Went in for second oil change with 10K miles. Getting a new transmission.

I went in to get my second oil change with 10K miles. I was at the dealership a few weeks ago because I was having the common harsh downshift from 2-1. They did a software update. It seemed better at first but ended up getting worse. It wasn't so bad that I thought it couldn't be driven so I waited till it was time to change my oil again to go to the dealership. When I went in for the oil change I mentioned I was still having issues to the service adviser. I left it overnight. The next morning I get a call from the service adviser letting me know I'm getting a new transmission. How crazy is that? A brand new truck with 10K miles and new transmission. I have lost all confidence in this truck. I have already been in for multiple recalls, and minor warranty fixes. The strange ticking noises on startup with the Hemi engine is not comforting either. I may be looking at a new Ford 5.0 F150 soon.

I really do hate that and I would not be pleased if it was me but why are people so shocked that a mass produced part has a failure? Be thankful the issue manifested itself early and not when you were out of warranty. They provided data to FCA and that's who decided to replace it based on their expertise so be happy they didn't throw parts at it. Did you know Ford owners are facing 10 speed transmission issues and 5.0 redesigned Coyote issues?

I will say that if I had constant issues that cause me more grief, then I would ditch the truck for my own sanity and find something else that I hoped was good.

Well I finally got my truck back. I have attached scans of all the paperwork I got back. I can't believe everything they had to replace. To be very honest the transmission problems I was experiencing before was VERY minimal. If I wasn't so anal about my truck I don't think I would have complained about the shifting. I don't believe the average driver would have noticed. I am thankful and extremely happy FCA replaced the entire transmission without just trying to patch up the issue. I wonder how many other trucks are out there like mine that are a ticking time bomb? My only advice is if you even feel a slight weirdness about your transmission please take it in to have it looked at. truck1.jpg truck2.jpg truck3.jpg truck4.jpg

Have to be honest with you, reading your service order doesn’t make it sound like a minor issue, “hard shift from 2nd to 1st gear”sounds pretty serious.

Wow, that is crazy, However now I see others have the same mirror problems as I do. however when I brought my truck in for two recall procedures they informed me that they did not have time to deal with my mirror and would have to make another appointment. I have had more issues with this truck than my previous 4 Ram 4 Gens. They will get it back with the broken mirror I am done with this dealer.Sorry not trying to hyjack your thread just frustrated

The hard shift was barely noticeable. It wasn't making any noticeable noise and I learned to drive without upsetting it which almost made me not worry about it. What I am trying to convey is that the average driver, like my wife for example would have never noticed.

Have to give props to your dealer for making that happen in short order and getting FCA approval. Several members here have struggled with getting smaller things approved because their dealer couldn’t “reproduce the issue”, etc, so the fact that they had this major work done is impressive. Not that you want to be dealing with this when you purchase a new vehicle but it’s better than getting stonewalled. Hope you can enjoy a trouble free truck now because when they are trouble free they are awesome.

Trust me I understand. The only reason I have been able to deal with this truck is because of the awesome service advisor I have. The fact that I live 4 miles from the dealership, and I have multiple vehicles. In between the recalls and other minor warranty work I have done. I really have lost confidence in this truck. My 04 Ram never had a transmission issue, and I'm at over 225K miles. I have only drained the transmission twice. Once at 100K and then again at 200K and its still shifts great.

Yeah I have no Idea how I got so lucky. I'm extremely grateful because I know how hard it is to have things approved by FCA.

Jam,

I too was surprised at what you reported and have further explained vs what the dealer did to take care of it.
My f150 (2015) had the Ford hard downshift, I think it was 3-2, and it was all over the forum (F150). To their credit the dealer reflashed it using the tsb info I gave them.
Just don't think that Fords don't have a myriad of issues and before you buy a 5.0, make sure they have fixed the oil consumption issue thats been documented, unless you want a new short block from them later. While a majority of 2018 5.0’s dont have to get new blocks, quite a few have.
Or look at all the hassles GM owners have in their 2014-16 trucks with shaking and vibration. YT has several vids on it. Its been called the Chevy shake.
From Autoguide.com, begin quote:
“While SUV owners complain of buffeting causing headaches and dizziness, GM half-ton owners claim there is an insistent vibration in their trucks. “While driving at speeds above 45 mph, there is a vibration from the rear of the vehicle,” reads a complaint on the NHTSA database.
End of quote

Just sayin the competition has just as many if not more problems... look at the overall truck and then decide.
Oh and give your dealer props for taking good care of you. The tech must have stumbled on something and that likely saved you from a breakdown.

They probably replaced everything due to contamination. Who knows what could have been flowing through that system.

You know what, I was just frustrated and pissed when I said that. The more I drive my truck the more I love it. I just hope this is the last of its issues.
Thats fair. I cant say I would be thrilled to experience that either...

If you don't mind me asking, was the 2-1 bump noticeable at all when you came to a complete stop and let off the brake? I'm having a bit of this now, and it wasn't doing it for the first 5000 miles - seems to have cropped up in the last 1000.

Well since they found a lot of metal in the trans pan, that makes it a major issue not a minor one and the warranty claim had to be approved. That's also why they had to change so much. There was probably metal fragments all through the system.

There’s an honest tech and service manager...
That's for sure. Not to get too far off topic, but, would the OP consider stating which dealership this is ? I am in Houston, and can't even get it in for an oil change in a timely manner, let alone have them look at the AC, the two recalls, and the issues I have with the paint, the front end clunk, the squealing brakes, and cabin wind noise. A good dealer should be able to do all of these however mine, just takes it in, then says he cannot replicate, doesn't see the paint issues, and flat out lied that he had the parts for the recall, then all of a sudden when it was left there, they no longer had the parts, getting tired of the runaround.

Yes mine was doing the same thing. But like I stated before it was hardly noticeable.
