thanks , that's what i was finding looking at window stickers from vin# , but wasn't sure if one of option packages upgraded suspension ? or Brakes,That is the one and only difference. 3.92 allows the truck to have 17000 GCWR while 3.21 is only 13900.
Any other discrepancy would be on added options affecting base weight.
that's what i was finding , so same truck ( Big Horn crew cab, 6'box ,5.7 hemi ,4x4 ,) with similar option package listed in window sticker , i am looking at , the gears 321vs 394 , is the only change for towing capacity increase ?The 3.21 to 3.92 gears I believe increases the towing by 2,000 lbs. Everything else to increase towing capacity is based on the wheelbase/cab configuration, trim level, and options of the truck (Curb Weight of the truck). Tradesman standard cab short bed, 5.7 hemi, 3.92 gears, 4x2 has the most towing capacity if no additional options adding weight are configured.
that's what i keep finding looking at window stickers from vin # , wasn't sure if I was overlooking something ? were they changing front or rear coil suspension ?That is the one and only difference. 3.92 allows the truck to have 17000 GCWR while 3.21 is only 13900.

The yellow door sticker with the payload rating for that exact truck, will have a larger impact on what you can 'legally' tow vs the rear gearing.
Very rarely can a 1500 handle anywhere close to the tow rating you see on their websites and commercials.
Example: My truck has an advertised tow rating of 11,900lbs (I think?) with the 3.92's. I only have a 1290lbs payload.. payload is everything you put in & on the truck. People, Fuel, Hitch weight, Tongue weight, bed cover, misc. tools, etc. With a 200lbs driver, 100lb hitch, 150 +/- lbs. of fuel, and lets say 50lbs of misc. crap in my truck, that only leaves me 790lbs of payload. On a really light estimate of only 10% tongue weight (790lbs.), that means I can only realistically a trailer that is less than 7,900lbs. I cannot put ANYTHING else in the truck.. people, luggage, etc.
**Again, this is 'legally' what a truck can tow. Not that towing more will instantly cause the earth to stop rotating**
Correct. Full fluids is already included in the base weight. Occupants and cargo are the numbers you subtract from total payload capacity.I'm pretty sure fuel (at least in the tank) is included in the payload figure on the door sticker. It assumes a full tank of gas/diesel and full DEF in the diesels.

thanks , i have a 2019 quad cab with 3.92 , looking move up to a never truck , with crew cab 6' box , but most have 321 gears , and if you look at door stickers they are mostly same , its not until you go to a tow guide site with vin# , do you see actual capacity , do i need 392s, tow my travel trailer 7000lbs on some trips .That is the one and only difference. 3.92 allows the truck to have 17000 GCWR while 3.21 is only 13900.
Any other discrepancy would be on added options affecting base weight.
yes i understand that , but past the gears , is there any difference ? springs , frame , sway bars ? or just gears , same 5.7 v8, 8 speed trans.Max towing number means nothing.
There is a whole list of rules for why the 3.92 gets more GCWR than the 3.21.
There is no marketing magic in the GCWR number.
Max towing and max payload are mutually exclusive. You can not have both.
See my original answer on this thread
Nothing more, nothing less.
This towing thing is really easy when you avoid the word MAX!
Gearing. Period.yes i understand that , but past the gears , is there any difference ? springs , frame , sway bars ? or just gears , same 5.7 v8, 8 speed trans.
Fictional masculinityyes i understand that , but past the gears , is there any difference ? springs , frame , sway bars ? or just gears , same 5.7 v8, 8 speed trans.
My reply was to all the conflicting info and opinions.yes i understand that , but past the gears , is there any difference ? springs , frame , sway bars ? or just gears , same 5.7 v8, 8 speed trans.
