Wind noise

So I've taken a couple of small steps to reduce road noise, and have some planned.

I took a piece of MLV and wrapped it in a towel and put in the hole in the carpet. This is about 12" x 8". It is effective.

Added the missing seal on the bottom of the bed / cabin area. Effective.

Swapped out the Goodyear Touring tires for Michelin Defender LTXs. Effective.

Next:

Install a large sheet of MLV (with closed cell foam adhered to both sides) behind the back seats. I intend this to completely cover the area behind the seats and wrap it around as far as possible up the sides.

Going to construct my own home brewed seals for the bed / cabin area as a test, this will completely block the road from the back cabin wall. Now, even with the factory seals in place, there is a large gap on both ends right in front of the rear tires.

If you look at interior parts drawings for the 2019 Ram, FCA has several interior pieces described as deadeners or sound shields (the exact nomenclature escapes me). All of these pieces are intended top be installed behind the rear seats. I've purchased these pieces from my dealer and am waiting for delivery. Once I get them I'm going to do more experimenting.

I’m looking forward to hearing more about your efforts. I did the box/cab seal and notice a difference. I should restrict that vent behind the seat also.

Mine has been at the dealer for two weeks now for the annoying whistle. There is a star case and ram cares case open for it. Dealer is working with FCA but they haven't found the source of the whistle yet. Got a call on Wednesday from ram cares saying they are escalating it.

It's the only issue I've had with my truck with 3500 miles on it. Other than that it has been a great truck.

I'll post an update when I get one.

I also have the whistling noise

Hi Bam2880,
We are sorry to hear you are experiencing this. Have you had the opportunity to get this concern addressed by your dealer? Feel free to send us a private message if you would like some additional assistance.

I have this EXACT noise. The weird thing on mine is I didn’t notice it for 6 months. It has to be a windy day for me to hear it though and only with cross winds. I have not taken it in as it’s lived in the shop with other issues already. Hopefully someone can get a definitive answer.

What other issues?

See my earlier reply to you
Yes rubber flap is not installed at bottom of cab on after Dec 2018 builds,I used a foam pool noodle ,between bottom of cab and box ,below air vent it made a big difference to keep road noise down.

So, I reviewed your previous posts and I saw no mention of a problem with wind noise? What "hole in the floor" are you covering up? I have a Limited with the 22 inch factory will set, so I guess Goodyear tires. I do have the bed seal, was installed at the factory (Aug 2018 build). Looking behind my seats, I see no MLV type material attached. Which, makes me wonder, if you are having wind noise issues, why. Because, other than the bed seal our trucks from the factory seem identical, I haven't noticed any issues at all with wind noise? Are you certain on the identification of the sources?

You're correct in that what I'm referring to is road noise. There is a more appropriate thread I should have posted in. I had Goodyear Touring tires on the truck from the factory. Swapped them for the Michelin Defenders LTXs. If you look below the rear seats in the center there is a gap, or hole, in the floor carpeting. This is the hole I'm referring to. (I suspect this is intended to help with air flow to the rear vents as the mat behind the seats seems to be well sealed at the top.) I purchased the MLV material and am going to use it experiment with. I did receive the OEM deadener pads from my dealer's parts department and will start working with those also, along with sealing the gaps in the bed/cab area.

All for information and learning.

Sorry, I said wind noise when you were referring to wind noise, Either way, I, luckily am not having those issues with my truck. Curious, what type of road surfaces give you problems? I drive smooth asphalt and concrete, so no issues. Maybe if I drove on rougher texture asphalt it would be an issue.

I just checked mine. I have the bed/cab seal. No wind noise so far. I have 580 miles on mine and have been over 80 plenty of times. I did always notice that the beck doors kind of "clunked" more when closing, or sounded like they were closing twice/rattling. It turns out it is the flaps opening an closing between the cab and the bed due to pressure when closing the doors. I do not hear it when closing the front doors. At first it bothered me because my F150 had solid closing on the doors and so does my wife's Chevy traverse. My front doors close solid as well. Once I realized it wasnt the doors but a secondary sound from something doing what it was designed to do, I am fine with it.

One of the guys here added weather strip around their inner door jambs for a more positive seal. I plan to do the same because, like you, the rear doors feel cheap when I close them. The sheet metal visibly pulses even when closing slowly. I know the wx strip won't change that but maybe it'll at least sound more solid.

I just crawled under my truck to see if I have a seal on the bottom of the cab and what I noticed is a vent on the back of the cab. E-torque trucks have a battery pack on the rear of the cab and I'm assuming its vented to the outside. That has to make road and wind noise

Dropped truck off at dealer yesterday. Let see if they can get it fixed and not mess up my dash. I had the service manager take pictures of everything inside and out so should at least be covered there.

Yes it is a source of noise. However there are actually two vents and they are on all 2019 Rams, in fact virtually every truck made by any manufacturer have two of these, and in other vehicles they are present too. They balance cabin pressure with ventilation and when doors are closed, etc.

Rear door closing noise has been bothering me since day 1 with the truck. I assumed it was poor door design in the rear, because the fronts sound great. What you described is exactly what I must be hearing, the vent flaps!

I had a May '18 build (which would have had the bed-cab bottom seal), and now I have a December '18 build (without the seal). I definitely notice a bit more road noise from the rear of the truck. I haven't bothered to install the seal because it's not terribly noisy (though it's louder with rain), and it's unnoticeable when I am playing music at moderate volumes (which is always, unless the wife is complaining). I also only tend to notice the noise at lower speeds (~30 MPH), probably because road noise drowns it out at higher speeds.

Does anyone have a picture of the seal on the truck?

My expensive tea kettle a.k.a. Truck has been at the dealer for 3 weeks now. The call I got yesterday said that the service manager was going to take a look at it. Don't have any confidence he will find the source of the Whistle. I've been easy going about it with them and told them to go look on this forum for ideas. We shall see what happens when it hits a month.

I miss my truck, but I just can't take that whistle, I tried to put up with it but I just can't.

Im from Holland. Also here the howling sound that looks to come from the mirrors. Also when it is Windy de passenger site looks to have a leek or the door gets a Little pult out....... Then the panoramic roof is also a issue when it is windy, almost looks like it gets lifted, also on the freeway around 90 Miles........ then im not starting about the issue with the annoing subwoofer of the HK
Dealer dont know anything...... im getting a Little desperad about my Ram:cry:

Wow, I just read every tread on this post in hopes of a solution to my wind noise issue. Can’t believe I’m trying to find a fix for the most expensive item I have ever purchased outside of homes after only 3 weeks of ownership. I had to trade in a 2016 Silverado for a shaking issue and now this!

Picked my truck up Saturday and drove it on a trip of 150 miles and no more tea kettle whistling!!!!!

They didn’t have the full report written up yet but are supposed to email it to me when done so I can share it. They said the fix was moving a piece of foam blocking behind the trim of the A-pillar on the driver side.

Now I can say I am really happy with my truck and it’s a joy to drive. That was the only issue I’ve had on my truck with about 3700 miles on it now.
:)
