Went in for second oil change with 10K miles. Getting a new transmission.

Jam,

I too was surprised at what you reported and have further explained vs what the dealer did to take care of it.
My f150 (2015) had the Ford hard downshift, I think it was 3-2, and it was all over the forum (F150). To their credit the dealer reflashed it using the tsb info I gave them.
Just don't think that Fords don't have a myriad of issues and before you buy a 5.0, make sure they have fixed the oil consumption issue thats been documented, unless you want a new short block from them later. While a majority of 2018 5.0’s dont have to get new blocks, quite a few have.
Or look at all the hassles GM owners have in their 2014-16 trucks with shaking and vibration. YT has several vids on it. Its been called the Chevy shake.
From Autoguide.com, begin quote:
“While SUV owners complain of buffeting causing headaches and dizziness, GM half-ton owners claim there is an insistent vibration in their trucks. “While driving at speeds above 45 mph, there is a vibration from the rear of the vehicle,” reads a complaint on the NHTSA database.
End of quote

Just sayin the competition has just as many if not more problems... look at the overall truck and then decide.
Oh and give your dealer props for taking good care of you. The tech must have stumbled on something and that likely saved you from a breakdown.

While I know it's not all that uncommon to bag on the competition on an automotive forum, I would especially be wary of the current Ford 5.0. Nothing wrong with an F150, but right now I'd opt for the 2.7 or 3.5, and I'm a V8 guy. Ford continues to have widespread issues with the 18 & 19 5.0's both in trucks and Mustangs. Oil consumption to the tune of 2.5 quarts in 500 miles fresh off the lot. If you do jump to the competition I think I'd steer clear of the Coyote for the time being. Not difficult to find MANY stories along these lines on multiple Ford forums.

I can speak to the GM vibe issue. I've owned a 14 Silverado and now a 17 Sierra Denali, both are as smooth as a baby's bottom. I'd trust GM powertrain over FoMoCo presently.

Wow, that is crazy, However now I see others have the same mirror problems as I do. however when I brought my truck in for two recall procedures they informed me that they did not have time to deal with my mirror and would have to make another appointment. I have had more issues with this truck than my previous 4 Ram 4 Gens. They will get it back with the broken mirror I am done with this dealer.Sorry not trying to hyjack your thread just frustrated

Hi syddog 2000,

Well I finally got my truck back. I have attached scans of all the paperwork I got back. I can't believe everything they had to replace. To be very honest the transmission problems I was experiencing before was VERY minimal. If I wasn't so anal about my truck I don't think I would have complained about the shifting. I don't believe the average driver would have noticed. I am thankful and extremely happy FCA replaced the entire transmission without just trying to patch up the issue. I wonder how many other trucks are out there like mine that are a ticking time bomb? My only advice is if you even feel a slight weirdness about your transmission please take it in to have it looked at.View attachment 26728View attachment 26729View attachment 26730View attachment 26731
So did the new transmission fix the problem? I’m having a much more serious downshift issue. Taking it back to the dealer today for the third time.

What's going on with yours?

I have only had my truck back for 2 days now. It has shifted down hard once. But it has been buttery smooth most of the time. I need to drive it more to be able to tell if anything has changed. If it starts doing the same thing again I will defiantly start the process for Texas lemon law. I have already contacted a lemon law mediator. I more than likely will have FCA buy the truck back and get into another Ram

Every ECM or TCM flash or even a new trans with existing software will go through a relearn process that will last up to a few hundred miles.

Don’t be afraid to run it through the gauntlet, it will thank you later.

I have had issues since new. I have 5500 miles on it now. I get a light thump on takeoff and sometimes coming to a stop it late shifts to one and bumps. Sometimes when I come to a full stop and let off the brake, it bumps. I have had it in 3 times now. No changes.

looks like a normal receipt, they just replaced the system, to make sure... lines, cooler, fluid, transmission, labor.... itr looks like a lot but they are protecting themselves by replacing the whole transmission system... its cheaper than getting it in a bunch of times....

I wouldn't let it worry you, I've had 2 transmissions replaced on cars under warranty. I always felt glad that the manufacturer had gone all out and opted for complete replacement and not messed about with trying loads of fixes and I never worried about the work or further problems. Just forget about it now its sorted and enjoy your Ram!

You are having exactly, 100%, the same issue I am.

I don't know that it's actually late shifting down to 1 though, as the display shows 1 by the time I stop, and if I hold the gear in 1 manually, it does it just the same.

It feels to me like the drive shaft is binding up at the slip yokes. This is normally something you encounter with significantly more miles than you 5500, and my 6800. Mine only started doing this in the last 1000~ miles or so.

I drove a rental laramie when I was off at a jobsite. Same crew cab. Trans was buttery smooth and didn't do any wierd stuff like mine.

FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO FEELS MY PAIN. I've had it in 4 times for the same complaint and dealer refuses to even look at it anymore. They state it's operating as normal. That the 2-1 shift or light "kick" as I would call it should disappear after 9 or 10k miles. Yeah. It should disappear because they'll replace the transmission after 10k miles. But the kick definitely feels like it's a loose linkage in the U joint or rear end. But it's "operating as normally indicated".

My 2014 ram did this to the point that I couldn't take it anymore. It also had the engine ticking. I traded for a 5th gen 2 days ago. Hearing this issue is happening with new tricks is very concerning

I don’t know if mine is doing the same however theres a noticeable bump when it shifts down from 8-7 or 7-6, and then (like from a stop) 1-2 up. I would describe it as feeling like driveshaft slip. Not as pronounced shudder as my Ford was, and a reflash solved that. On the trip home today from the Outer Banks (NC) I will try to determine exactly what gears and might take it in for its 1st early oil change and see what they say.

For those of you having the dreaded 'bump' after you come to a stop and let off the brakes, and also sometimes when taking off from a stop - I might have some good news.

My dealer spent two days last week looking at my truck, and had their shop foreman look at my truck. He felt it clear as day, and agreed with me that it doesn't feel right. He contacted STAR and spoke with one of their engineers, and they both concurred that it was likely the slip yoke in the rear driveshaft sticking that might be causing this - they both agreed it should move freely, whereas mine does not.

A new driveshaft is on order as of last Thursday, which should arrive this week. I will report back if this actually fixes the bump, and if I can get it out of the dealer, I will get the STAR case number as well.

F150's are notorious for the slip yoke problem. The one I just traded in for my Ram had a bad stop and start bump problem. Found all kinds of info on the web about the problem being the slip yoke. Pulled the drive shaft and re-greased the yoke and all was good for the trade in!

This is an interesting thread. Occasionally, when coming to a stop, it feels like the transmission shifts harder than normal - I thought it was just a 3-1 shift, like my Fords before it. My truck definitely does not have a hard upshift when taking off, though.

If you haven't already, enable the gear counter on the dash so you can see what gear it is in. I've got 3.92's, so the downshift happens at a pretty low speed, but still will get to first before I stop - and I get the bump even 30 seconds after I've stopped. It happens when I let off the brakes, so I'm 100% certain it's not the transmission - should have been in first for a while after being stopped for that long.
