread. My truck makes the same noise mostly on cold starts. I figured it to be something with my etorque system. I hope Ram can figure this problem out. This is my 4 Ram truck (97,03,09,19) and it's really concerning that Ram hasn't came up with a solution. I've read 16 pages of treads and not one dealer can put their finger on the problem. My buddies all drive Chevy's and they have all taken their trucks in for one thing or another and never heard them say they have been treated like all these Ram owner's.

Hi Dlr21,
We're sorry to hear that you are also experiencing this. As mentioned to your fellow forum members, if you would like to be connected with a case specialist to work with you and your dealer, please send our team a private message!

I have noticed too occasionally on cold start single Clunk. And after reading more I followed the procedure of removing foot from brake pedal as soon as start button pressed it does not Clunk. If foot left on the brake during an entire start sequence then it Clunks when cold.

So I've tried the last 4 times barely pressing the brake pedal down and had no clunk when starting. One time I pressed the brake pedal down hard not remembering the test I have been doing, and I let off before starting. I barely pressed the brake pedal then hit the start button and heard the clunk. It's discouraging to hear all these threads of trucks going to dealerships with no resolution, and getting a response from Ram on this forum about opening a case and helping me find a dealer. I can't go days without my truck. FCA needs to do some research and figure it out and recall the part.

I have tried press the brake pedal just enough to hear the break switch click. Don’t Apply pressure on the break. I’m doing iT for a month now and never heard the noise again.

Took mine into dealer Wednesday for this - they said it is normal - but could not explain to me why or why it does it only about 1 in 6 starts.

Took mine to the dealer a few weeks ago. I have a popping noise on some start ups. I also have a popping noise when decelerating at the same speed every time. When the spedometer hits 24mph, you can hear the popping sound. Every time. The mechanic rode with me and heard it, but i didn't have time to let them look into it. Have to bring it back probably next friday.

I will start using my parking break again. Did have a manual car before this so I was in a good habit... Below is the video of the clunk/clank. Let me know if this is the same sound you are hearing. This wasn’t as loud as it has been before or was yesterday but it still gives you the idea.

Yes that is it, I just purchased a 2019 ram crew cab HEMI lonestar and its doing the exact same thing, not every time, but almost always at first start of the day, and sometimes a couple of times a day after its been sitting for awhile with the engine off

Took mine in last Wednesday for the loud clunk noise on startup. Dealer said they think it’s the starter so they replaced it but the problem still exist. Now they think it’s the transmission so they are keeping my truck to have a transmission specialist look at it.

After taking my truck in for service for the infamous clunk sound and had zero positive feedback from the dealership. I have just started doing the lightly press brake pedal method and it's worked perfectly for the last 3 weeks....zero clunks. I'm loving my truck again
