Transmission falling out of Drive on downshift, blinking, displaying "shift to P" and back

@RamCares: don’t you think the time has come to address this topic seriously at FCA before serious accidents will follow due to the issue?
Trust you will come up with a proper reply.

thank you in advance
Thank you for looping us in, @Orange-devil, as we certainly understand how this is concerning. Our team is more than willing to assist via private messages and alongside dealer services. Please know that we are unfortunately unable to assist customers outside of the United States, however. We therefore recommend following up with the Customer Care team in your region by visiting https://www.fcacountryfinder.com/ram.html. Thank you,

The dealership opened a STAR case on the issue and concluded to replace the transmission control module. Unfortunately the issue occured once on the drive home from the dealership with wife as witness. Since then i got a wide angle gopro video anticipating the issue and starting filming just before it occurred. I have brought the truck back to the dealership now and emailed that video. So far, is not the gear selector knob, battery, door latch, or transmission control module. Maybe next is new transmission? Lol

I got the truck back the other day and did not experience the issue on the way home :D I spoke with the service manager a bit and learned more about the cause and (hopefully) solution. The issue could be duplicated more readily, once or twice by the manager himself, under "aggressive" braking. He noted that the RPMs would briefly fall very low prior to the event. I go back to a gopro video i have leading up to the event and see this as well. I guess the engine PCM was telling the transmission TCM to enter a neutral state or the engine would stall. Never sends a code- not smart. Cooperating with STAR specialists, they came up with 2 potential culprits: the cam phaser (i guess theres some history of mechanical wear damage in a dowel interface that could lead to poor control of valves?), or throttle body buildup needing a clean. I haven't driven without an air filter or anything but did buy truck second hand and i guess thats possible at 60k. They looked into my cam phaser and didn't see the signs of wear but replaced it for good measure. After a throttle body clean and the phaser replacement (and the rear window crack repair), in 2 days now, i haven't seen the issue again or noticed RPM drop upon aggressive braking. Im really hopeful this is the resolution as i have missed my truck with the rentals i went through.

Heres the gopro video just prior to event:

WTH?

I can empathize with you. I am puzzled at my swizzle stick on many occasions. If your door is not tightly closed( leaning on it in motion), or truck is not completely stopped( shifting on the fly) ( I wonder how you get it unstuck in the snow?), Foot does not press the brake hard enough when you attempt a gear change you will get a response from your truck that will take a few moments to figure out. From trying to get it out of park, into park ,stop the blinking P, trying to understand vehicle is running message, to who knows what. I sometimes think it is just being a wise *******!

Any update since April Kicknsnare?

I went to another dealership because the first lost my trust in the handling of the battery. They diagnosed the issue as a faulty driver door latch. I expressed a good deal of skepticism over the phone but did accept the repair as powertrain warranty would not cover that (~$500). Hopefully this resolves the issue. Dropping this here to let anyone else know of a potential resolution. Picking it up today. Fingers crossed
Did this fix it?

Update please!!!I had this issue once and I'm rapidly climbing in miles and I want to get it fixed under warranty if able. Thank you!

Bought the truck new in June of 2019. First got the error six months later. Didn't happen again for another six months. In the last year, it happens more frequently. First it was once or twice a month. Then, weekly. The last month, it occurs some days four or five times then nothing for a few days. Called the dealer. Live in L.A. Two weeks to get an appointment. Annoyed!!

Side note - I had to replace the battery two months ago. The crappy oem couldn't handle the load. So, I put in a DieHard. So, doubt the issue is the battery. I'll try the fuse/relay fix.

Tell me about it!! In the last couple of days, the transmission has started to disengage around 35 m.p.h. That's while I'm driving. And, I'm in L.A., with tons of traffic. So, it is a definite hazard. Taking it to the dealer on Thursday. Sucks!

Holy crap that scary.Ram needs to do something ASAP or they'll have a law suit on their hands. Please be careful! @RamCares any input or update on this KNOWN issue that can have potential DEADLY results?!?

I have the same problem, taken it to the dealer here in LA for it twice, once they reflashed the trans computer. That seemed to work for like 6 months, recently started doing it again and took it back, I asked them to do the same because they again couldn’t recreate the issue and it started again before I even got home but the dealer was already closed for the day…

problem only seems to happen when trans is below 100 degrees. Rolling to a stop. I feel a rough shift and it “pop” out of gear then the display to shift to P then desired gear flashes with a few audible beeps and the D is flashing above the shift knob.
My truck shifts hard normally when it’s cold, not sure if that’s related…

any ideas @RamCares???

Also @Kicknsnare do you have any updates?

@OH2LA im in LA also and have felt with two dealers so far no luck I wonder if we bring both in at the same time if they would have to take it more seriously

I neglected to check back on the forum as I hadn't experienced the issue for months, but it happened once again last week. It is linked to moderate braking and a rough downshift in the 3-2 or 2-1 range for me. For some reason, the transmission remains in a higher gear too long upon deceleration. By chance, do any of you experiencing this issue have the 3.92 gear ratio rear end? Perhaps the TCM is configured for the factory 3.21 rear end rather than the flashed for the 3.92 rear end as intended? Where is the STAR bulletin @RamCares ?

I have the 3.92 gears and it has happened to me once and it was around that same situation 3-2 or 2-1 slowing down for a red light.

Good idea. Show up at the same time and come at them from both sides! Mine pops out even when below 100 degrees.

I do have the 3.92 rear end.

I have the same issue with 3.92 2020 cold engine (outside temp low 90s but engine run for less than 10 minutes) brake at a light, engine rpm drops then error code

Had this happen to me, 3 dealerships visited no codes for that issue only for the active grille shutters, showed video to them called customer service at ram care all dead ends. The video posted says it all and ram should address this. happens to me intermittently happend yesterday on the freeway slowing down for traffic asked me to put in park. Dont know what to do now.
